After 30 years of dreaming of owning one of these beautiful, rolling pieces of art, I finally can say that I'm "Living the Dream"! It is VIN 03676, Sept. '81 build. The previous owner swapped the K-Jet system/intake for a Peugeot 604 2bbl intake and a Motorcraft 2bbl 1.21 carb. I only drove it around the parking lot at DMC Midwest, but I fell in love the moment I laid my eyes on it. It obviously needs some interior love, the stainless needs some dents repaired and a re-grain, bumpers need a re-paint, louvers need a scuff/repaint, etc, but it's a running/driving project that I can cruise around as I piece it back to my idea of perfection! It's currently at DMC Midwest getting a few things done (e-brake fixed, steering bushing installed, putting on a mint flat hood to replace the dented up grooved hood, and an AC leak test. After that, it's getting shipped up to me in Superior WI.

Also, I need to give a huge shout-out to my good friend Nick Pelant for showing me the amazing collection of DeLoreans he and his father has last fall and reigniting the spark I had for these cars. If it wasn't for him, I probably would still have the DeLorean love hidden away in the back of my mind. This happened because of you, so thank you Nick, from the bottom of my heart. I'll always be greatful for everything you've done, and for your amazing friendship.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/ce663f50dbc1112be39d87bfab702a28.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/a1f53a9090d593507f72437846a2b277.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/0a2635d132a5c06e85216d53d543cb9f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/a4b4da86b067aaaa62c291f8c2bbf8d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/1b2130530265cf4f6b51cacc9d078e30.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/f8dcb11e1bc3ad0801865386dd968140.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/3a2caa350a26444713bce4545b8b12f4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/b5809871ccaeedd2336ffb78c2cacd4d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/143b937dda6a3dc7973c4fd81d788804.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200204/0d66999d89104d782303342cca8a1d2b.jpg

If so then it's the car that was supposedly restored on the "Lost in Transmission" TV show. Actually I think the show just swapped another car in it's place and passed it off as restored. There was something about it that didn't add up and if memory serves they had 2 cars (although one incomplete) when they were done and somewhere along the way vin 1269 was the end result.

Congrats!!! I remember this car from the bumper sticker haha. Here it is on May 25, 2018 when I went to DMC MW to look at VIN 2282, which I ended up purchasing. Mike and Suzy are the best. Enjoy!

There is something about that car that I love. Most people would argue my choice with a car but I love it and everything it stands for. It definitely has my vote. I'm sure you will have it restored soon and no doubt will enjoy the process of making it great again. I bet by November, it will be everyone's favorite.

Thanks for all of the love everyone! I got the car delivered by DMC Midwest last Saturday and I've been tinkering ever since. Since it's arrival, I replaced all of the door lights with LED's and put some tinfoil in the light buckets to spread the light out (they're almost TOO bright), bought a set of used re-upholstered covers for the seats from another DMC owner and recovered the pass side lower dash pad. Neither the seats or the dash pad vinyl really matches the original grey, but it looks much better than sun baked and cracked pieces. I think I'm just going to get everything in good working order and just drive it this year...learn the car, if you will. Next winter the car will be stored and that's when the interior will really go under the knife. It will be going back to the original black interior that the VIN calls out for. A few custom touches here and there, but black.
Anyway, here's a few pictures I have taken since the delivery.

Brodie,

You failed to mention you work at an upholstery shop. ;-) Tackling that interior redo should be pretty comfortable for you. Btw, do know why the Driver door window was removed? Bad regulator or something else?

Anyway, the window was not removed. I was told it will not move back up. I'm guessing the window motor is burned up. Those aren't cheap either...but I'm gonna try to find a good used one if I can.

Our database indicates this is an automatic transmission car, but by the photos, it looks like a manual. It also shows the car was once painted black, but the older pictures Michael cited showed purple (or some such color). Can you verify any of this?

Also, would you say the mileage?

Thanks,
Thomas

...Where are you seeing that it was an automatic car? It was painted purple at one point. My car has been rebuilt from about 4 or 5 different cars to make this one. The only thing original to the car are the VIN tags and the wheels and a few other little things. Chad told me the fiberglass tub was destroyed sobhe swapped the VIN tags to a clean tub. The frame, engine and transmission have about 8k miles on it and was out of TX donuts not only low mileage, but rust free.

Here is the link for VIN 3676 (http://www.citizenkidd.com/dmc/pages/vinview_disp.aspx?start=3676).

Based on the info you provided, Chad probably swapped the trans. out for a manual. No problem, we can easily update the database.

Thanks.

...Actually, no. The VIN was always a 5-speed. I just watched an episode of "Lost in Transmission" that featured the original car, and it was a black interior, 5-speed manual.

Got around to installing the front SPAX shocks and Hervey lowering springs. I have some poly front seat bar bushings coming from DeLoreanGo as well, but I have to pull the bar anyway to do the radiator replacement, so good timing on that. I think once I start driving it, the springs will lower a bit more. It doesn't look like much, bit it's quite a bit lower.

I also removed the intake manifold due to seeing coolant puddles in the VOD. Upon inspection of the carb setup, it was pretty much hacked together. Does it work? Yes. Could it be better? Absolutely! I'm bringing the entire setup to a friend of mine today and see if he can't come up with a custom adapter for the carb.

After this mess is figured out, the cooling system is next. I have an all-new rubber hose and clamp kit from DeLoreanGo and an aluminum radiator. Gotta do a pressure test to make sure the water pump is still in good shape and doesn't leak.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/e2926ae47d350788c1de01f73d8c951d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/0e96c08aa8997403143fcf6dbbfc627a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/91d9ad1e0d0998762400fcfbcedbc708.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/0f5aa99506a4feaf655424d212468d53.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/0998603c3babc43733daab8cc3c85439.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/0d9c6af87e0f84dd6bb9e789de7e0c36.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/5e08816ab6de4996de2312608e603231.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/b32fbdada88c678a2c1f7c53230186d5.jpg

I was planning on getting an adapter and a good working carb combo from Bill to replace the homemade piece that the previous owner put together (pictured above), but with all of this COVID-19 business, I don't think it's wise to drop money on the car at this point in time. The setup works, but again, Bill's setup would be more efficient. I think I'm going to talk to some local fabricator friends and see if they can find a way to make this setup work better.

In the meantime, I'm just looking over the car and came back to the inside of the pass side roof panel where the door hinges. It's got a bit of scaly rust, but it's still solid metal. I took a stainless wire brush and cleaned up what I could, then took a flathead and scraped off some more of the heavier scaling. Looks much better, but I think I'm going to have to remove the riveted weatherstrip piece to see what it looks like under there, which looks like there's more scaly rust. Not sure how to treat this all, but I have a brand new quart can of KBS RustSeal, so I'll probably end up wrapping the torsion bar with tinfoil to mask it off, then carefully paint the inside of that area with the RustSeal.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/3aa730ecdbfeeac8d6ae13316da2d42a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/865b7dfe785b38a5ed6fffc1e8cedbca.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/5cf4465a7f64ba1b556d3d6756141f1a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/050ecc5f2f2c8b80be21411304ff3365.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/f02258a505f2def07398f0bb610db9d3.jpg

Looked in my car detailing product arsenal and found this ZEP degreaser that is made for aluminum, and WOW did it work amazingly on my Peugeot intake! Used some various steel brushes, toothbrush, nylon drill brushes and Q-tips, and all of the dirt, grime and grease is gone! I kind of want to find someone who does aluminum oxide/glass bead blasting and have them do my intake manifold and the valve covers to see if the bead blasting actually does a slight "polish" to them.
Also, I hate the small round air cleaner. To me, it makes the engine look like a small block Chevy or something. I picked up a 14" triangle air cleaner and plan on scuffing/painting it with a matte black and epoxying an extra grille emblem I had onto the lid. Will give the car a bit more of a custom look.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200322/844bdd3e3dcd59e47ae7f1dba60b218d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200322/d67859f116341202a753e0730d59cd88.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200322/599225f784caf5e44eb547bae5fb03e9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200322/5d616eed8ffed4594125d044618626c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200322/26ad5267be616e073c67c9ac7daf42c4.jpg

The carb will be fully rebuilt tonight, and the intake/adapter will be drilled tomorrow. I still have to take a carbide bit and go to town on the carb ports on the manifold and smooth out the transition.

What's the "deep dive" project on yours? I can't wait to have our cars together this summer! At least, I'm hoping you can make the trip with yours at least once.

I heard Cirrus furloughed a lot of people...you on the list? We have about 55 people employed at SCS Interiors and Mike furloughed about 45 people today until Cirrus ramps up again. I was one of the "lucky" ones to stay working. I was praying I wasn't...I wanna get the car done, damnit! [emoji23]

Deep dive, Rear main seal housing leak and driver side transmission seal leak. So I’ll be pulling the transmission for the 4th and hopefully last time in 26 years.

A few things have happened since the last update. Ordered some good used headliner boards from Mike @DMC Midwest, and ordered some headliner material at work that I matched up to the color I want to redo the interior in.

Also this weekend I got the car running again with the rebuilt carburetor and revised manifold-to-carb adapter I made. It wants to idle a bit high (1300rpm) so I'll have to look into that after I put the cooling system back together. I started the cooling system restoration, only to come to an abrupt halt. 4 of the aluminum coolant pipes need to be replaced (bad corrosion where the rubber hose mounts to) and the water pump is super rusty. I just ordered a new Volvo water pump and getting a bolt-on pulley from DeLoreanGo. I'm going to wait to order from DeLoreanGo though until I've exhausted my trying to find good used coolant pipes.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/4be75720dbf58b4e255cb2f8dbd68604.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/7aadc9102bf82af3349317b8f3b41e76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/115372ba9fbf4af172c3e5217c888942.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/6dfa27c734b1ba4e372dc821a0873c96.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/1253cbabe2189012fa9bbe2012f04cab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/06abb6fd04b12f0cda851195eb81235c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/9aae352a465d35d7ce0e63d9530449c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/9e31a0bfc87983bcac9af6e0b2ee7b13.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/d7bbae47aa5b70f77c3d6bee10c40e40.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/62f9007f88b3d1b7984252e60c79ec04.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200413/b8366d2563e4ec0d96aa2f9d61f6a757.jpg

After looking at that last image, now imagine what the inside of the block and heads look like. When you do eventually start putting things back together, you should consider adding a de-rusting flushing agent and do multiple coolant exchanges over a period of months.

Btw, be cautious of the 3 M8 bolts holding the water pump. Mine all snapped off. Might be prudent to have a torch available to heat and let cool the bolt heads. Or if you have access, the lugs themselves. Having the intake off will let see what is going on.

Good Luck [emoji1696]
