What function does it accomplish? My early car has obviously never had had one installed...

I believe you are talking about the insulation for the ignition coil wire? As I understood it, it was to help with radio reception by limiting electrical interference. I've also heard that it makes almost no difference.

Hmm, maybe that is why I get a crackle at higher rpms...

Was that electrical interference/crackling only supposed to come and go while using the radio antenna, or would it affect things while using tape or CD or iPod (assuming you have a newer deck)?

From what I can remember, it was present at all times.
BTW, I use a Kenwood double din paired with an alpine amp mounted in the frunk.
