Ok guys-
So, I'm pretty sure I am going to completely go through the fuel system this winter, but wanted to start conducting some tests before ordering parts ...
In the past I have battled a high idle (1500 rpm), and a rich mixture. Until recently for some reason the car would never stay running upon cold start for the first time. After a couple of tests I cracked it up to a poor rest pressure issue and decided I would replace the fuel accumulator when I had the rest of the fuel system apart this winter.
Since then I had installed a DMC generation 1 stage 1 exhaust system and replaced the O2 sensor. After some exploratory troubleshooting I discovered the idle micro switch was not plugged in for some reason. After plugging it in the car's idle after start would settle around the 750-850 rpm area. I was pretty happy. However, the car was still running richh. Next I planned to mess with the fuel/air mixture (after purchasing a Acon dwell meter) until I came to the conclusion that when the PO drilled out the mixture control plate to get at the Allen screw, they drilled into the screw making it impossible to adjust. I was able to find a used upper control unit with a good Allen screw but have yet to put it in. ( thought I would install it this winter ).
So recently I pulled the injectors to conduct a spray pattern test. A couple injectors were spraying great! A couple not so much. The were spraying but shooting to the side. When comparing fuel volumes after the test, they all seemed to spray a pretty comparable amount of fuel. So, ok. I'll send my injectors in to Hervy for cleaning, no biggie. After re-installing the injectors I now have a weird issue. When I start the car it actually stays running but has a horrible idle bobbling around 500 rpm and wants to die unless I keep my foot on the accelerator. Once it warms up a bit it's almost like something comes un-stuck and it will hold an idle at 1k-1100k, and actually stays running. If I start the car under this condition and take it for a drive it will drive but it clearly has less power. I noticed one time while slowly accelerating in second gear that the "something" un-stuck and the car lurched forward with power and immediately settled at a stop with the 1000-1100k rpm. After that at happens the car has power again. If I didn't know any better, I would almost think that the plunger in the fuel distributer is sticking. Any thoughts? The only thing I did to earn these new symptoms were to pull the injectors, clean the outside of them, conduct the spray/volume test and put them back in. I did notice that when I pulled the injectors that the injector ports in the motor look really dirty inside. Is that normal? Is there anyway to clean that gunk out? What gives? Any thoughts?
At this point, I'm thinking about replacing the entire fuel system this winter, but really want to make sure I don't have other major engine issues before hand. Are there other things I should be checking?
As always, thank you all for your opinions and help.
