View Full Version : Cup Holder Options?

DeloreanJoshQ

I know this subject was beat to death in DMCTalk's previous life but what are the best options and locations for our cars?

Would any of you please share the type, where to get it, and pictures of the install?

I was also trying to find a spot to make it integrate with the stock console but haven't found a good spot yet...

Thanks!

Im still trying to find out who did the holder in the coin tray area from the old talk .com it did not come from DMCCA cause they thought it was pretty cool too

Proto where are you at with your "prototype" holder?

I picked up a couple of these. I inserted the very flexible metal strips under the center console plate around the shifter. No drill holes or adhesive residue.

So far so good!

Bill offered, but I felt that he had done enough for me already, and declined to take it. If we're all ever in NC, we can get some Cheerwine Floats from that fast food place...

This holds two 500ml coke bottles fine which is the standard size in Ireland. Its made from polished 304SS (1.5mm) and held on with velcro if I need to get to the coin tray.

Below is an idea of what I have in mind that would go into the passenger kneepad close to the center console. However, the coin tray isn't necessary.
I like the idea that it pops out when needed and also should match with the rest of the interior with the black trim.
To pull it off I would have to find a way to attach it firmly to the back of the kneepad....
I realize alot of people would not do this option, but if I think it could pass as a stock option I will try it...my wife and I are tired of spilling drinks!

Here's what I've got. Originally from Dave and Julee in about 2007 or 2008. I think at the time you could have got them from www.drinkholders.com but I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist anymore. Not sure where you'd find them now.

They work pretty well and more or less are out of the way, yet right where you need them when you go to reach for your drink (as I think the coin tray ideas are difficult to always be reaching backwards). They are a bit in the way for the knee of the passenger... but hey, so what, I don't sit in that seat ;)

I'm happy with them and the only thing that would make me less than 100% happy with them is that they don't seem to grab on to the bracket underneath the console cover plate very well and are noticeably loose. I've never had it dump over, but I woudn't want to test that theory too much.

My RX-7 convertible has the same holder as MartyP has screwed into the driver's side door panel- it has worked quite well and will even (though it's pushing it...) hold a Sonic Route-44 cup.

I have a plastic cup holder/coin tray with two cup spots (cup-coin-cup) that wedges between the passenger seat and the center console. Isn't very useful when I have a passenger in the car, but when I'm driving it by myself (most of the time at the moment) it works pretty well. I think I got it at Big Lots for like $5- it's pretty similar to this from Autozone (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/TSI-Products-Wedgie-cup-holder/_/N-25cz?counter=3&filterByKeyWord=cup+holder&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=363863_0_0_).

Hahaha, I laughed because I use the same thing and feel the same way. I hardly ever drink anything in my DeLorean with the thought of spilling things inside my car. If I ever do, I buy a screw cap type drink so I don't spill. But if I can't avoid that, I do use the wedge type 2 cup holder unit on the link and I love it. It also fits in the storage compartment when I don't use it.

Ummmm, errrrr, ahhhh, welll.

I've got a great prototype. Will mount same as original tray (just two screws), removable cup inserts (easy cleanup for spills) etc. etc. But right now, the prototype is smooth. I wanted to be able to cast it with the vinyl grain so that all it would need is to be dyed black or grey and would match the console. Haven't found a good way to get the grain on it though. Casting it smooth, then wrapping it in vinyl would be a pain so I haven't cast the mold. Open to suggestions.

The easiest and cheapest way to make cup holders in the D is to use the stock cup holders that came with the car - that everyone has.

The space between the seat back and the pontoon near where the seat belt bolts to. It easily holds one or two 20oz screw on cap bottles. It can also hold the drive thru cups as long as you don't get the "super suck" size. Normal aluminum cans fit as well but are not tight so they may spill.

As a European who lived in the US for 2 years... I think this is very funny. Only Americans worry about something to put in something to drink in their car while driving:thumbup:. Do not get me wrong I admire the way Americans think and how practical they are. I took the habbit with me and I also drink my morning coffee in the car daily while driving to work here in Belgium.
I seldom drink in my Delorean. Only when the trip exceeds an hour one way. But I bought a cup holder at Pep boys last year while in the US for my work. It jams under the glove box lid and works fine.

But this thread was a hit on the old forum and now it is again... funny!!
Honestly... If something neat comes up, I'm interested!

I know. I'm slow. (For such a small mold, it's actually been quite a pain in the butt.) May not be saying much, but I do think I'm still on track for delivering faster than DMCH's stuff though.:woot: ...and I'm not sittin' on anybody's deposit money.

Once I pull the first one, I will be looking for someone local with a (stock interior) D to do a test fit and make some final bracket measurements. (Bernie M. used to be my go-to guy for this step, but sadly he's no longer around.)

DeloreanJoshQ
04-09-2012, 07:31 AM
Alright, so here is what I came up with using the above retractable cupholder I bought on ebay. I did not cut up the passenger kneepad; I couldn't find a shallow enough cup holder assembly that would clear the glove box tub anyway. This one fits directly under the passenger kneepad. I took some metal strapping and made a bracket with it, integrated it into the cupholder assembly and bolted it underneath the kneepad.
Result: It works great!! Wife loves it (should help her joining me in events and trips), it clears legs with no problem, is reachable by the driver, and it so far has held every size drink I have tested with no problems; still holds tight. This was the closest I could find that would blend in with the rest of the interior and be out of sight when not in use.....
Let me know what you think.

I like the way the tube redundantly routes to both cup holders to give double the capacity - but the flaw is if you only have one drink there's no inbuilt counter balance so would cause neck pain. Less of a hazard for the passenger though - perhaps they could wear it and the hose extend over to the driver?

Then again how many DeLoreans go out in the rain - perhaps the washer fluid could be replaced and rerouted, thus delivered on tap and under pressure.

Oh. My. God. The washer tube is briefly inside the cabin. Imagine the possibilities. Reroute some a/c lines so the bottle is chilled and....

Just thought I'd bump this thread with my own cupholder solution. When you have a ridiculously loud exhaust, either you love the tune of it, or you change it until you do. There is no in between, nor is there any use for a radio. So I was googling around to see if I could find a DIN replacement for the radio that would function as a sort of drawer. In that search, I came across one that is a drawer on top and a cupholder on the bottom. Naturally I went with this option, and I just finished installing it yesterday.

Here it is with the cupholder out:
http://vin559.com/images/work_done/cupholder/resized/cupholder01_640.jpg
("Free Box" is the drawer)

With drinks in it:
http://vin559.com/images/work_done/cupholder/resized/cupholder02_640.jpg

How it looks from behind the passenger door (not that bad actually)
http://vin559.com/images/work_done/cupholder/resized/cupholder04_640.jpg

And in case you're wondering what that color cable is in the passenger footwell, it's a Craig radio cable extension I got from videobob, with masking tape denoting what wire does what. Considering how long it is, I could probably engineer something to have the radio in the glovebox that pops out when opened (think: plutonium gauge in BTTF), but I doubt I'll ever use it. At least it's an option though! :)

Side note: the unit I got is supposed to screw in, however the DMCH DIN faceplate has no screws, and instead is supposed to be used with those stereos that slide in. Thankfully I had leftover pieces from my HD Radio install in my daily driver which did screw in, so I took the bracket from that radio, drilled a couple holes in it, then screwed the cupholder directly to it. Then I took the outer trim (another leftover part) and put that on there. I had to drill a couple 1/2" holes in the DMCH DIN faceplate to access the screws, but it's extremely secure as it is now. I forgot to take pictures of that process unfortunately.

It's definitely a usable setup but I doubt you're going to convince many people to pick cup holders over their radio. Do you never use a radio? Just curious because you said you had HD radio in your daily driver. I know I listen to music whenever I drive no matter what vehicle it is.

It's definitely a usable setup but I doubt you're going to convince many people to pick cup holders over their radio. When 1Batt4U finishes his double-din radio faceplate, you can get the best of both worlds. Until then, I wholeheartedly agree. I figured since it's a solution no one posted yet that I would post it.

Do you never use a radio? Just curious because you said you had HD radio in your daily driver. I know I listen to music whenever I drive no matter what vehicle it is.It's the damndest thing, in my daily driver, I crank the radio up every time I drive it and love listening to it. In my DeLorean, I've never listened to it and love driving without it. Yet when I went without the radio in my daily driver, I couldn't stand it. I'm not sure if the difference is the fact that it's a DeLorean, or that I wouldn't be able to hear the radio anyways, or what it is. I still can't figure it out :dunno:

You're not alone - I religiously listen to the radio (or my kids CDs/DVDs) driving my V8, but in my DeLorean I enjoy just driving and listening to the car.

Only exception was when I drove from Adelaide to Sydney and back - I put music on from time to time, but would turn it off after a while to listen to the DeLorean again.

Hard to explain... I guess I'm driving the D to specifically drive and enjoy the D, so don't need music?

Yeah... I was just thinking about that today. When I drive my truck I almost always listen to the radio or iPod but when I'm in the DeLorean I almost never have a radio on.

Weird.

Black one matches well with my interior. It holds Starbucks coffee to big gulp cup. When I don't need it, just throw it behind back seat.

I tried the IKEA cupholder hack the other day.

I found out what you meant, Steven, by describing the lip not fitting over the centre console. I got my heat gun out and eased that lip out a little bit. Not a lot, but enough to get it to at least point straight instead of angled in slightly, which is where they start.

When I went out to put it into the car, I found maybe it still wouldn't go, and then I looked closer at someone's picture of where they installed it and figured out where it was going to work on my car.

The angled lip on the inside edge of the console shift plate area is the problem. If you slide it back enough to be about even with the switches, that area is more straight and it tends to fit ok. Not too far back to where it meets up with the beginning of the elbow portion of the console, but just before that.

You'll see how that works once you try it. Picture here:

I picked up a mini-console like this one (http://www.amazon.com/Hopkins-EMIC-BLA-Go-Gear-Console/dp/B000FGLQCK?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0) at my local Walmart (can't find it on their website, however). It fits perfectly between the seats and in the slightly recessed area that the tray is in (so does not move). I don't have any CDs and just use that storage area for other stuff. Definitely holds more than the little tray (plus the tray is still accessible, if needed)

Anyone using the IKEA cupholders feel like they are a little too wide and let a slim bottle or can or coffee cup move around too freely? I put a coffee cup in mine and it's too wide to grab the sides of the cup. If I were to need to brake quickly or make a quick turn, it wouldn't stay still very well. It wouldn't dump right over, but it would slop out the opening depending on how full it was at the time. Anyone come up with something to fix that?

Yep, lol. Completely agree with you. And the part about whoever comes up with an optimal solution could make a lot of money!!

I saw this cupholder gadget for sale that's meant for your bicycle handle bars. Now, who goes on a bike ride with a pop or coffee on their handle bars vs a water bottle in a bracket on the frame I don't know.

The opening is the perfect size for a medium coffee cup from the main coffee chain in this area. The catch is, it attaches on to a "bar" that would be going horizontal.

I'm trying to MacGuyver a solution to give me that bar and of late I was trying to find a combination of fittings or mounts from dashcams or home speakers or the like that would work. I don't want to drill into anything and make it permanent, but I don't want to wear the coffee if it slips and spills from using a clip or suction cup that stopped holding on tight.

This is it here: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/everyday-traveler-bike-cupholder-0730028p.html#srp

I still like the one I found at Walmart that fits perfectly on console between the seats (in the recessed area where the tray is-so it will not move). It holds all sizes of cups and travel mugs quite securely and requires no modifications and is easily removable. (https://www.amazon.com/Hopkins-EMIC-BLA-Go-Gear-Console/dp/B000FGLQCK?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0). The picture make it look much bigger than it really is.

Josh,

Not quite sure what you mean by "best options and locations"? You have done some great upgrade already to your car!

We have a lot of upgrades planned for the "Dream DeLorean". One I really like is the center console storage tray. The arm rest is hinged and you can open in to store stuff underneath.
You have to cut the cardboard out of the area of the console and attach hinge to the arm rest and the console. Then find a shallow plastic storage tray that fits in the hole you cut out.
The tray rests on the frame.

As for cub holders, which the D really needs today, this gets much more complicated. Here is what we have planned.

Remove the "key tray" at the end of the console. Widen the area. Custom 3D print 2 cup holders to fit down into this space and rest on the frame. Finish with black wrinkle paint (which really works well) to match grain in the car.

Window switches? Ryan and I like the brushed SS ones that illumination.

Of course, we have a lot of other technical upgrades planned. (e.g. K. Krimm's dashboard - bar screen-Great work K.K!)

Construction was supposed to start this month, but remodeling of parts of the LR for this years Chicago Midwest Delorean Picnic (August 19th) has taken precedence- since we plan
on a number of video presentations. (Already had this capability for the DeLorean Weekend in Las Vegas.) Work in the Dream Delorean is Now it is planned to start in April.

I don't drink coffee which might enable my behavior.Piqued my interest on that bit, can you clarify what you meant? I don't drink coffee either, just kinda threw me and don't want to assume anything.

I like your idea though, wonder if I can find a properly sized insulated bag with ice for it. The last parade I was in, the water was literally undrinkable from sitting in the sun and having about 120 F water to drink. Burn yourself to quench your thirst, or stay thirsty, only two options. (But again, my cupholder is where the radio used to be, and I was also dumb enough to leave the bottles in the car overnight, so by the time mid-day hit they were already burning up). That solves a lot for me

Coffee is generally served in a non-sealable container so you can't just close it and toss it wherever. In the BMWs I would use the door pocket or the crevice where the hand brake is. Not viable options in the DMC, though.

Move the window switches to the doors (the stock wiring is sufficient to do this). Then put a cup holders where the switches used to be.

That is how the Iron Man Delorean is being built.

I bought the cup holder from amazon and cut off the bottom. The cup holder had sharp edges that dug into the center console, so it was no good. The cup holder and fire extinguisher bracket are screwed to a piece of plywood. The wood is sprayed with some truck bed liner to get some texture.

I generally only needed one cup holder. I don’t like the ones that you reach to reach back for, or that flip out etc. I donated the ashtray fitting. Got a thick plate of aluminum and fitted to the opening. Drilled a 3 inch hole and then bought the perfect poker table SS drop in cup holder off a poker website. Sanded it to a brushed finish. It holds a can or medium sized drinks. Enjoy

Very elegant. Hey, DeloreanGo, are you reading this?

It is funny how society has progressed. As a kid of the 70s and 80s it seemed designers made sure each passenger had access to a damn ashtray.

I've designed a fully modular, interchangable cupholder system that allows for 2 "coke" can sizes, a big gulp size, iphone holder, and generalized storage that all uses factory mounting and looks perfectly in the design conceit of the original car.

I'm hoping that DMC lets me know if they want to go with it or no, otherwise I'll show you all the setup soonish.

It doesn't interfere with shifting or anything aesthetically and matches pretty darn flawlessly.

Only thing that kinda kicks is the price... $82.99 USD seems kinda steep.

The screws are in the coin tray. On my car they’re not even hidden, they’re just sitting there near the front edge. As for dimensions it should be easy enough to figure out if you have a can of coke handy.

jamesrguk
12-21-2019, 04:02 PM
That was the largest size I could really fit in the space, this fits with zero modification to the car, you can even use your original screws if you like.

I'm biased of course as I designed/make them, but a few folks have now started fitting them and posting pics/comments on various DeLorean Facebook groups so Im sure they'll be plenty of unbiased reviews.

Pic of grey version I did, personally I prefer the black/grey contrast.

This really is for cans and small drinks, it was either two regular cans/regular cup of take away coffee or one large hole for a large drink to fit within the confines of the original space.

I have had mine in for a few weeks and the holes are plenty deep enough (you can probably work it out from the photo of the can) for nothing to fall.

Colour wise...
The grey interiors are a nuisance to match, especially after 40 years of fading etc... the one in my photo is of my car when I was testing some colours, my cars all leather so not OEM anyway and although it was a good match, I have subsequently swapped if for a black one as I prefer the look (all personal taste of course).

I've always thought if you can't get a 100% match its probably smarter to go for contrast.

Thanks for the questions

Approx 2 3/4 inches wide. A soda can fits in with a little room to spare, as does a 20 ounce soda bottle. When I’m not using the cup holders I have a small DMC bag that I place over them. This not only holds phone chargers, EZPass, garage door opener, etc, but also hides the cup holders.

So after viewing the other cup holder thread, I decided to try my own hand. I really liked the ones that fit in the original pocket between the seats. The only issue I saw was you can't reach back there easy. Also, I'm not sure if a "Yeti" cup will fit. (A must design criteria for my wife and I)

First thing to do was get out the "CAD" (cardboard aided design)

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164265/fullsize/dscn2299.jpg

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164266/fullsize/dscn2298.jpg

Next, transfer it into aluminum.

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164299/fullsize/dscn2310.jpg

Put a bend in it. Actually did this multiple times to get the right bend.

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164300/fullsize/dscn2311.jpg

It is held on by the two screws that hold the pocket. The problem was my screws were junky sheet metal screws that wouldn't hold something like this. So I put a couple nutzerts and 12-24 screws. Scotch brited the surface and Walla!

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164301/fullsize/dscn2314.jpg

Yeti cup installed. It might appear to interfear with your arm, but it doesn't. The small amount that it moved the cups forward helps a lot in comfort.

https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1164302/fullsize/dscn2315.jpg

Finally figured out how to post pics from my Supermoters account.

I just sat in the car and ran through the gears. It's not a problem. I find it's uncomfortable to have my elbow on top of the console. I'm 5'10" and with the seat at a nice location, my arm is going diagonal to the shifter. My shoulder is next to the cup holder, not over it. I guess a taller guy might have a problem.

We either have different driving styles or my seats are the issue. I am same height as you and my arm has always rested atop of the center area and was not uncomfortable. My seat bottoms ripped out and I had them fixed. Fixed a little too good I think as my head is using more of the headliner space and I am sitting higher than in the past.

I just got done driving it around my yard. I could only get to second, but didn't notice any problem. Maybe if I was playing Ricky Racer, I would keep my arm up there. I will say my seats seem kind of low. The leather is in great shape, but maybe the springs/padding is wore out and has me sitting kind of low. That's why my arm is kind of uncomfortable on the console. (Lots of headroom) The guy I bought it from had thick sheepskin covers. Haven't tried them yet.

If I find I want my seat higher and then my arm is wrong, I think I could make another cup holder that could flip front or back. Then if I was getting aggressive, I could flip it back and more out of the way. I don't really see me driving this car aggressively because I have a new Vette that really is ridicules fast. (If I want that) I'm more of a cruiser in my old age.

So back to the CAD. (Cardboard aided design)

Transfer to aluminum. Out with the old, in with the new.

66269

This new design allows me to rest my arm on the center for those cruise through town when your not sure if your going to upshift or downshift.

You also might notice it's shaped like a point in the front. That adds to the speed.

I have an auto and definitely looking for a solution. Are you saying the cup holder with the 2 holes front to back is not conducive to a manual because of your arm hitting it as you're shifting? It seems the cup holders being next to each other in the earlier pictures is the best all around.

No, the holes front to back is good for a standard shift. The holes left and right would be better for a auto. If you look at Deloreango site, they have a left/right holder that looks great, but the cups are so far back it's tough to reach. Both of my designs are easier to get at, but the left/right is slightly in the way for shifting.

If you would like to try the left/right, it's yours. The only thing you might need to do is install nutzerts where your screws go. I had to because the screws were kind of weak to hold it. I went to 10-32 size screws.

Greetings! I splurged and went with the DeLorean dual cupholder and smartphone holder. PROS: Great Quality 3-D printed. Easy to install! Looks great! Replaces stock catch-all tray. CONS: Cost $96. Inconvenient Location in car (not a great place to store a phone or a drink).

Overall, would make the purchase again. I use it every time I drive, have learned how to properly reach for my drink, and use the smartphone holder to hold the remote for my homemade flux capacitor.

I guess I should update this thread also. If any of you guys are thinking of copying my cup holders from above, after driving a few hundred miles, I do not recommend that design for a standard shift car. (I think it's still fine for an auto) I changed mine to a new style that I like much better for shifting. It is centered on the rest, but could be made offset if you even wanted more room for your arm. (At the expense of the pax.) It is real easy to reach the front cup holder. (I would say that is reserved for the driver) The ashtray still opens, but I don't care about that. I might even cover it.
