Ok, it took a couple of weeks but it seems this is the best time for folks and most don't mind a drive to the mountains. So here are the details:

WHEN: Saturday October 22nd, show up when you like, I'll be out there by 9:00am, til no later than 5:00, I got a dinner party to crash.
WHERE: My place, I'll pm an address when folks start to RSVP
WHAT: Anything really, so bring your cars and we will get at it. Since I need to roll early we could plan a cruise to Ron's place, pretty awesome drive.

So, all that said, please RSVP here with a time you will arrive, if you'll have your car and what you would like done to your car or what you'd like to see how to do.

So far who is in:
Kyle, tentative sans D
Derek, yes replace cam cover oring
Ben, most likely with car to do brakes
Ron, 50/50 with D
Sean
Mike with no D
Steve 50/50, with D replace CV boots.

unless you're teaming up with the Hooter's food bus and dahlonega is a stop, I don't see myself making it to another eye candy get together until Christmas time.

There's a chance now that I won't be making it after all. Apparently even though I let my sister know I have plans for Saturday (the tech day), she went ahead and made all day plans with the family for my mom's birthday. So, to avoid being the schmuck of the family that weekend, I may be doing those plans instead....

OK, My D is out (painter:bawling:).

What are we going to do about lunch? I guess it depends on how long we'll be be working at Sean's and if anyone wants to cruise??? -- I'm thinking chip in for one of the old stand-bys (Pizza, etc) if we run out of time or interest? If not, it's ~1hr from Sean's to our place across the mountain and the Master said she could have us whatever we wanted by the time we got here, with a little heads up. I have one shop bay free (and a gravel lot) just in case we want to play the work end by ear...

Other projects?
Tools?

Time is getting short...WEIGH IN!!!

sean

I swear if I didn't drive to your place and see it, I'd wonder if you had a D!

As for tools, the only thing I can think of is the boot clamp crimp for Steve but if he cant make it then nevermind.

As for lunch, we could cut out of my place around 12/1:00 and cruise to a place in town then you guys can make the run to your place, awesome drive btw!

Yeah, it should be fun. I was thinking about getting a hotel room somewhere Saturday night. I've got all day Sunday to drive home anyway.

On a positive note, I just got off the phone with Julie at DMCMW and the boots are now on order. I'm pretty certain I'll have them in time.

Thank you! Handle should get here tomorrow. Passenger side was already done, so just driver side. I can probably work on it with adult supervision :-)
It's not very cool to have to crawl on the passenger side to open the door...

I'll have a box full of parts with me, so any help/feedback on getting them installed will be much appreciated. I've had the car since '88 but I've only driven it for about 3 of all those years...

'see you Saturday!

It looks like I definately will be able to make it, unless the car breaks down on the way. My redneck cruise control is now installed and I've got my spare fuel pump stashed away in my storage compartment.

I'm planning to leave from work Friday and I'll drive until the car falls apart or I get sleepy. I plan to stop and sleep somewhere along the way, and then I'll hit the road early Saturday morning.

Eh, i need about another can, and might try and fill on saturday, but because it still leaks some, i should replace my last small a/c hose with the pressure switch. That is the only other area i would think could contribute to a small leak. Ie. One can a year.
I dunno ron. Maybe ill just skip ac this time. Next tech session maybe we can replace the line going from condenser to dryer, and pressure switches.

though I've been told with my bipolar disorder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLWXHEfuZM0) and monotone voice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCf-XxJf1YI) it is really hard to tell the difference at times. -_-

Oh well. No hard feelings man. A lot of people love the flag without any hate, and I guess I just have a different opinion. Sorry if I offended you.

Anyway, we've all got things we disagree on. Sometimes its best just to agree to disagree.

I was thinking the same thing! See you guys next time!

We did!
By my count we:
Replaced 4 CV boots
Replaced Driver's side door handle
Replaced Driver's side inner door seal
Replaced a set of front breaks
Fixed a fuel filter leak
Replace a set of AC idler bearings
Diagnosed many issues
Mocked each other for random things
Waited WAY to long for food and drink at a crazy busy Dahlonega

like always, I neglected to take pics :angry0:. I had to leave the guys after a late lunch so I'm not sure who made the ride up to Ron's but it was a great day for it. If I didn't have plans tonight I think we would have gotten more done and I would still be a Ron's now. Anyway, we had the following states represented:
Louisiana
Tennessee
South Carolina
Georgia

6 DeLoreans in attendance if you count mine.

Man, sounds like a hell of a tech day!

Ended up spending they day out taking mom to lunch, then the kids to the pumpkin patch, followed by an evening of pumpkin carving for the kids and cooking dinner for mom's 80th. Can't say it wasnt worth it, since it was her bday, but the tech day would have been fun.

Hello! It was great meeting all of you. I hope everyone made it back home OK (I know Steve, you must still be driving back).

I had an uneventful trip back except when I got to Gatlinburg I got stuck in stop-and-go traffic, and between pressing the brakes and the headlights my voltage was dropping quite a bit. So I turned the headlights off and just had the marker lights on. When I went to turn them back on, the switch went crack and got stuck inside - so I drove back the last 1/2 mile with no lights. The good thing is that it didn't happen earlier or I would have been stuck. One more thing to fix... :-)

Thank you very much for all your help, it was great seeing how all the cars are alike but not the same. I look forward to the next meeting! And if you ever feel like coming to Gatlinburg, we can hold one at my house anytime.

Thanks!

I'll take the blame for the non-starting K-Jet. I still have my hot-start problem after the accumulator and o-rings were changed. Ron showed me that the air intake plate should have pressure behind it when the engine is turned off, but mine loses pressure fairly quickly. So, any other ideas on what else to check? and no, I am not ready to put a carb in :-)

Did you inspect the new PPR O-ring and pull all of the injectors to see if they leak when you turn the key on and pressure them up?
The cold start valve and check valve are the only other places I can think of right off that would leak internally...otherwise I'd guess a defective accumulator.
I'm betting on the o-ring or then check valve (since it didn't smell flooded).

Inspect your fuel pump too. If you have an OEM long neck pump with the internal check valve they have a tendency to fail, the check valve part, andwith maintaining rest pressure. I just notcied your vin and thought of it. But still, inspect that ppr o ring again.

It has Hervey's replacement fuel pump. New as of 3 years ago, but never run much.
We did have trouble getting it going again - it was stuck, but Kyle managed to coax it back to life. I'm not sure where the check valve is on it - inside?

sean
10-28-2011, 11:23 AM
On the newer pumps, the check valve is the threaded piece that the banjo fitting secures to, and don't really fail like the ones do on the long neck pumps where the valve is on the inside. You can actually remove the CV on new pumps but again I've never seen a new one fail.

I think Viton orings are what everyone has settled on. Some of the autoparts have them. "Regular" automotive orings will not last long at all. Any transmission shop will surely have one. See that the box/pack says viton with your own eyes.

Dave (Bitsyncmaster) had some test data for several types on .com...maybe he can chime in an tell you the exact size (and number)...

EDIT:+1 Sean. If they're on the way...just wait.

Yes I ran a swell test on the O-rings in E10 gas. Viton did not swell at all but the Nitrel would swell quite a bit.

I have been using 1.9 x 3.8 size Viton which is a little smaller than the stock 2.0 x 4.0

I like the smaller one because it never sticks inside the PPR and since the viton is a little harder is has less surface to compress.

OK, I've been poking around and I got two new issues:
1. My passenger window was not working, so I fixed the switch. The little legs were bent inside. I then rolled the window down and now it won't go back up. I can hear the motor going, but nothing happens. I removed the upped door trim (I learned how at the meet!) and the plastic guides seem to be on the tracks. I did searches on the forum but can't find any pictures of what the whole thing is supposed to look like. The workshop manual shows the guides but not how the glass fits in. Does the motor have some gears that may be broken? How can I get the glass back up and disable it for now?

2. On the way back from the meet, my console and instrument panel lights were going on an off when I hit a bump (mostly they were off). And now they are not on at all. I checked the fuse and it's OK - a little loose but wiggling it does not make the lights work. Maybe a bad ground? Are they all grounded together? I looked under the shifter but there was no ground wire there.

3. How do I remove the plastic shell (the handle) on the auto trans shifter? I see two small holes but poking in there did nothing. It is mostly all apart, but not quite, and I don't want to break it. I need to adjust the shifter as it does not reach to 1st gear.

Thanks!
Alex

Try your window with the door open.

There are a few ground wires for the dash. Is it only the lights or are some of the gauges not working also? Check you wires on the dimmer. They often work loose there.

I tried the window with the door open, but that didn't help. I also tried pulling the window up while running the motor - no good.

The only light that comes on when I turn the ignition on is the oil, and the a/c panel lights come on. Gauges work. When I turn the lights on in either position, the a/c panel lights go off, nothing else comes on. The outside lights all work fine with the switch. I took the switch apart and all looks OK inside. The back of the switch had actually come out on my way back from Sean's, and I put it back together, so maybe the switch isn't working properly. Dimmer wires OK, only 3 out of 4 connectors has a wire.

Alex,

at the bottom of the guides, at the actual motor, there is a plastic section that I am told is the typical failure point. I had the same symptoms as you, and true enough, that's what I found.

It does mean taking the rest of the door panels off, however. You will see that the motor/gearbox has probably "unwound" from the end of the guide - you'll see what I mean when you see it. It is possible to get it back in place by pushing on the motor with your hand and operating the switch with the other.

The best fix is a new unit, which has been better designed with metal instead of plastic fittings. You can do a temporary repair with a couple of carefully placed ty-wraps but they will eventually break.

I did get one A1 (as you can only order them in pairs, I combined an order with a fellow SEDOCer who needed a passenger side one). But just before they arrived I had swapped out the plastic tyraps with SS ones, which are holding up just fine. When they break, I'll take the door panel off, if I haven't been in there before, and change out the motor.

aludden
11-01-2011, 10:30 AM
OK, I figured out how to take apart the lower panel and saw the broken plastic guide as you said. The 'rope' was curled all over. I was able to roll the window back up, but I didn't see any way of patching it up since the break is right on the edge. So for now I have it all disconnected till the spring, when I will get new window motors.

I also talked to Hervey and he is sending me a new viton. I asked him about the third o-ring and he said that is not a "user-serviceable" o-ring. You have to replace the whole assembly if that one is bad. I will take it apart and check for loose or stuck bits of o-ring.

I also replaced the rear lights with LEDs, but the ones I got (18s) are not quite as bright as the incandescent. I will see if I can get them changed, otherwise I will try to make some kind of reflectors.

Thank you all for your advice!

The motor was not moving around. The end of the guide was actually sitting at the bottom of the door - I had to bend it to have it line up with the motor. I figured the motor exerts quite a bit of force when it reaches the top, so it would push out whatever fix I do. Maybe if I put a hose clamp to the guide (or two), that would give me a way to grab the guide and attach it to the motor with tie wraps or wire like you say. I may try that...

It sounds like the red-orange is not connected to the panel light relay...and the groundS or bulbs are bad in the instrument panel since other things sharing the feed work.

eg Oil works but 12v shared with batt light which does not.

I still haven't figured out how to remove the handle on the auto shifter (without breaking it)(anybody know how?), so I am only able to see the rheostat on a slant, and reach it with the tip of my fingers, but there are 4 connectors on the rheostat, and I have three connectors. Two of them have two wires each, so that makes five.

According to DMCDW Dave from a post in 2007:
The rheostat only really has two connections (each has two pins). Put the two connectors with the orange-trace wires on one of them, and the wires with
the white trace on the other.

Since I can't see the rheostat, I don't know which connections are jumpered together.
I would assume that they would be adjacent to each other.
What's puzzling is that I have:
two wires - single wire - blank - two wires

Shouldn't it be something like:
two wires - two wires - blank - single wire ?

Have you seen this on the shifter (http://store.delorean.com/c-294-4-6-0-auto-shift-linkage.aspx)?

====

The parts manual shows 4 connections on the rheostats had the DMCH site shows the replacement has 3.
If it all used to work, I wouldn't worry about it unless you've changed it. In any event, I would turn the rheostat to bright (same as tying them all together) and come back to that if needed when all the lights are burning...

You do need to get into that area and see what the PO did to the wiring. Yes the red/orange wires are on two connectors each have two wires. The orange/white wire is on the other connector. If the rheostat is working and fully clockwise is should just connect all four wires to to orange/white wire.

Hi guys!
Just a week or so out of another back surgery and trying to get healthy again. I got some heads up on this meet and really wanted/needed to come but my l5 s1 vertibra had other plans. Just sat down, coffee and logged in after a long time away and trying to catch up.
Reads like deja vu! Hot start issues..... Fuel wierdness, O RINGS:shock: Never heard of em HAHAHAHAH.
Just hang in their guy. After replacing my entire fuel system, electrical system, fuel injectors, and going through 3 fuel distributors my car runs great! I think Sean and Ron might know a little about this subject.
Ok nuff said. Just wanted to poke my head in and say Hi and hopefully I can become more active in the community again.

Well my car HATES summer but loves winter. 1st key turn into a smooth idle. And thats with the fuel thingamajig unplugged. Alot more power and no issues at all. Not needing the a/c makes it a whole different car. Hell I might even be able to take on a Honda Accord or Prius now.
Summer was another story as we know. This summer I did not drive much at all but did not have any issues at all.

Hello Jim, looking forward to meeting you. Thanks for the encouragement, I was starting to feel like I'm the one with all the problems. It seems like every time I look at one thing, I find two more issues. :8ball:

The dash illumination lights were working before the meet, but I hadn't paid attention to anything other than "does it run?". Now I am looking at gauges, idiot lights, door lights and finding that they are not working. It's hard to figure out if one issue is causing multiple problems, or they are all independent. (I will look at the ac panel wire this afternoon, Ron).

Get better soon!
Alex

Hi Farrar. Yeah Ive been medicated for a long time. Somewhere betreen Ozzy and Keith Richards. Starting to come out of it but thats a struggle in itself.

I understand these things. On the old forums I had a couple thousand post and was labeled early on as a Delorean basher. I think I have and will run into every problem this car has to offer. Its been a uneventfull summer but even so at any given time I have at least 6 things that need attention. Currently my pass window is off track or worse. Some new vibrations in the steering column. Clutch is getting a little weak. So basically I cannot complain.
If you need any tips feel free to ask. I threw money at the issues and just replaced everything which is not always the best way to go about it but I had enough of it. Problem is we still do not know what it was but we suspect the crappy o ring design in the f dist. Even after dozens of o rings including the viton it still had h start issues. Even a newly refurbed f dist was intalled and it was defective. Only after a new f dist and not mucking with its oring did the isues stop.
So as you probably already have found out. If it is working, DONT muck with it unless it really looks bad and maybe on its last leg. Only replace ONE thing at a time! That way when the car curses you for messing with it you will know the offending part.
Just because its new dont mean squat. The newer stuff is crap btw! Johns fuel pump however is great. If you suspect something is about to fail or seems wrong. ITS IS!
Ok more ramblings later. Nice to meet you.

When Kyle was here and it wouldn't hot-start, he swapped two plugs (a blue one?) in the engine bay and it started right up. Is there a not-so-elegant solution to just press a button and make that connection when you're stuck and everyone is looking at you?

Is that what Hervey's Hot start relay $19.95 with Momentary switch supposed to do?
Only issue with that is you have to open the fuse compartment and all, and I'm not sure you can do it by yourself - you have to have someone else push it?

"Now you can leave it plugged in and push the switch when it needs to be used. Internally fuse protected for safety. This little device will force the cold start valve to inject some gas every time you start the car, hot or cold. If you have a chronic problem , then try replacing the fuel accumulator to solve the starting problem."

It's about as easy to pull the breather off and hold the meter plate down a little for second or so IMO.
OR, until you fix the pressure loss, you could temporarily run a wire from the blue-black wire on the cold start valve (through a fuse) then to the light green wire on the full throttle micro switch. This would cause the cold start valve to spray as long as you held the pedal to the floor (similar to hot start way). The drawback is it would be easy to flood it when you used it, until you got used to it, and it would force normal wide open throttle rich when you were driving...might mess with the thermal enrichment a little while its cold but not a biggie...me thinks.

How long did it take to start with the plugs swapped? My hot start relay turns the CSV on after one second of cranking. No buttons to push.

With the wires crossed (actually, I think it was just one of them connected but crossed), it started right up.

Until it's fixed, I want to find some easy solution that does not involve opening the hood or relay compartment and messing with things. I just want to use it - go to the store, etc. without having to worry that it won't start. I guess that wire solution you mentioned would work, Ron, so I can try that. Has anyone had experience with Hervey's relay?
Thanks!

Yeah!!! I got parts!
I finally got a bunch of parts that I had been waiting for (and it's my birthday too!) so Kyle and I will continue working on getting the car to be fully driveable.
First order of business is changing brake pads, as Sean recommended.
Second, a full tune-up including rotor, cap, wires, o-rings and gaskets, and replacing the water pump while we have the manifold off. Any other recommendations while we are there?
I guess I should replace the vacuum hoses. Can I just buy that locally? What sizes do I need? O do I need to get Hervey's kit?
Thanks!
Alex

I just wanted to add to my previous post, that it's not that I don't want to support the Delorean vendors, but I have gotten really tired of waiting for parts from Hervey, and DMC parts are more expensive as well as their shipping/handling costs. I have to weigh my support for vendors vs. getting parts in a timely manner and within some reasonable budget. Sorry for the rant

Thats not a rant. Most of us have been in many a heated conversation with most vendors at one time or another. Well except DMC northeast maybe.
In my case thats also very much true.
My bigegst peeve is when you order something and you do not know or are told its not in stock. So you wait until you are good and steamed, call and find out its not in stock.
I once had a $$$ and big order held up and not shipped because of a 3 buck part was not in stock. And it was just one of those pad the order items I did not really need.
You gotta call John. He is a one man op and at any given time has 100 things going on. Me and him have butted heads many a time but he has some good stuff at good prices. I just ordered via online a angle drive from him and I will see how that goes.
After 3 DMCs angle drives flew apart not long after install I am going to give his a try. Also installed the 1 piece cable. This is THE LAST attempt at fixing it.
But dont sweat it to bad. In the dark ages it was dam near impossible to get anything. One vendor in cali was like the soup nazi. Glad I did not have to deal with him cuz I would have taken the car off a cliff before bowing to that kinda ego. My father bought a brand Delorean new in 81. When it broke down driving home from the dealership. Yeah thats right, on the way from the DEALERSHIP, it went back on a flatbed. Problem was the Delorean dealership mechanics had never worked on one. So we took it home and he worked on it himself.
