Me too! Thanks dude. In defense of PJ Grady, as that was one of their struts, it was old. I'd say about 4-5 years old, and has been removed and installed countless times in the last few months. I currently have SpecialT's "Soft-Lift" struts in right now. I hear Grady sells the same ones now.

Seeing how this is in the The Picture Zone under open discussion, and the lead-in of the thread title, is this thread going to be a spot to post pictures of surprise stuff thats happened to you? If so, I got a good one from last night... (and no, not THAT)

You got the ones that blow the door open:cool1:

Do your door fly open and bang at the top. Looks like the metal must have had a fracture.

Anybody know what kind of oil and at what pressure those things are loaded with?

Shit. My heart skipped a beat or two when I saw that photo. I remember the jolts I got when the weight of the door collapsed on the rod I had holding it up when I changed out my struts. I can't imagine what your experience would have been like.

Glad you weren't hurt.

To paraphrase Michael Cain: you weren't supposed to blow the bloody doors off!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

HA HA HA!! That's good!! I love it! I've been half heartedly looking for the info on the strut specs. I'd love to know just what PSI my eyeball narrowly avoided... Damn I wish I woulda had a camera for that.

Hervey's new soft-lift struts have a cautionary notice in Newtons. I can't remember the exact number now, but I believe I calculated it to be almost 300 pounds. So if you weren't already thanking your lucky stars....!

Damn! That looks awful!! I can barely see what it is in the picture. The photo was kinda small, but regardless, it still looks horrible!

Holy shit!! I praise the engineers that designed the configuration of those struts. Think about it! They are in the system the exact way they need to be. When the struts are to be removed for replacement, one forces the strut away from ones self. Thus, in the event of catastrophic failure the top will literally blow off and away! Genius.

Yikes, I've seen them collapse but never come apart like that.

I think I'll be ordering a new set soon after seeing that... I have O'grady's in my car as that's what it came with. installed around 2002 from what I could tell from my receipts.

my driver's one doesn't even go all the way up any more...

Two years is a good lifespan for a door strut. After ten, you could likely push it by hand!
