... this time for its tail lights. Our cars have been showing up in "main stream" media quite a bit lately!

Yeah, there's even a DeLorean on the cover of this week's Austin Chronicle (full page). The cars definitely seem to have rounded some sort of a corner when it comes to respect as classic automobiles.

Nice exhaust plumbing on that D!

And I have to agree, next to the doors those tail lights scream 80's! I would buy a pair with a part of a rear bumper just to hang up and illuminate my man corner... And I say corner, because my house is unfortunately void of a man cave...

Reason why I don't is a rear bumper cover costs a whopping 1225, and a right and left tail lamp add another 240... Then add some budget for DIY wiring to make them light up... and voila... ~1600 dollar wallart... And a seriously unhappy wife.

*LMAO*

Add a mirror to the license plate hole and you could get away with it. ;)

Hahaha... plus... I can see myself in a DeLorean... sorta...

Yeah, that was lame...

Years ago I took a merchandising class in which I was told that fashion trends run roughly on a 30 year cycle. If this still holds true, stuff from the '80s should start to make a comeback now. Perhaps this is the case with our cars??

Interesting. I never considered the tail lights to be one of the car's stronger features. There's nothing overly clever or distinct about them, but at least its good publicity.

Are you kidding me? Those taillights are out of this world!

When I can mistake Camaros for DeLoreans based on their tail lights, it hurts my perception of them as "unique" or "exotic" parts. That's not a fault of the DeLorean, but a simple, unfortunate, after-the-fact association; much like the lame BTTF jokes.

Wow... Delorean in Jalopnik again this week:

http://jalopnik.com/5834160/ten-sexy-crap-cars/gallery/2

A little less complimentary, but at least they still say it's desireable (and they gave it a nice 40 hp bump, too!

Don't forget...there's that word again...heavy...

"Why It's Sexy-But-Crappy: It's one of the most memorable and iconic cars of the 1980s with its stainless steel body and gullwing doors. But it's so slow that an entire film franchise is based on the premise that something magical happens if the car manages to hit 88 mph. Unfortunately, the heavy stainless steel car is tied to a wimpy Peugeot-Volvo-Renault engine that put out a dinky 170 horsepower on a good day. But who cares? It looks great."

I have to say that the rear lights are probably my favorite feature of the car.

this time it is #5 in the Ballsiest car Companies ever

Why it's got cojones: John Z. DeLorean, the eminently successful, perhaps even legendary product man at GM in the 1960s, decided he could do better without the shackles of corporate structure weighing him down, and he set off to build the perfect sports car. He may not have thought that his plan was so ballsy when he started off, but the scale of his undertaking was certainly clear when he was walking out of the Sheraton Plaza in handcuffs in 1982. The DMC story is quickly growing into legend, but in its infamous failure we can see just the kind of ambition wrapped up in the Delorean Motor Company.

and at #3:

3.) Delorean-era Pontiac

Suggested By: thisISaRant

Why it's got cojones: Pontiac built up an enviable position in the 1960s and early 1970s, with top-selling, desirable, beautiful, exciting products. In today's automotive world, this kind of success comes from due diligence and mainstream conservatism. It's been true ever since the Camry came to American shores. Back in Pontiac's golden years, success came on the back of flouting GM's internal doctrines of no racing! no big engines! no wild performance! It showed a lot of chutzpah to put out cars like "the Humbler" and the original GTO, but unlike many ambitious carmakers before and since, Pontiac turned boldness into success.

And with that the photo. I have never seen it before. Looks like a Gold DeLorean?

ive seen that photo before... at first glance it looks like just yellow lighting causing a 'gold' effect, but on closer inspection, it is obvious the interior is saddle brown. looks to me like a manual transmission, and the passenger door looks to be uniform color with the rest of the panels... so, by process of elimination the car should be VIN 4300.

Intersting. To me, it looks like a yellow light on the car, and the interior looks gray. It's got a Right-front fender antenna... Does that help identify it as one of the gold ones?

a rear bumper just to hang up and illuminate my man corner
I have a bumper with lights (rigged with bulbs) hanging on my wall. Everyone that sees it loves it (and not just DeLorean people). You should do it!

looking at the photo again, i can definitely see how the lighting might make the interior look gray... i was comparing the color of the interior leather/vinyl to the gray headliner; makes the interior look saddle brown to me, but im not going to put any money on it.

i have photos of all three gold DeLoreans and the only one without a fender antenna is VIN 20105. good catch. that definitely rules that one out, and since VIN 4301 has a black interior, that would only leave VIN 4300, which would help confirm my previous hypothesis.

is my logic sound?
