No markings, vendor stickers nothing. Just the one number stamped on it 90013070

That's a 90-amp Delco, AKA the Cadillac cross-reference. It's huge and relatively low output. But 12V is 12V if it fits. . . .

It was the common GM alternator from the mid-60s to the mid-80s

Thanks Dave, explains why it was an absolute bitch to get out compared to the last one I pulled out on another Delorean.

If I wanted to replace it with a different alternator negating as much "fabricating" as possible....which one would you suggest? The ones you guys have? one of the alts listed on the crossover list?

I don't think my lower bracket is original.....but the plug is...I think.

Honestly as long as they didn't cut up the upper cast mount, I'd go with a vendor alternator. (You think I'll recommend another one from Autozone??:histerical1:

You may need to buy the bracket again if they tossed it. It's a 110102 bracket for a whopping $2.97. The other advantage is that you get back to the standard belt, which to a future owner is a Good Thing. That old Delco uses a longer belt. So if you go our route order a new belt too.

That plug you have is not DMC-standard either, but on the current alternator you cut it off and attach the supplied plug. The Dulcy Alternator uses a very odd plug, and the Motorola uses a screw lug. The new one usus a GM-style 4-pin weatherpack but uses only one wire. That old one uses two wires.

The one only attaches to the brown-yellow wire on the harness and the heavy battery wire still goes to a stud.

Here is how the lower mount works. I got lucky - car here with the alternator off. You can see the hex bolt head on the shot from the back.

I just missed you and Julie, Mike answered though. I'll place the order tomorrow morning. I had 2 different brackets to hold up that big alternator. Thanks for posting the pics.

You were right, I traced back the 2 wire plug and it was attached to the brown/yellow wire. When you say heavy duty battery wire......I'm assuming that those are all the brown wires (2 bundles) right?

Yes - the brown wires are the output connection to the starter===>battery.

Does the 140amp alternator require different mounts?

Great job Dave and Julee!:rock_on:

Finally got around to installing it this afternoon, one little issue.

I'm having trouble getting enough tension on the belt. All bolts are loose, then it occurred to me that I might have the new bracket backwards.....it does have a slight bend in it.

So, if I'm at the back of the car looking down at the bracket. Bolted to the block, looking left to right. Does the bracket bend to the front of the car at the alternator or the back?

This is a 140 amp alt.

As you face the alternator, the bracket is between the alternator and you. It can only go on two ways, and one puts the bracket closer to the engine than the other. IIRC the Motorola alternator angles forward for best fit to the engine.

In stock form, I've found a long prybar is your best way to get enough tension.

If you can make everything mate up by just finger tighnening all of the bolts, flipping it will not do any good... Maybe they just put a belt on it that worked ok?

I use a jack to tension my alternator. Just carefully angle it under the alternator and start jacking away.

Dude, that's brilliant. I've always used a breaker bar and a helper and I'm always concerned it's not tight enough

To me it's just common sense. I believe in working smarter and not harder.

Are you handing out t-shirts at DCS 2012?

Tshirts for what?

The Robertson 2012 campaign of course.

Door to door is fairly archaic after all.

No. I'm going to be handing out carburetors.

How about Ramen instead. Folks could put it into their coolant bottles to cook!
