I was trying to find something that would incorporate the time machine door opening sound with the original door buzzer switch. Any help is appreciated.

You can play with a solid state recorder if you can get an audio to record.

Try these sound effect files, I found them online a long while back...

I saw a little device at the electronics store a few months back.
It was about the size of a peizo buzzer but had a mini usb plug. The guy said you hook it to your computer and simply drag and drop files onto it and they will play when power is applied.

So you could load one up and wire it in through the domelight circuit. When the door opens the sound plays. The door closing noise would be trickier to actuate as you would need to place another switch somewhere that is NO when the door is open and NC when is is anywhere else.

Speaker placement would be tricky too so you could hear it. But it was only $20 so id say it is worth the risk to buy just to mess around with!

If you like to build a custom one...
Many like this on ebay

If you want it to actually play with the door opening, I would rig it up to the door light switch. You need a separate source of 12V power, but one of the door plunger wires can be tapped into (I honestly forget which one, and I don't have my DeLorean handy to check either), and that'll serve as your ground. When the door is closed, it's not connected, but when the door opens up, it grounds. I have footwell lights set up like this, and they work quite well.

Another thing to keep in mind: expect to use a voltage regulator if the device you intend on using doesn't come with one or works on a lower voltage. What these do is they take a range of voltages and essentially strip out the extra voltage to get a lower (but clean and steady) voltage. Case in point: one of the more common ones (I forget the part number) will convert around 7V to 35V all the way down to a clean and steady 5V, which is perfect for USB. Google "5V Regulator" and you'll come up with a few options. For a DeLorean (or really any auto), a good voltage regulator is a perfect way to get a clean 5V out of any circuit while the car is either sitting still OR running and driving!

Are you looking for the sound itself (like in a WAV file for example) or a gadget to play that sound wired into the car's circuitry (or both)?

I can't help you with the gadget, but for the audio piece alone, there is some pretty straight forward audio/video editing software out there that lets you record anything from your PC's sound card, i.e. on YouTube or a DVD.

If you haven't built the hardware yet, here's a brand new product from Adafruit that would be perfect for this:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/2220

Only hitch is that it has an Aux-out rather than a built-in speaker, but that may actually be a good thing if you're particular about how it sounds. Best part is that it's powered by 3 to 5.5V, so a 5V regulator would be the perfect transition between DeLorean power and the circuitry's power. :)

EDIT: Here's a cheaper one with 2 MB of flash, perfect for "sound bytes" rather than theme music:

This one (https://www.adafruit.com/products/2210) has a built in amp rather than AUX, might be spot on :)

curious as to where u would mount the speaker for this and what kind of speaker to use.

I used the 2 front speakers. Just tapped into them.

I saw your video months ago and was wondering how you did it. Are you running stock speakers? Did you run it through an amp? Wiring, etc?

It is ran through the original Craig front dash speakers.
Found the door opening sound online somewhere?
Bought a Radio Shack Recording Module and Cut the microphone off and wired in a audio jack.
So i could hook my Galaxy S3 up to it and play the sound off my phone and Record it with Recording module.
Then wired it to the door plunger of the DeLorean.
I also used a old Atari 2600 cartridge for a enclosure. Bolted it under the dash.

Hope all that makes sense?

Funny...I just returned one of those modules a month ago! I was going to use it for my home theater (when I turn on my stair lights, it plays a Darth Vader sound byte), but it wasn't going to put out enough power for the speakers, so I ended up getting a small amp from Parts Express that's triggered by a light switch and has an input via a USB stick. That radio shack sound module ran off a 9v battery. I'm assuming you just wired it inline with the car's power at 12v? It holds up okay and put out enough power to run the speakers? I'm going to replace my entire sound system, so I don't think that little unit can run the new components I'm going to be using up front. I might consider using the same small amp I bought for my home theater

http://www.parts-express.com/pyle-pcau22-mini-2x40-watt-stereo-power-amplifier-w-usb--310-2218

However, I'd have to figure out how to run it off the battery/12v signal, plus the unit will keep playing the same sound infinitely...not just a single time. I ended up having to modify a motion sensor to get the thing to work. Just too many variables to have to take into account to make this dang thing work. It's something I could figure out, but I'm so tired of projects in my house, that I'm ready to just pay for a plug and play version!

So you have the radio and the SFX hooked up to the same speaker? What did you do to protect the SFX Generator when the main radio is running?

I've got my setup bench tested, but I'm unsure of the best way to share the dash speakers between the Radio amp and the SFX amp without one causing damage to the other...

You would need a relay so only one amp can drive the speaker. Make sure your amps will not be damaged with no load. If you use a solid state relay, make sure it can handle the voltage and current.
