Delorean Artwork... finally done!

Greetings All, glad to see the forum back online!

Last year I was working on a series of Delorean illustrations. That effort languished for a while due to other priorities, but I was finally able to finish up the artwork and get them posted online. Feels nice to get back into doing art again! Cheers!

Thanks, Michael... glad you like! Lately I have spent very little time creating art, and more time managing other designers and writing specs. :( I've had a hankering to get back to my artistic roots, so I created this series.

These were created digitally, using Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop. The website that hosts my gallery handles the printing. They use a high quality archival paper for the art prints. Note that two of the rear view images are also available as laptop skins, which are printed on 3M vinyl.

I've got images of other cars that I'll be posting soon. I've recently found myself with a bit more free time on my hands, so I hope to be creating more soon!

I just added another piece (sorry, not a delorean; a Ford GT). I'm working on a companion piece to the one Domi referenced (http://society6.com/geoffombao/Delorean-Retro-Poster-Blue_Print) which will show the rear of the car. After that, I might do a Dino, a Miura, or another Mini. Gotta mix it up a bit... they can't be all Deloreans.

I've done just lineart work of a Levin photograph once. I should try that with a DeLorean... Those wheels will be the end of me... But this was my end result when it came to the Levin:

Done in 2007... Can't believe it has been that long since I've done something like that. Anyone want their favorite DeLorean picture done in lines? Shoot me a PM with a picture, and the first one will get it (it'll take me some time, but eh, free is free ne?)

Sorry for the highjack... I am just a sucker for drawings like that. I never got into coloring my lines.

Neat drawing! Yes, what you described is, in principal, part of what I do. But it's a multi-step process:

I work from photos of cars that I shoot myself so I can get the dramatic angles that I like. Using "old school" paper & pencil, I create rough sketches of the piece's composition/setting/etc.

Next, I "build" the car in Adobe Illustrator. I take a lot of creative license to make colors, lines, surfaces, angles, etc. more dramatic/evocative. Using the rough sketches, I build the environment in which the car will reside. I then overlay the car onto the background and do further work to both. The resulting Illustrator file can be pretty complex... often ~30 layers, and >20 MB (pretty big for a vector graphics file).

Finally, I import the images into PhotoShop for more work that is not easily done in a vector program.

It's a lot of work tweaking every aspect of a piece, but really enjoyable. Often, I'll make a dozen or more variations of the same piece before selecting a "final". EX: The attached images are variations that I dropped in favor pieces that are in my gallery now.

Looking at my gallery, it's pretty skewed towards D's and Mini's. Clearly, I'm pretty passionate about these cars, but I think I'm gonna move on to another make for a bit... these cars are really fun subject matter, but I don't want to burn out on them.

All that stuff looks really good. I can do that stuff, too, although ever since my computer was upgraded, I've been doing my projects in my old Fireworks now and I don't have my CS2 installed again yet. Fireworks works almost the same though, so I am happy for that.

I am gonna have to get back to my DeLorean "Cars" projects when I can. Everything else has had my mind boggling, mostly rl stuff and making videos. :dork:

Thanks. Seems to be good quality; it's fairly thick, and has an adhesive on the back (not static clink, like the films you put on the front of the phone.

Thanks for the kind words… I'm very glad you like my new work! I enjoy working in this "sketchy" style. I haven't had a lot of free time lately, but hope to further explore it in the coming months. I tried putting this piece on apparel, but I wasn't satisfied with the look; especially on the hoodie, because the zipper bisects the image. Just now I made it available as a laptop skin, and I think it turned out pretty nice.

I purposely made the graphics small on my tees. I thought some looked nice when sized up, but Society6 only allows one version of the artwork per tee, so I chose the small size. Also, they don't offer printing on the backs of tees/hoodies.

Let me know if you think a particular design would look good "loud and proud" on a tee. Perhaps I'll offer one or two up in that style in the future.

Thanks. Just googled Tron Uprising... graphics look very cool! (One of my favorite artists is Syd Mead, who worked on the first Tron, among many other things.) Never been to SD Comicon... would like to when my schedule permits, but I doubt I'd have time to set up a booth, unfortunately (I'd need to have a larger body of work, which takes a lot of time).

Geoff, I love your work, my wife is still using her iPhone case and getting compliments on it everyday. She works at a aircraft simulation manufacturer and all the engineers run up to her like giddy school girls to ask her if she knows what type of car is on her case.

Anyways, I like the artwork, but for me it's too dark. Not a fan of the purple hues in general, but that is my taste. Like I said the artwork itself is very good. Hope you keep at it.

Lol. I'm gonna try to productize this one in the next few days, but will pass on Mordor-fying it. LOTR was an epic trilogy, but my affinity to it isn't super strong.

Glad your Mrs. is still enjoying her iPhone case. I use to get lots of attention when I had one of my skins on my iPhone. Unfortunately, it was ruined last year while on vacation. (While visiting the Ferrari factory, "security stickers" were put on all cel phone cameras; the adhesive was really strong, an ruined the skin.) Haven't gotten around to getting a new one. My new direction is definitely more dark/brooding; I knew it would have more limited appeal, but wanted to explore it anyway.

This will likely be the last new piece for a long while. I was recently accepted to Art Center College of Design's transportation design program. (For car design geeks, alumni include: Chip Foose, Henrik Fisker, Chris Bangle, Syd Mead.) I'm excited about starting the program (in three days!), but know that it will leave me with no time to do my personal artwork. Hopefully before too long I'll move from doing fine art pieces to designing entire cars!

Howdy... thanks for your feedback! Society6.com has templates for the products, which don't allow for the art placement that you described. :-( But they introduce new products every so often, so perhaps in the future this will be possible. I'll be sure to post here if it happens.

Howdy Folks!

Well, all good things must come to a close, and I have decided to end my presence on society6. I've already deleted most of my artwork from the site, but will keep a few pieces up for a few more days, just in case anyone wants to order something.

In the near future I'll be opening up a store on my own site, geoffombao.com, and will be sure to post when it goes live.
