So, aside from the Deloreans, what do you do?

A few years back I was heavily into 3d modeling.

I still tinker every now and then.

I've got a 66 Nova I've been restoring for over 5 years now that I really need to get back to.

I took a few months from the Nova to fix some damage the PO did to my Mustang before I bought it. Take it from me, the Delorean rust issues are cake compared to Detroit steel.

This might be a future project: I want a ground pounding 390 powered Mustang drag car. Trust me...she's worse than she looks and she looks bad.

Ive got a Lancia Zagato that is going through the resto process. If i had the room, i would attempt it myself, but ive got a backyard guy doing all the rust work. :(

But i do collect 1:18 scale model cars (any other scales if the diecast is awesome). Got around 100 1:18s, a few 1:24s, boxes of 1:64s and a small sellection of 1:43s. Will stop collecting these diecasts after my huge 1:1 purchase of a Delorean!

I do spend a bit playing online with my PS3, COD Black Ops atm. If anyone wants to add me, its "Simid".

Love to get into 3D modelling, havent used my Industrial Design degree for many years now. :(

i have way too many hobbies and way too little time, now that i am a homeowner. however, aside from my '58 Buick project i like to collect things.

LaserDiscs & archaic video players
vintage stuff; appliances, clothing, records, whatever
vacuums
photography and collect vintage cameras
old money
and, of course, DeLorean trinkets & memorabilia.

i also like DIY projects and fixing things. im sure there are more that i cant think of right now... i plan on selling alot of my stuff to add to my DeLorean fund, which is, as you can see, sadly lacking at this point. i dont have time for all those hobbies anymore anyway, and ive been waiting for a D for a long time.

I collect cars and they're my primary hobby. Currently, I'm working on a 1970 Cadillac convertible and a 1974 D0dge Monaco Blues Brothers clone.

Otherr than that, the list of things that I collect would be far too long to post here.

Outside of cars, I fish. Love to spend an early morning on a dock in the everglades. Hoping to get a boat in the near future.

I also shoot, and am starting to collect guns. Im moving up from handguns to rifles. On my "buy me now" list are a SASS

and, for Zombie purposes,

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/images/barrett_82A1.jpg

a Barrett 82A1, perfect for home defense, beer cans, buicks, etc...

Also a nature person. Gimme something fun to do outdoors, and im there. Mountain biking, hiking, etc... all good to me.

Other projects and hobbies, let's see:

1985 Toyota pickup that I've been working on for 6 years to look like Marty's truck
1977 Mercedes Benz that needs some fixing
1927 house that I live in (im always fixing/upgrading/remodeling something in here)
An Ironman costume for Halloween
Replica Movie props
2 Deloreans

and the obligatory wife and kids....way too much stuff, not enough time as mentioned before.

I'm a web/software developer by day, it's always been a passion so I also end up doing it at home too for personal projects or freelance clients. I'm getting more into mechanics and electronics now, so I'm trying some Arduino projects and learning a lot about automotive technology (since I have a DeLorean and all now).

I own 4.5 properties, boat, fish, and have a 20 month old. No time for anything these days outside of the properties and the baby. With some luck the boat will see the water again next summer and the baby will enjoy it some.

I figure when I have enough for my Delorean I'll be able to drop the baby off at school on her first day! If the absolute right "D" comes along I can pull the trigger now, but I'd rather hold on/off for a bit.

for being nearly 90 years old, our house is in nice shape. they really dont make them like the used to; we have beautiful solid oak everywhere.

what eats up my time is just a myriad of small things. im a bit obsessive, and when i do a project i always go out of my way to do the best job possible so i dont have to redo it later. sure, i could do it the 'easy way,' but it would bug me every time i thought about it, and i figure i save time in the long run by taking the time to do it well the first time instead of having to do it multiple times.

it doesnt help that i seem to have ADD and am easily distracted... :wiggle:

...way too much stuff, not enough time as mentioned before

I've read some stuff recently about living in the moment and enjoying the moment. Also how that relates to stress about worrying about what might come in the future versus just enjoying today.

I hear a lot about when friends don't have time to do stuff because of their job, or their kids, or money, or whatever. But when are you going to have time? Life is too short to not be doing what you enjoy or what makes you happy. I'm not saying to mortgage the farm to afford a DeLorean or whatever, but if you don't have time to do the stuff you enjoy, then why are you spending your time on things you don't want to be doing?

I had the good fortune of meeting a motivational type speaker/trainer when I was with GE. His name was John G. Miller. You can look his stuff up on his QBQ (Question Behind the Question) mindset but the skinny of it is that it's all about personal accountability and what are YOU going to do to make things better?

He sends out some emails to those subscribed and I got one this week that is along these lines. I'll share it here:

The Power of Perspective

by John G. Miller
The QBQ! Guy <http://qbq.com/John-Miller-video.php>
Twitter: QBQGUY <http://twitter.com/QBQGuy>
Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/theqbq>
LinkedIN <http://www.linkedin.com/in/johnmillerqbq>

I don't know about you, but from what I hear and read, people don't seem very happy nowadays. The economy is struggling, lots of folks are out of work, the stock market is dropping, and consumer confidence is in the tank. A brand new poll shows that 89% of Americans are unsatisfied with the way things are going in the United States. Meanwhile, our political "leaders" can only seem to point fingers at the media, whine about their bad luck, and attack each other.

Maybe it's those "dog days" of summer. Maybe we're just cranky. I don't know.

But I do know this: It's all about perspective. The truth is, for most of us, things could almost always be worse. The next time I think I'm having a bad day, I'm going to keep the following in mind ...

I had just finished a "Personal Accountability and the QBQ!" presentation <http://www.qbq.com/speakers.php> at a banking institution in central Wisconsin where I'd talked about the dangers of blame, victim thinking, and procrastination when thirtysomething Wally walked up and told me a story. Later that day, he emailed it to me.

A few years ago I was a foreman in a manufacturing plant where I was responsible for nearly thirty workers. One of them, a likable fella who was six months away from retirement named Edward, had worked in the factory his entire life and was looking forward to his "golden years." I knew that he'd undergone an angioplasty procedure so I wasn't surprised one day at quitting time when he told me he'd be going to see his heart doctor in the morning.

But then he added, "I'm not feeling quite right."

The next day I assumed he was at the doctor's so it was no surprise to me when Edward didn't show up for work. But I was totally caught off guard when I received a call from my boss informing me that Edward had experienced a heart attack that morning and collapsed on his driveway while shoveling snow.

He never made it to his doctor's. Nor to his golden years.

Edward was gone.

After my boss and I decided to hold off on a formal announcement till the next morning, I spent the afternoon in a fog, struggling to focus on my work. When my shift finally ended, I took the shortest route from my office to my car, which is through the men's locker room. There I heard the regular sounds of an entire shift of factory workers hurriedly showering and changing their clothes in an attempt to run to their cars and get home as fast as they could. As I made my way, I overheard a group making comments about how happy they were to be done with their shift. If not for the fact that I was still trying to come to terms with Edward's passing just six months away from his golden years, the comment that I heard next may not have had such a profound impact on my life-I'll never know.

One of the guys shouted above the din, "The only good thing about today is that it brings me one day closer to retirement!"

Edward and his family came to mind.

It was at that precise moment in my life that I made the decision to live each day as positively as I can. Life is simply too short to live any other way.
----------------

"I made the decision to live each day as positively as I can"-I don't believe it can be said any better than that. Certainly, a tragic story for Edward and his family. Yet I thank Wally for sharing it because it helps me put lots of stuff in perspective.

...take it or leave it :)

Yep, that was the last major 3d project I completed. I started an Oberth but I never did get very far. I can't sit at a computer much when I get home, I spend all day on them at work.

I've considered starting a Delorean model just to see what sort of Frankenstein designs I can come up with...:deviltail:

I tried figure modeling but I could never get the bone system to work right for me in 3DMax and the tutorials for that aren't free.

This is the closest I ever got to a fully built Intrepid Class.

That was a very early model, one of the first completed mesh models I ever produced. I had a Voyager started but I lost all the work in a hard drive crash. In fact unless the people I gave the model above to still have it I have lost that one as well.

Cars, some movie costuming, and arcades and pinballs.

Used to have quite a few arcade machines but I got so fed up with how temperamental they were that I said enough is enough and am trying to only work on pinballs. Plus I cannot stand diagnosing monitor problems. Current pinball collection is: Twilight Zone, Star Trek TNG, BTTF, High Speed II: The Getaway, Lethal Weapon 3, and The Addams Family. Ones I've sold: Jurassic Park, Centaur, High Hand, Pinbot, Jurassic Park (second one).

The Addams family is the biggest project right now. Total restoration. Currently having the playfield clear-coated with automotive clearcoat.

I've kept bees for the past 25 years and at one point had 25 hives on my property. Now I'm down to a very manageable 2, and growing again. Once you're bitten (stung as the case may be) by the bug, it's hard to turn your back and walk away from another swarm.

Haha! Hell Yea!! I LOVE the Getaway. Super smooth flow and very fast. The "supercharger" is one of my favorite features of any machine. Plus so many machines are based on starting modes or mini games. The fact that on the Getaway, the goal is to actually increase the car's RPM's so that you can shift to the next gear, all the way up to "red line mania" when you redline 5th gear is such a cool idea.

Part of the shop is devoted to woodworking. Here is an accent table I'm almost through with ... sanding and finishing stage.

This little table (24 in. high) is made primarily of Black Cherry, a tree on my property that I cut down with a chain saw. Also, I used Bloodwood, Wenge, Padauk, Granadillo, Yellowheart and Ebony on the top. FWIW, the top of the table has 41 pieces of wood. Picture below shows the bizarre glue-up of the top.

I never really realized how much time I devoted to Delorean ownership. Either I'm driving it, working on it or spending time on this website ... this would count wouldn't it? However, I don't have a Delorean at the moment. She's at DPI in Ohio being 'refirbed'. Josh assured me that is an honorable word and no harm will come to her. So I have had to occupy myself til she returns. I revived this old thread to show a little of what I have done lately.

I own a small graphics company and I made each of my employees a little accent table out of Cherry. A lot of time consuming handwork and a wonderful way to stay busy if you're bent that way. The other picture is an urn I made for a friend. The family pet was put to sleep and it holds the ashes.

Anyone else had to fall back on another interest when the D is 'out of pocket'?

I keep busy with home renovations, my house is constantly under improvement. I love doing fancy molding work and tiling. I also practice jiujitsu 6 times a week, which relieves stress. I get my biggest joy watching my boys do judo, and teaching them and other teenagers how to grow into being positive people. Because our classes are packed with people ranging from teenagers to 50 year olds, we get people from all walks of life and from all backgrounds. It's amazing how the younger guys are so appreciative of us older guys time and experience.

One of my interests is V8 Supercars, a motor racing format in Australia.

Years back the races were not broadcast live, were heavily trimmed, and full of commercials so I began *cough* tapping into the raw satellite feed for each circuit and have been watching uninterrupted live coverage ever since.

Also tapped into a data feed and wrote my own software to display all sorts of telemetry and statistics for what's happening on the circuit, wrote code to scroll latest news onto a LED sign, etc.

All set up in an outdoor area with plenty of feeds, outdoor kitchen I've built, bar, fridge, etc... most recent addition last year was a feed in the toilet, yes seriously, so we don't miss a second of the action whilst taking a leak :)

I also enjoy building props and decorating for my annual Halloween yard haunt.

Thanks! I've had DeLorean kite designs in mind for years, but never took it any further - never tried building my own kite. Most of what I fly comes from Gomberg Kites in Oregon: http://www.gombergkites.com/

Wow that's impressive. What's the skin made out of?

Wooden frame is covered with Dacron. This is a first cousin to sail cloth; except it heat shrinks. It is a super light weight, airplane wing covering type of fabric, used on crop dusters. As a result, this 14ft canoe weights only 20lb.

I'm from Minnesota and that skin looks pretty delicate. How tough is it?

Ryan S.
03-28-2013, 01:29 PM
Tough enough for my use in lakes and gentle rivers. Or as a home decoration piece. Skin is coated with varnish and can withstand some pretty heavy forces and impacts. However, sharp objects like broken glasses and knives will cut through the skin. But it's easy to emergency patch with some duct tapes.

It is not that difficult to build this. Took me about 60 hours. Compare to D projects, it's far less frustrating and rather therapeutic. You just need a decent table saw and a few other wood working tools. Here is a link to websites for more info.

My hobbies seem insignificant compared to everyone else's. And I don't have any cool pics to share, either. But I have some time on my hands today...

I've been involved in music since I was two and started playing the piano. I picked up the trumpet when I was ten, and because it's easier and more portable it's my main instrument now. I'm in four groups now -- a rock band, a classical wind ensemble, a jazz combo, and a big band, the latter of which works only during Carnival season. I also write and arrange music when ideas come to me -- I have a sketchbook, and a keyboard that I use to record ideas at the computer. Meanwhile, throughout the year I play in pickup orchestras for theater productions, and at churches for services and weddings. I was even hired once to play in the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, which means I have worked for them in two capacities: once as a trumpet player, and once as a voiceover artist. (VO is my other "side job." Gotta fund my DeLorean somehow.)

I spend enough time in the kitchen, and I'm good enough at it, to consider cooking a hobby. At least that's what my girlfriend tells me. She also calls me a "handyman." I take both of those comments with a grain of salt, but maybe there's some truth to them. I have done a lot of work around houses over the years, including minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work. But it's not as fun as cooking, and you can't eat your work. Still, she says I'm good at it.

I "restore" old audio, by which I mean that I take old LPs, 45s, and 78s and clean them up on my computer. I am teaching myself electronics: although I have always built my own computers, I lacked the nitty-gritty knowledge to tell anyone *why* something works or doesn't, and that bugged me.

I'm a writer, of sorts. One of my English teachers told me over and over to "get published," but I don't know how to, so I have a blog instead, which is mostly about DeLorean stuff so it's not widely read. The rock band I am in also does a bit of comedy using their on-stage personae -- they did webisodes for a while but no one in the group wanted to put that much effort into a lark anymore, so I have written a few "radio plays" to be released as podcasts instead. The first story is a four-parter, and Part One is in production. I also read history and sci-fi when I can.

I think that covers everything. I used to draw and paint when I was younger but don't have time for it anymore. (I still sketch things, though, including ideas for DeLorean dashboards, instrument clusters, and consoles... LOL) I also used to do some woodworking, but that's a time-consuming hobby as well. I plan on getting back to those, maybe, if I ever retire from radio, or when I can't play trumpet anymore.

I like to golf quite a bit and playing volleyball is a close second. I watch waaaaay too much sports. Baseball is my favorite (go Blue Jays!) and hockey or football second. Like to read, often non-fiction (like say Quiet by Susan Cain for example), but paperback fiction too like Vince Flynn's stuff and years ago I plowed through a number of the continuing Star Wars books (Timothy Zahn, etc.).

And LEGO. I don't think of it as "playing" with Lego, lol, not with sound effects anyway. Building, relaxing, or just keeping your mind busy with a harmless hobby. I put a yacht/boat together years ago and never had the heart to take it apart, and since then has been a few of the Star Wars sets.

Here's a couple pics of the Lego boat and other sets and a golf pic from out west near Calgary (where the scenery is hard to describe) and another from a place in northern Michigan where a few of us go each year. This hole is #13 on the Arthur Hills course at Boyne and is a fun par 5, but the height of the back tees relative to the fairway makes for a contest each year to see who can actually reach the fairway from the tips. We play off tee boxes much closer :)

Lego! Don't talk to me about Lego!!!

If you have some free time Jonathan and enjoy a challenge, come visit.

I have a tote (actually several totes) with the parts from about 60 sets in it/them. I estimate about 10,000 pieces. All mixed in together. We are slowly sorting though them, reassembling them and then usually selling them on line. As far as an hourly $ rate of return, it is pathetic, but there is a certain satisfaction about making a set whole again. Sure, we could just sell the tote as-is or donate the whole thing, but it's a fun family activity.

My wife just picked up 10188 - Death Star, with "some pieces missing". It's a 3800 piece set (on top of the 10k above). I know that all the mini figs are gone, but who knows what else. This one will be fun.

I would have posted this sooner, but for the life of me I couldn't find this picture.

Here it is...

I definitely know what you mean about totes of random pieces and old sets. I believe I still have all of the pieces for these sets/instructions. I have gone through the totes and at least sorted it somewhat, looking for any pieces the dog chewed or that got snapped or whatever. A lot of the pieces are in that boat, but at some point I would love to reassemble them. We shall see...

Just rejoined the DeLorean community after an 8 year hiatus. About every two years I pick up a car that I think is undervalued and poised to make a comeback. Usually I am tinkering in the garage with one of them. This is the collection so far. Don't mind the wife's H2 in the picture. That wasn't part of the plan.18059

I am into classic arcade machines and have a home arcade and I like Radio Control airplanes, although I didn't fly any, last summer. I also like to do outdoor movies on my driveway during the summer a couple times a season.

This video of my arcade is before I added Gyruss and removed Frogger. I also added 3000 watt rack mount amp and two 12 inch and two 10 inch Peavey DJ speakers and a record player for my classic albums.

Here is another custom multi machine that I made for a friend from an NBA Jam. I can put it back to original in 30 min. if the owner wanted it to.

The one thing I love equal to DeLoreans (of course my wife has the #1 slot - okay, I'm covered if she ever sees this!) is collecting Lionel trains. And as with DeLoreans and my obsession with 83's (Black/light gray interior) I'm focused in on Standard Gauge from the 1930's. If anyone else on the forum even knows what I am talking about, I'll flip out :) I think it is great that people need/have a hobby FROM their hobby! Cheers!
