OK, Has anybody else seen this and/or know anything about it and the artist? I don't think he understands the property of stainless steel - but he is an artists so it is open for interpretation. :-)

I remember seeing images of this on Facebook a couple months ago.

I tend to agree with your assessment. I can't help but wonder if the artist recognizes the irony in "eroding" the body of the one production car that would theoretically stand up to corrosion better than any other. My guess is he's just a child of the 80s that thought it would be cool to do art with a DeLorean, regardless of stainless steel's corrosion resistive properties.

Was going to make a joke about the gas struts doing some fantastic work over 1000 years but they're not depicted.

Seriously hope the car was beyond repair before he did this to it..

+1 . Absolutely asinine.

Hard to say. These photos are from the artist's instagram account. I don't see a tail pipe poking out the back so it looks as though there isn't a drivetrain. With that said, there still appears to be a frame and pretty decent body that was... modified.

If I'm seeing this right it doesn't look like
any holes were cut into the stainless, but body
putty made to give the appearance of holes...

I like it. Pretty interesting to see the melding of stainless and decay. Flawless straight steel panels with random destruction. I especially like the second photo where the car has a weathered wash over everything. I bet the finished piece has no real color to the tail lamps or trim.

Considering the car looks to have a Beverly Hills Car Club license plate it might not have been good for much else. I do find his thought of the car eroding that much...and the tires still holding air amusing.

I like it as well. The optical illusion of deep gashes and holes are convincingly done. Grey Borg motif. It has appeal and connects to all the experiences the car has endured. If indeed there is no drive train, this car is worth more now as art.

Check out some of the other finished shots from the link. They are cut thru in places. Some of the shots Nick found were in the process of making shots.

I don't think that this is an illusion. It certainly appears to me that the holes in the stainless are indeed holes (lots of stainless removed). In fact I recall seeing other photos of just the little erosion caverns being sculpted (the hood one specifically) before it was placed on the inside of the hood, after the large hole in the hood was added. There was another photo from above where you can see straight through the hole in the driver side door roof section. This photo kind of shows it. Same with the rear quarter panel; definitely missing stainless:

If I had to speculate, I was guess that to get the jagged effect, the artist actually deliberately corroded the stainless. Stainless steel is far from corrosion proof. Something as simple as pool chlorine would eat straight through our 304 panels over time without too much heartache. My assumption (could be wrong) is that this is what is occurring in this photo:
57268.

The artist likely saturated a cloth/sponge/putty/template/something with a corrosive solution, then adhered it to the stainless for a period of time until it ate through.

It is an interesting thought about possibly being a BHCC find. That does make a lot of sense. There have certainly been some cars sent there where the had limited future beyond something like this.

As I was killing time before the soccer starterd today, I have been doing a little research, and I will offer a counter theory to Nick's, excellent though it is.

Look at this video of the work in progress, specifically at around 2:39

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eTmL3bWofs

To me, it looks like the holes were cut out with a torch or grinder. At a guess, the cardboard above is a template both for the hole and the mould that he makes the crystals in.

Just a thought.

As for the car itself, my best guess is that it is this one, assuming that it did indeed come from BHCC

https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1981-delorean-dmc-c-6162.htm

Based on:
Grey/Auto
Auto shifter with medallion
Console clock
Door mounted grab handle
Fender mounted aerial
Before March 2017 (first instance of it at his place, though I couldn't locate that last pic from Nick showing the BHCC tag)

There is the minor in-congruence that the one linked has an engine and a dirty frame.

There were only a couple of BHCC cars that were sold without engines and they were generally trashed throughout, where as the subject car seems in decent shape, even down to the dash and binnacle

This whole concept reminds me of an article
in Car and Driver or Road and Track of ways to
utilize old Yugo cars. Everything from BBQ'S,
dog houses and bookshelves. Neat if someone
could find it and post....

OK, the exhibition is now open until Oct 21. at Galerie Perrotin (https://www.perrotin.com/artists/Daniel_Arsham/17) in Manhattan’s Lower East Side

I hope someone can make it down and get some good shots and maybe see if it has a VIN.

I like how it's supposed to be his " dystopian vision of the future" yet those door struts are still holding the doors all the way open. Let me get a set of those too!

A big thanks to my friend Cindy who took some photos for me (and the DeLorean Community).

Cindy was in NY to visit her daughter and she had a few free hours one day to stop by the exhibit.

For those who have been wanting to know the VIN of this "art car", it's VIN..6738.

Set 1 of photos attached in this post below. Set 2 to be attached in the next post.

Thanks,
Rich W.

A few observations of the "art car" [VIN..6738]

- Automatic (interior has shifter in place)

- Missing drive-train (no engine / no trans)

- "Eroded" (Rusted) Frame (front crumple tube section)

- "Eroded" (Rusted) Frame (rear engine cradle area)

Fantastic pics there, Rich. Thanks to Cindy for taking them.

I wonder what the history of the car was? Did the artist buy it without a drive train?

Equally, what's it's future now after the show.

I'm really trying to find something positive to say about this car. I really am.

But for me personally, I think this car is towards the top of the list of stupid things people have ever done to a DeLorean.

Maybe I just don't understand "art" but for some reason I find this one particularly awful. It's right up there with the DeLorean Old Spice ruined by covering it with fake sand. At least some of that car was able to be salvaged afterwards. http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?8963-What-s-this-D-covered-in-It-s-a-mess

Looks like someone got too excited and 'exploded' too much high gloss J12 all over the room. Similar to putting a grenade in a tin of white paint, but s lot more satisfying. ..
