What methods do you fine folks prefer for this?

Don't use a metal blade or razor. Use plastic.
Brake cleaner or acetone help to remove/soften some of the "goo" left from the old ones. (Don't get on rubber hoses & other such materials because it will damage it).
Josh B. might chime in, but when I re-did mine, I cleaned up the block more & used a fine sandpaper to smooth out any small imperfections that I may have caused during cleanup causing my leaks the first time. I believe I use wet paper & sanded with light oil using 1800 grit that I had left over. [This was an additional effort I went through due to my situation....I don't think this is needed normally]

Thanks Justin. Was planning on using a plastic scraper already; don't like the idea of a razor blade on a soft aluminum block.

Locktite sells an aerosol product called "Chisel" and you can buy an adapter and Scotch-Brite pads to fit a drill. You want to leave the surface a little rough so the gaskets don't slip around but you also don't want to scratch or chop the soft aluminum. Try not to use a metal chisel or scraper or wire brush.
