My Betamax still works, as does my Laserdisc, using them both to copy over certain rare items onto recordable DVD format for the foreseeable future...

I just picked up one at a Thrift Store for $10. It worked perfect the first time and then the video went out the next time so I have to send it in for repair.

It looks really nice. According to my research, it was made in 1986. It's also a Sony.

I know there's someone else on this forum that has more than one betamax. We'll see if he chimes in or not.

We had one up until the 1990's, but my brother stuck a sandwich in it and now it resides in memory and history.. I would like to have another some day. On the topic of obsolete technology, I once had a kid come up to me and tell me my walkman was the largest MP3 player he had ever seen.. :screwy:

I have a beta player but no tapes.

Anyone that wants to send me some tapes to test it out, PM me!

I also have the BTTF laserdiscs, but no player. I'd be interested in buying a decent player.

buddy-

i am a hardcore LaserDisc collector... depending on how much you want to spend and what features you want, i can give you some suggestions on what model of LD player to look for.

I got one l4z0r disk... Mad Max... The widescreen edition. No player, I would LOVE to watch it though... Mad Max fan here...

The wife works at Half Price Books, and she finds some cool stuff now and again. She called me, and since it was a couple of bucks (with her discount) I said BUY IT!

Nullset & Justice - if you really do want a working Laserdisc player I'll be putting mine up onto E-bay some time after the new year. It's in great condition and also plays normal DVDs too. I already sold my BTTF Trilogy Laserdiscs (to mike, right here on this forum - thanks Mike!) but I have another 25 or so from my ever shrinking collection up on E-bay right now with like another 3 days or so to go, and some REALLY good prices on some REALLY nice titles, including two of my favorite & rarest films, and even a Monty Python film with the cover artwork personally autographed by the director. If you love Laserdiscs, go see what I've got here:

I still have my Beta and proud of it!
Better video, better sound, smaller tapes. What sane person wouldn't have bought one in the early eighties? I remember taping a random pink panther cartoon with the soundtrack from a casette tape I was playing, Van Halen's "why can't this be love?". Like the Wizard of Oz and Dark side of the moon, wouldn't you know that the music and the video were choreographed perfectly! Creepy. Don't tell the wife about the 80's porn either!:bigclap:

As an aside, the computer I was using at the time was waaay ahead of its time too; an IBM PC Junior with the added Racore unit that boosted me up to something insane like 256K of memory! This thing had a wireless chiclet keyboard and had RGB output so that I could use my Mitsubishi TV as my monitor. Crazy for the time.
Maybe that's how I was able to get all the chics without yet owning a Delorean? :rock_on:

If we are talking retro 80s video players, the guy I shared a house with at college had one of these:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/Vr2020.jpg

a Philips VR2020, a Video-2000 system, the main selling feature being that the tapes could be flipped over (a la music cassettes) and the other side played.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_2000

a minority player, and therefore by definition, the technically best one :)

How did I miss this the first time around?

I have:
1 Betamax w/ stereo
1 CED player
3 Laserdisc players
5 VHS, ranging from utter crap to studio grade
MiniDV, Digital 8, DVD, Bluray. Sold my last HDDVD player, now I need another one :D

I'd like a Video 2000 unit but I don't think they were made for NTSC markets. That and a Cartivision.

Did/does anyone own a D-VHS (D-Theater) player?

When certain titles weren't available on Bluray or HDDVD, rips of these would show up on the internet since they were technically in HD and contained a 5.1 audio track (sometimes DTS).

It is basically a digital VHS that was capable of 1080i and 5.1 surround sound back in 2002.

This is the player I have:

Pioneer CLD-S104
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-s104/pioneer_cld-s104.jpg
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-s104/pioneer_cld-s104.htm

It's a good basic player and produced in the mid 90's. I got it on eBay for $50 including double boxed shipping (a good idea). It was in like new condition and even came with the original box. You should just avoid players from the 80's as they are even older and don't produce as nice a picture.
