So I decided to take the plunge this winter and effectively double my hp an torque. Now to make everything work. I will update this thread as I go, I am shooting to have a driver by spring.

Info:
2006 5.3L LS4
UN1 Trans
Trans moved forward 3"
Originally was going to run MS3, now planning on running stock GM computer.

Picked the engine up from the wrecker, 64000kms. Notice the compact water pump.

If you don't mind me asking, what does a used LS motor go for? $-wise?

Josh
11-05-2014, 02:01 PM
Well you can pick up a iron block 4.8 for as low as 300-400 I have heard. Aluminum blocks comand a little more money. Generally, 750-1000 for a motor and wiring harness is reasonable. All these numbers apply to the more readily available motors.

The true ls motors (from corvettes, etc) command a higher premium. But then again it is a vette motor. I am refering to the LS1, LS6, LS2, LS3.

I just love how clean & compact LS engines look in the DeLorean engine bay. Was there a reason why you chose the LS4 in particular? I'm guessing the fact the engine was designed for transverse mounting means more compact accessories like the water pump? Will you have to swap out the oil pan, or modify the current one?

I noticed you've removed the exhaust manifolds. I'm guessing they won't fit due to the engine cradle? I'm looking forward to what you'll come up with for the exhaust system. I'm trying really hard not to pepper you with questions... I'm such a huge fanboy of these LS swaps.

Good luck with the heart transplant. Will be watching this thread at every update.

BTW, where did you get the adaptor plate made up from?

Haven't seen anyone do a swap like this with an Auto yet.

Thanks for the interest! There are lots of custom parts to be used, the adapter is no exception. I drew it in CAD and had it laser cut. Same goes for the motor and transmission mounts, done on the computer first and lasercut and welded together. Currently designing the flywheel.

I chose the LS4 as it had to be an Aluminum block and readily available. Displacement didnt matter. So that only left the L33 and LS4. I found the LS4 generally were lower milage than the L33 and due to the different bell housing pattern, lest desirable to most so I picked it up for a decent price. Physical benefits would be the compact water pump (4" shallower than a generic LS waterpump) and the displacement on demand. Im thinking I can hit 30mpg crusing on the highway in 4 cyl mode :)

Haven't gotten around to exhaust yet, that will be tackled next year. But clearance shouldnt be a problem. I am currently planning to use some c5 manifolds directly to some high flow mufflers and that's about it. The routing would be similar to Hervey's exhaust setup.

How come going with the GM computer?

It worked out to be much cheaper than a MS3x and with HPtuners all the same functionality (as far as I am utilising it). The tune is already very well established so its a great base.
Keeping the GM computer will allow me to retain knock sensing, displacement on demand, and drive by wire (computer has built in cruise control too!). Things that are not possible with MS (well at least not easily possible).

Yep, my car is a 5spd. 300+ crank HP would destroy an delorean auto box.

I am so happy to see another LS swap, now if we can get more here in the US, that would be great!!!

I'm stoked to see how you work everything out Josh! Hopefully we can both learn from each other!

I wasn't really planning on driving my car to DCS in 2016; however, if you're going to have your car there, then I may have to reconsider the trip, just so we can finally get 2 LS DeLoreans in the same place!! :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

Hey, i resent those asterisks haha!

The PRV was coming out this winter anyway to replace the lifters and timing chains. Things I missed the first time around. The transmission was also getting rebuilt. I figured I would put the money into a new motor instead. Not saying the PRV is bad, just saying I think the LS is better for what im going for. Put on about 20,000kms on the 3.0 this summer though!

A little update:

Welded up the second revision of the transmission mounts. I am now happy with how they are sitting, no modification to the frame or transmission necessary to make them fit.

I popped in the engine again. Installed a LS1 intake (good for some more power over the restrictive LS4 intake) and hung the alternator and pondered belt routing. I am modifying the water pump housing this week to make everything fit properly.

You drove your car to DCS right? I'd say it was definitely successful!!

I was thinking that Dave was emphasizing that your engine swap was actually successful, where others have failed. There have likely been several short lived unsuccessful engine swaps, but yours is the first short lived successful swap (but for good reason!!!).

Truthfully, I'm just bracing myself for in 18 months when you ditch the LS and swap in a new LT1 from a 2014 vette!! Maybe we can make that swap together!! Haha :wrenchin:

Yes but go with a transaxle 4 wheel drive while you are at it;) shaft can run through the frame.
And move some weight forward. Like the battery, in trunk fuel tank and transmission! Oh, and don't forget power steering! With all that weight, impossible to steer.

Or just have a corvette modified t gull wing doors and Chris N. Make you custom stainless panels for it :) half the work I think.

Silly question, but -- in theory -- if I wanted to make a full drivetrain swap from an automatic Corvette, would the GM 4L60-E transmission fit?

There is a UN-Series transaxle that was designed for AWD. The output shaft would connect to a Viscous Coupling. Renault 21 Turbo Quadra if I remember correctly.

Nothing is impossible but this is getting pretty close. The 4L60, like the T56 is just a transmission. There is no differential inside. Just an input shaft in one side and an output shaft out the other side. The Delorean transmissions are both transaxles, in that they have an input shaft that drives an output shaft that drives a differential that is built into the transmission, and 2 output shafts come out of the side of the transmission.

Really? Interesting; do you have any other information on it?? I thought I had collected about as much information on the UN1, UN5, 369, and 367 transaxles as you could. I've never seen or heard any mention of an AWD version of the gearbox. Are you sure it was part of the UN1 series? If you have any other info, I'm definitely interested.

EDIT: Did some digging and it looks like you're right; the there was a Renault UN7 gearbox produced that was built off a similar platform as the rest, but with a transfer case on the back end. Looks like they're fairly rare (rare even compared to UN1s and 369s) but man I'd love to get ahold of one to play with!!

I had to do some more research here. So apparently is is a true Transfer Case. Instead of a chain connecting to an offset output, it looks as though it's a sliding gear that engages the continuing output. From there it's a carrier support bearing for the output shaft with a yoke on the end. From there the rear differential was indeed a Viscous Coupling.

31528 31529 31527

Anything is possible of course, but the biggest concern would be the fuel tank. Stick with the PRV, but turbo charge it for power. Then motorize the transfer case. From there we'd need new spindles up front, and you could just construct the mounting for the driveshafts and differentials. But that fuel tank is your biggest concern. If you can figure out how to relocate that, you'd be in like flynn.

I really need to learn French and network some connections in. Stateside and in the UK, ANY Renault gearbox is usually clearing at least £1K+. But in France on these smaller sites, people are unloading these things for 200€. Both the UN7 as well as other UN-Series variants.

May not be a bad idea. Transaxle/transmission information is definitely valuable, but should probably have it's own thread.

Truthfully, it might be nice if there was a section for transmission resource help. Especially as more people are modifying cars or engine swapping. Josh and I could talk about our experiences moving the transmission forward, along with any other engine swaps; those that have fitted Porsche 915 transmissions could share about that, potential improvements could be discussed, as well as general information about the 369 5 speed, 367 4 speed, UN1 5 speed, UN5 5 speed, UN7 AWD 5 speed, and the Renault 4141 automatic.

Agreed. Pretty much for almost anything PRV, the DeLorean community is everyone's source. But we're kind of lacking in the transaxles areas. That mostly seems to be dominated either by the GT40 crowd, or Australians. I say we start to open up a new sub-section for transaxles to accompany these engine swaps (I'm opting for a Ford 5.0 Coyote myself). We'll have a central thread for listing the Renault, Porsche, and other transaxles along with LSD & ATB differentials. From there we can split off into sub sections dealing with both installation as it pertains to mounting and adaptor kits. Then we can have separate subsections dealing with tweaks, weak points, and improvements to the specific transaxles.

I'm all for this. It's something very relevant to me, as well as judging by this thread, lots of others.

Let's go ahead and get it started. If the mods want to guide us on a redirection to either the General DeLorean Discussion\Resources or Custom DeLoreans/Mods (whichever they think is more appropriate), we can get started on this.

Thread bump! Any news? :)

Well my fb is about as up to date as it gets!

Doing lots of little stuff.

-prepping wiring harness
-Fabbed ECU mount, belt tensioner, vss bracket and trigger wheel
-dissembled trans, cases being cleaned and powdercoated
-purchased misc engine parts - plugs, wires, waterpump, etc
- finalizing flywheel drawings - to be made next month

So lots of little stuff coming together. But nothing major enough for me to give an update! Its also very cold here so progress slows down. Just picking away a smaller stuff I can do inside.

I did get a decent deal on a t56 + ls1. I swapped around some parts to beef up the LS4, but I am going to re-sell the engine and trans (already sold) to add some funds to the project.
I decided against going with the ls1 as it was higher mileage, its history was unknown, the ls4 has warranty, and I want drive by wire and displacement on demand that the LS4 offers. id also have to make a new adapter plate to make the ls1 bolt up to the transmission. Easy enough but more money to spend

There's something very cool about a rear mounted V8. This reminds me of my Fiero project I did a few years back. I built up a 305 with a 4 barrel Quadrajet, and shoehorned it in place of a 2.5 iron duke. The weight of the engine over the drive axles made it squat and launch like a slingshot. Good memories...

I saw Nick's D at speed.... very fast.

Good luck with your project! I'll be following your progress.

So when im stuck inside I chip away at CAD. Flywheel is all designed up and at the machine shop to be made. Also designed up the starter mounting.

I also put together the wiring harness for the engine. I basically made a hybrid harness of the gm and delorean harness. I am retaining all the delorean sensors so I can feed the gauges. Also did quite a bit of re-routing to help keep the harness as much out of sight as possible. I will be dropping the engine back in in a few weeks, ill take lots of pictures when I do so as it will be a thing of beauty!

Time for an update!

Alright!!

Not much has happened. I am struggling to finish the transmission... I am still at square one with no upgraded input coupler or shaft solution.

I had the car booked in for an event though, and so I could progress forward with engine related items I dropped the engine back in with just the transmission shell. Mounts worked great.
It looks pretty nice in the engine bay, I hope to keep it as clean as in this picture, with very minimal visible wiring.

Finished up the fuel system, it is incredibly simple. Pump to corvette regulator (mounted near tank) and one line to the fuel rail. Done.
No need for this pesky guy anymore... :)

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/10996177_1028520127161500_5340710839475003057_n.jp g (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/10996177_1028520127161500_5340710839475003057_n.jp g.html)

Trailered the car up to the show and got it all polished up. It cleaned up very well and was a huge hit!

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/11159987_10206823742051638_2196225508984305911_n.j pg (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/11159987_10206823742051638_2196225508984305911_n.j pg.html)

Back in the garage I ripped it back apart. Got the plumbing for the intake done. I will be running a MAF sensor mounted in the pontoon. As you can see I did quite a bit of cutting to the pontoon, as well as the rear panel. However, when the bumper is installed the intake is completely hidden and the bumper foam is retained.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11126722_1043372149009631_2658615075756064535_n.jp g (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11126722_1043372149009631_2658615075756064535_n.jp g.html)

The belt routing has been a bit of a challenge with the LS4 Water pump. I ended up designing a tensioner to make it all work. I will be revisiting the belt routing when I work in A/C. Currently the car has no A/C compressor, lines, condenser, etc. So I did not feel obligated to work in a compressor at this time.

I had a hard time finding headers that fit due to the placement of my engine mounts. So I decided to make my own. This was a bit of a learning experience but I took my time and it turned out well. I am sending them out to get tig welded by a pro.

How did you eliminate the accumulator?

How did you eliminate the accumulator?

smartass answer: with a wrench, some pliers and alot of cursing...

proper answer: If you are not running k-jet you do not need an accumulator. I wont hurt to have it but it is not necessary at all. I also ran new fuel lines so the delorean hard lines are now de-comissioned.

Thank you sir!

Design and cad is a big portion of what I do for a living so I am lucky to have those skills and access to a lasercutter that way.

I was interested about the modifications on the original fuel lines (i.e. the removal in the T on the return line)

I was interested about the modifications on the original fuel lines (i.e. the removal in the T on the return line)

I was originally going to do this but i figured it was not worth the effort. The fittings sometimes get seized on the lines, you could strip out a flare nut, and it is really cramped to work in there. So I just got a flexible stainless line and ran it along side the heater hoses.

Well, here is a fairly major update, the car is getting close...

Got my flywheel made up by a good friend going to school for machining. He had access to some VERY nice equipment and it came out great.

FINALLY got my hands on the part I needed - toby's upgraded coupler. This one came with a transmission attached...

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/549446_1062980383715474_3814374059884847085_n.jpg (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/549446_1062980383715474_3814374059884847085_n.jpg. html)

Started on the chassis side of the wiring. Got the ECU mounted and went to work.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11143076_1068847736462072_5401387983807260927_n.jp g (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11143076_1068847736462072_5401387983807260927_n.jp g.html)

Afterwards, I got the engine all together. Flywheel bolted up nice, clutch and pressure plate bolted up perfect. Also fabricated up a custom starter mount, which goes off the adapter plate.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11059918_1074383019241877_8960315865358753634_n.jp g (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/Facebook/Project%2082%20Delorean/11059918_1074383019241877_8960315865358753634_n.jp g.html)

Finally got the transmission mated up to the engine. After all the hard work and planning, it bolted up just as it should.

As of today, the engine and transmission are in the car, all the wiring is done, intake and exhaust are on, coolant system is installed... Finally time to start it up!

It fired right up which was a surprise. Didnt run it for too long as there was no coolant in the system. But it fired up very quick (engine has been sitting for several years) and idled rock solid.

Now to get coolant in, install the shift linkages, and finally the axles... then hit the road! Very excited.

Haha, thats a good one. Ill make sure to pass that on to the welder, he would appreciate the compliment. It was one of the only jobs I had hired out that came back so much above and beyond my expectations I was just speechless.

Btw, next video do you mind shooting it horizontal vs. vertical so we can see more of what's going on? (plus, being a film guy, vertical videos make me cringe every time i see one).

Honestly, at some point it might be nice to have an engine swap section so that those that have done an engine swap can help those interested or considering an engine swap. Especially since there are so many different swaps surfacing. Plus we could exchange ideas for upgrades, advantages of different engines, document reference material, etc.

So I just realized I never gave a comprehensive conclusion to this thread.

Following the first start there were many loose ends to tie up, mostly relating to the exhaust and coolant system. But I got it to the point I was confient enough to do a first drive on a wet sunday night. Everything went well and it was a completely different car. Notice how i mentioned it was a wet night... keeping the rear end under control was a bit of a chore... but fun. It is in any weather!

I don't know about that amount of angularity being to detrimental in that installation. But I owned an 82 Subaru wagon which had adjustable height suspension. I thought it would cool at the time to set the ride height to the maximum. Doing this created a rather steep angle for front axles coupled with the fact they were steering axles. I had joint failure (Lock up) to the OEM axles after about 6 months. I had those replaced and 11 months later had them fail again. Fortunately those got replaced under warranty. I attributed the premature failure to the excessive angle they were running at.

In the case of the delorean, it probably is less of an issue since it's not a steering axle but could contribute to a shorter life span over the long run and lots of miles.

Wondering if you could post a picture or two of the trans nose cone area from below, Ive been curious how tight it is against the frame after being moved. Plus how did you route the cross gate cable? its tight enough in the stock position.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/jschatte/20150815_134529.jpg (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/jschatte/media/20150815_134529.jpg.html)

I had to notch out the frame to get the cable to sit properly. I also did this at about 3am, when i was doing the final install so my judgement was clouded and I cut the hole a little too long. But it works. Definitely cramped, however I can still adjust everything with regular tools.

The CVs are designed for up to ~25 deg, and this setup is closer to 10deg. It looks a lot worse than it actually is. As Dennis mentioned they are well within their operating range. The weakest point is the boot itself, these are much longer and more flexible, getting that much angle out of a stock CV axles you would be ripping up the boots constantly even though the actual CV itself can handle it.

Josh - as a newby here, having been away from DeLoreans for the last 11 years, I am very impressed by what you and others like Nicholas are accomplishing with LS transplants. I started fooling with these cars in 1986, and in 1990 was one of the pioneers of engine transplants with the construction of BLWNAWY. I used a Chevy 4.3 V6 for several reasons - did not have to modify the frame, move the trans, or anything like that. I used a stock Chevy flywheel, simple re-drilled to accept a DeLorean clutch, a custom non-cad-designed adapter plate, and a standard replacement high-torque mini starter. Mostly I used the 4.3 because the LS hadn't been built yet! Having owned an LS-powered C5 Vette for the last 14 years I am a huge fan of their power and economy. If I was doing a transplant today I would follow your lead for sure.

Now that BLWNAWY is back in my stable it is tempting to upgrade it to LS power, but I think I will rebuild it to its former glory. Check back to the "Resurrection" (or "Ressurection" as I stupidly spelled it) under General stuff if you are interested. Again, well done, guys.

Thanks for the kind words sir! Nick really got the ball rolling in terms of LS swaps, I think there are now 6 or 7 completed or in progress swaps across the world.

I can certainly see merit to swapping in a 4.3 based on size constraints. The new variant of the 4.3 (LV3) is putting out numbers similar to a 5.3L LS engine. Sounds pretty good to me!

Another crazy idea would be a turbocharged 2.0L ecotec (LNF), or even crazier a VW TDI.
But nothing beats the V8 power and sound!

Better late than never, the modifications to my car from this last season. Expect more updates in the future, as I have the need to pull my engine annually for some reason... LOL.

My clutch was slipping BAD so I pulled the engine to investigate.
Turns out the stock valeo setup isnt meant to hold 300+ crank hp. Rookie mistake on my part.

The fix to this problem was to upgrade to a Nissan 350z pressure plate with a delorean kevlar faced clutch. This has been pioneered by eddie and his VR6 swaps, I cannot take credit for this idea!

The clutch fork was also modified to allow the slave to be removed with the engine in place, no modifications needed to the length of the slave, and give me some more clearance.

The 350z release bearing was integrated with the delorean one with a machined and welded fixture.

Everything put together. The flywheel was re drilled and refaced to accommodate the Nissan pressure plate. It is much larger in diameter than the delorean one, only 2mm to spare in diameter on the flywheel.

Eliminated the crossgate cable and made a rigid rod in its place. Shifts require less effort than before, and are more precise. You can only do so much with a UN1, it is a hard shifting transmission by nature I have found.

Almost all together. Now with AC! I used the gm AC compressor.

The new clutch setup works great over the 15,000kms I put on it this summer. Very nice to have AC finally as well. Up next will be swapping out the transmission with something with 6 speeds and better ratios. Stay tuned!

Yes, Josh, I can vouch for Eddie's clutch design. It's worked flawlessly for me so far.

So you replaced the crossgate cable with a rigid rod.... Interesting. If there's anything I desire, that would be a more precise shifting. Are there any drawings, or a BOM to share for the rigid rod?

Thanks for the compliments guys!

As for the shift rods, no drawings on them. I will be moving on to a different shift mechanism due to changing transmissions in 2017, so If you are interested these parts will be up for grabs.

Extra nice work. I am putting the body back on mine. Taking care of every little thing I find in the process like a bug in my cluster, steering column bushing, new clutch master, DBW C5 pedal. Most of the the wiring have been cut in both door by PO and the interior is in pieces. The exhaust have been mock up and I'm putting back the body to get the exact positioning of the mufflers so everything align real nice. Looking forward for the west meets the east for a Canadian beer.:hihi:

I am/we are currently only aware of three LS engine swaps (http://www.citizenkidd.com/dmc/pages/vinview_totals_spec.asp?vinstart=20), but this is the very sort of thing I like to keep track of. So if you have the VINs of the others, I'd be much obliged to know about them....

Josh,

As you sure the UN 1 will handle the torque? The UN1 is essentially a ZF3HP16HL, these internals won't handle the torque from a LS.

I approached the same torque limitations with my Rover V8 upgrade and decided to go with a ZF4HP22E which can handle torque and HP. It fits the D frame with some custom brackets.

I dont really see how you can make a statement like that, Nick and I have successfully ran the UN1 in our swaps for many miles. Nick is much more knowledgeable about this transmission than I, I would like to see this discussion.

What transmission are you looking to upgrade to?

I have the transmission sitting in the corner of my garage right now. It is a 6sp out of a 2011 Subaru Legacy.
There are three versions of this transmission, Non turbo, Turbo, and Diesel. I picked up the Diesel variant as the gear ratios are much closer to what I am shooting for. Cruising at 70mph I will be turning <2000rpm rather than >2600rpm which will get me to my 30mpg goal. The gears are wider than the UN1 (can handle 300ft-lbs easily) and upgraded gear sets are available. It is a much smoother shifting transmission, and it has an integrated speed sensor for my ecu. The physical size is the same as the UN1 so no frame modifications will be necessary. I think it will tie things together nicely and really transform the car. The diff will need to be flipped and the PTO blocked off but a company out of Australia (Subarugears) makes these parts so it is very straight forward. It is not the strongest transmission out there, a Porsche G50 would be awesome, but it is affordable and gives more headroom than the UN1 as well as some nice additions.

The starting point will be pulling my UN1 so I can model up a flywheel, adapter plate, mounts, and shift linkages.

Actually, according to my notes, that Subaru trans will be about 6" shorter than the Renault/DMC trans after you remove the PTO stuff (and not counting the shift linkage components). :rock_on:

This is true for the 5 speed. Not the 6 speed, as it has another gear hanging off the ass end!
The 6 speed is cable shift so it has a different shifter setup that does not protrude out the back. It is similar to the delorean setup, one lever for front to back, one lever for side to side.
I can give you some dimensions if you want.

Im assuming you will post pictures because I am very interested in this. Im interested in the eventual LS swap, but I plan on doing everything else first so I've been curious about a transmission swap. I have seen a 6 speed UN1 mentioned on the Delorean.co.uk site and was thinking whatever upgraded transmission he had would be the only viable option. I remember nick mentioning that the LS is slightly longer than the PRV and that the UN1 had to be moved. I think he also said that most Porsche transmissions would be longer than the UN1.

I would imagine Josh was probably hoping to share this; I know I would have. Just some food for thought.

Regardless, very well done Josh! I'm not concerned too much with the HP, as much as that torque curve! It's pretty damn hard to beat having 300+ Ftlbs of torque a low RPM like that. That's where the fun of driving these cars come in. Well done!! :burnout:

I have my suspicions that the dyno is reading a bit high, but I can't really confirm or deny that so I will just be extremely happy with the numbers!
That certainly is the beauty of a cam in block V8. I really enjoy how it hits the start of the graph at 200ft-lbs...

Updating the thread these were the upgrades for 2017. A 6sp subaru transmission, works great. The UN1 served me well, I pulled it and sold it to another member. The subaru can handle a bit more power, the gearing is better for a v8, and it shifts much nicer than the UN1. The gearbox was converted to 2wd and reversed with parts from Subarugears, great guys to deal with.

Just curious why you went with a steel spacer plate vs aluminum? Did you make a new flywheel? I do find pretty amazing that with the spacer it, it looks like the axles end up in the same fore/aft location as the OE transmission.

I make my adapters out of steel as the shop I deal with cannot cut thicker than 3/8" aluminum plate. The adapter plates are 1/2" for the UN1 and 3/4" for the Subaru. Steel is also cheaper than aluminum and the threads are less likely to pull out, especially if the bolts are installed and removed a few times.

I made a new flywheel utilizing the stock subaru ring gear. The flywheel is basically a hybrid of a subaru and a ls flywheel. All clutch components are subaru.

The axles have some angle to them, but nothing to be concerned about. They sit similarly to the automatic transaxle, if not better.
