"Oh, look at me, I still have my dustshields in place, aren't I so special."

NOPE. Dustshields belong detached and in a corner of your garage with all the other stuff you've taken off your car but cannot bear to throw away.

So stop being a STUPID HIPPIE and take them off.

THAT IS ALL.

You should cut yours up and make a water shield for your fuel pump boot.

Maybe I am missing something but isn't the dustshield what turns the angle drive?

This dustshield does that:

I wasn't aware the community put a moratorium on the air deflector plates! What's the main reason to get rid of them?

Do they protect or cover anything super important like the fuel filter or connections to the fuel filter? I ask because I'm very "noob" in this area...:wrenchin:

I love the new signature. Is that the trailing arm bolt cover? I took mine off when I did tabs and my lazy self hasn't gotten around to cleaning and putting it back on yet. So far the car hasn't fallen apart without the covers.

This is so funny. My car's previous owner removed them for me, but I still have them sitting around in my garage somewhere. He claimed that it exposed the cooling line for even better cooling, which I thought was B.S. I've never bothered looking into this since I see no reason to put them back on. Seems pretty far fetched to me. What little heat that could escape from that little area probably won't make a hill of beans difference in the grand scheme of things.

Aha let’s not forget the Dust Sheilds at the left front and right front brake discs.
Part numbers 100264 and 100265 on page 6/1/0 of the Parts Manual.

When Sam Hill started this thread with, “dustshields” the brake disc dust shield is what popped into my head.

Mine have been pulled off for some time now. I put them back on and thought...what the hell is wrong with me? Needless to say, they are off now.

I've been to North Korea and I must say I hate communism. Needless to say, I will be leaving my dust shields off since I don't like communism.

I just re-read my post. I don't know what I was thinking! Maybe its because I am being attacked by a two year old and a 5 year old right now. Needless to say, I am being attacked.

One of my TA shields partially detached and tore off a CV boot. That was a fun discovery:

When I first got my car someone noticed mine were missing. Being the anal, everything must be perfect guy I am, I wanted to replace them but I realized something:

With the shields in place, there is no way to clean and wax the trailing arms. I never ordered them because I can't figure out why in the world they are there to begin with...unless it's to help trap mud and water.

Actually, I have been told they are there to protect the trailing arms, etc. from gravel. According to a few, they help direct air to the engine and/or aid in fuel economy(which seems to be the standard answer when they don't really know, but want to sound like they know). I think they do more harm than good and they are with the likes of the car bra(you know, that piece of fabric that traps all the dirt between it and the bumper when it rains, so when the wind hits it, it's just like an orbital sander). Or those hideous door edge guards, which rub the jam a little everytime you close the door, causing ALL the paint to rub off the jamb and the door skin it rest's against...ya much better than the occasional door edge chip.

I doub't I will ever order the shieds.

With the shields in place, there is no way to clean and wax the trailing arms.

3 Step Process:
1. Remove shields
2. Clean and wax area in question.
3. Replace shields.

.

I have never really driven without them but I am betting that GENERALLY after things are all nice and clean, the shields help keep these areas cleaner longer.

I don't buy for a minute there is anything wrong with keeping them on the car. First, they are part of the cars original design, second they actually harder to put back on and line up correctly than they are to take off but unless you have the patience of a two year old they are not a problem. Third they are not a safety problem, a cosmetic nightmare or causing any significant part of the car to work incorrectly. I would think you'd be a commie (or at least a socialist) if you were still running 100% Lucas electronics.... Especially since this is possibly the weakest feature of the Delorean! While the worst thing that can be said for properly installed shields is they might be considered dead weight!

i agree with Dan, is this some kind of joke thread? now im no clean freak but i happen to clean my Delorean more often than my own bathroom. ive stripped and painted my trailing arms and painted them with glossy black paint, and every few weeks they get a bit dirty but im talking some dust and water spots. I drive my car near daily in all weather conditions, a 10 minute job of car lifting, wheel unbolting, TA wiping clean and re attaching the wheel is not a problem.

TA shields are strange, can fight you when installing, and did rub on my newly painted axles after i lowered the car but they probably do something

Que ex Lotus/DMC employee to explain the TA shield purpose.
