I hope to one day own the following:

#3. 1975 Monte Carlo.

I won't number these as they aren't in any particular order:

DeLorean DMC-12 (Got it, check Doc :))
80's-ish Lotus Espirit Turbo (although I'm not 100% certain my 6-3 frame will fit in it)
Aston Martin DB7 or Vanquish sorta super car
Lamborghini Countach
And for something a little more realistic, I'd like an Audi Quattro A4 someday. I've had a C-class Merc and a 3-series Bimmer, but I've always thought I should give the Audi a chance.

Exactly! I can get a car that cost $100k new now for like $8-12k. There's one I have my eye on with only 58k miles, it's in new condition, and they're asking like $9k for it. There's another one here in the state with 26k miles and they're asking $12k. Unfortunately the 26k mile one is a nasty green color... I want a red one with tan interior.

Exactly! I think it's because the early ones are all 20 years old now, and the rest are quickly approaching that. This means they're at the bottom of the automotive depreciation curve. It was the same way with DeLoreans 10 years ago when I bought my first one. I paid $11k for a car that had twice that in receipts for work done to it. It's when cars start to creep towards 30 years old that they start to be viewed more as classic automobiles, and the nicer examples start making some gains in values. That's why I want to scoop up a super nice SL right now while they're dirt cheap.

Guilty as charged with derailing this thread towards 500SL's! Split thread maybe?

Louie, so my next question is (cause I believe you with the 20 year low 30 year high price idea): what does one need to know about these cars prior to taking the plunge? I have a million and one things I would have loved to have known about my DMC prior to getting it, so I figure there might be some things to watch out for with a 500 SL.

The biggest problem with this sort of car (i.e. any 15+year old particularly German but in general low production car) is that, although the car only costs $10K now, the car is full of parts typical of a $100K car of the day. Electronics that were leading edge in the day, etc. So - maintenance can be a nightmare, especially if you start getting into ECU issues as the cars are new enough to have complex computers in them, and old enough that things have started to deteriorate, parts are getting hard to come by, and dealers don't want to work on them any more. In the right hands they can be a great deal, but a lot can go expensively wrong.

As with any older car - documented service history is everything. Buy from the prior owner. The longer they have been the owner the better. The scary ones are on the used car lots with no traceable history.

I've been reading this forum the past couple of years:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/

Basically a big thing to look out for is the top hydraulics. The cars had one of the first fully automatic convertible tops (meaning there are no latches- you just push a button and the top either stows or raises). So there are a lot of hydraulic cylinders which require replacement, and that can add up. They start leaking around the windshield header & if go unchecked, can ruin the interior with hydraulic fluid. The top controller apparently is a very expensive part if it hasn't been replaced ($1k).

Other than that, the '93-95 SL's had wiring harnesses which would biodegrade. Many have been replaced by now, some have not. Apparently the way to check the harness is to take off the plastic cover over the engine & check the wires at the fuel injectors.

The inline 6 cylinder cars (300SL & SL320) need head gaskets every ~60k miles. Apparently it's not a terribly labor intensive job though due to the design of the engines. The 5.0 V8 in the 500SL & SL500 (1990-1998 ) is apparently bulletproof and maintenance free.

Oh, and everyone seems to agree the SL600s are trash & to stay away from them.

Much like DeLoreans, you're highly encouraged against buying a car without maintenance records. The car's owner's manual should be stamped by the dealer every time it went in for service, and you're highly advised against buying a car without the owners manual completed.

All of this is very true. The very early r129 SL's ('90-'92) are far simpler than the later ones, which is one of the reasons why I'm focusing on getting one of those. I also just think they're cleaner & less cluttered looking cosmetically. One good thing about the cars not being orphans like the DeLorean is the fact Mercedes Benz continues to makes parts for every car they've ever made (albeit at a price).

My Wife inherited a 72 powder blue Pantera with 54k miles on it. Her dad had it since new and was a commercial fisherman that was only home a few months out of the year. The thing was awesome but there was just no room in it. You have to be like 5' 8" and under to drive it. We sold it a few years ago.

That's good advice Dave. Probably the single biggest thing I wish I would have heard when I bought my D. My car is rock solid now, albeit there'll always be a to-do list and lots of cosmetic stuff. To give you a (scary) idea, I recently made one extra formula in the almighty master DeLorean spreadsheet I have: total dollars spent divided by number of miles driven since purchase. And I'm north of 13 bucks per mile. The number goes down every drive I take, but year one was painful.

Hey Louie, ya know after what you said about the 20/30 year part, I looked another car up that always caught my eye but would likely fall under Dave's advice: an early 90's BMW 8-series. You can buy a 12 cylinder 850Ci for about 10-12k. Just don't have a heart attack when stuff starts to break.

I just want a Delorean, heck I would love just once to sit in a BTTF Delorean, I have sat in a Delorean with so much pressure due to the owners that only let me sit on the edge of the seat and don't touch the doors or anything which is sad because my whole life is Deloreans and I have a huge amount of respect for the Automobile, but.. it's okay at least I got to kinda sit on one, but my dream is to sit in a BTTF modified Delorean and close the door even for a few seconds. but I wish I could own one someday but I never will..I don't have that kind of luck..
