View Full Version : Fuel baffle in old style but updated

Today I was thinking about the fuel baffle and how it was built so it would go through the hole in the tank. That got me thinking, why didn't they just make it smaller? Hervey's set up drops straight into the tank with a little compression. I can't see the original baffle having any more useful fuel holding capacity than Hervey's (if it had a solid base with smaller holes) on a low tank except for its location. What if an updated baffle was built with a smaller yet deeper baffle that had an extension to put it in the location of the old baffle?

I have Hervey's baffle system in my D. I live in a flat area and don't run my tank less than half empty because of my broken fuel sender so I've not had any issue. When I took my old baffle out the bottom was missing so even if I need to put mine back in it would be useless.

I had a near catastrophic oil problem in the Mustang so I haven't been able to work much on this project. I'm trying to think of the best way of creating a baffle. If I go with a round one it would function better with the stock filter but if I create a rectangular one it would fit both stock and modern filters. I think something shaped like a sardine can but larger would keep down the sharp edges. The rectangular shape would also let me make a larger baffle with a footprint small enough to get through the tank opening.

Time for a SPAM can perhaps? ;)

lol, a little skinnier and smaller than I was thinking but yeah, that general shape.

Kenny you can purchase a bottom for a origional baffle. Early cars did not come with a baffle bottom at all. Your vin seems late to not to have a bottom, but you can purchase one.

But where's the fun in that? One of the fundamental rules of hot rodding is don't buy what you can build. While the D isn't a hot rod, I am an old school hot rodder at heart.

This is what I messed around with for about an hour today. It is still very basic, I used some aluminum flashing to make the template for the bowl. It's obviously too flimsy to use.

I think this is just a tad too wide. I can cut it down later.

I had a better idea on the pickup hose. Instead of just shoving it through the hole I created two tabs and a hose clamp to hold it in place.

Trying to decide how to layout the holes in the sides. They might need to go a little bit higher.

Please ignore that canister filter. That's what I found inside my tank instead of the Delorean style filter.

Why go to all that work? Use the GM baffle/sump without the pump. With a little ingenuity you could fit it with the GM top to the DeLorean tank top. Check out this thread:
