I hear the show referenced on Big Bang Theory all the time but have never watched an episode.

He's the latest doctor, though why he's in the pass seAt of a Delorean with his foot on the dash, i couldn't tell you.
The girl is getting in the way of a really nice car shot.
By "latest doctor, I mean he's the latest actor to play him. This is number 10 iirc, no Tom Baker, but what are you going to do.

I watched it in the 70s with its terrible special effects and alien costumes
I started again with my kids with the last doctor (9) David Tennant and really enjoyed it.

If I did my math correct, it would take me
- 17,350 minutes to complete Season 1-26
- 89 minutes to complete the 1996 TV Movie
- 4095 minutes to catch up with the new Season 1-7
- 300 minutes to complete the 2008-2010 specials
So essentially 15 days, 8 hours, 54 minutes (not including the time it took me to do all this math)
That is a hell of a lot of catching up to do! I'm not even through the third season of Star Trek yet let alone a show that will take me over 15 days straight of watching T.V. just to catch up. :)

Yup, big fan here as well. Been watching it since '78, effects were cheezy then but it was the good sci-fi stories and characters that drew me in.
Anyway, here is another related picture with a DeLorean. This is the actress that plays as the latest "companion" (person who travels with the Doctor).

Yup, actor Tom Baker to my wife and I was the first one we saw in the lead character, and remains the epitome, of Doctor Who.
This new kid Matt Smith is closely becoming my second favorite incarnation of the Doctor.

I liked RTD well enough as a showrunner, but I found the more grand productions (Series 4 finale, The End of Time) to end sort of haphazardly.
Oddly enough, SM always wrote the most thrilling, complete stories in each series since DW was revived IMO. He is a fantastic writer, but a lot of people out there think he's devoting more of his creative efforts to Sherlock. Problem is, who would be a better showrunner right now? I can't see them moving backwards (and RTD moved to the US along with Julie Gardner, so that would be difficult) My biggest fear is Whovians would wind up with another Jonathan Nathan-Turner (producer from 1980-89; he wanted to work on other things, but the BBC brass insisted he stay if he were to remain a staff producer year after year. That couldn't have built up a bit of resentment, could it?)
But what do I know, I still wish Christopher Eccleston stayed as Nine for at least one more series.
DMCVegas
08-27-2012, 11:52 AM
True. Of course as well when RTD was writing there was also the excitement of old characters being reintroduced. The story arcs I also loved because it brought you into the show even further by ensuring that you watched previous episodes in order to better comprehend and appreciate the newer ones (Bad Wolf comes to mind as an example). Granted every Doctor is going to be different as the interpretation of the actor and writers will define that particular incarnation. I suppose that my biggest thing so far has been that with versions played by Eccelston and Tennant, they just seemed to be allot more hands-on if you will. Smith seems more passive and not quite as mischievous.
And yes, Eccelston was removed WAY to soon. As full of wonder as he was, he still had that darkness about him that came busting through when he encountered the Daleks again. That to me really portrayed how I felt someone who lost everyone they new, and consistantly traveled to escape the pain would be.

I believe that is Mark Levy's car, 1860, with Matt Smith in the New York premiere shots from this weekend. Here is a pick of his co-star, Arthur Darvill, who plays the character of Rory, posing with me & my car, 1150, taken at the Hurricane Who Doctor Who convention in Orlando last November.

Arthur told us that Back To The Future was his favorite film, so a ride simply HAD to be arranged! He was so thrilled that he made one of the shots with the car his profile pic on his Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Arthur-Darvill/140638729280233 ) and bragged about the experience to Mat & Karen back home on the set, so I guess they both had a bit of "Delorean envy" until now, LOL. I've promised Arthur that when & if he officially accepts my invitation to come back to Florida and be a guest on my upcoming Doctor Who celebrity/fan vacation cruise ( http://www.scificruise.com ) next year, I'll let him actually drive the car a bit ;-)

Even if he is unfamiliar to (overseas) fans, many have likely already seen him. He is another in a long line of actors who had a small role somewhere in the Whoniverse before taking on a larger role:
He was Caecilius in the Series 4 episode "The Fires of Pompeii"
21001
He also played ill fated civil servant John Frobisher in Doctor Who spinoff "Torchwood: Children of Earth"
21000
I liked Matt Smith, but am looking forward to seeing an 'older' Doctor again. At 55, Peter Capaldi is the same age William Hartnell was when he took on the role of the First Doctor.

Yeah, I admit that I was looking forward to hear the news of the new actor.
Like most television, Dr Who is very dependent on the principle actor and the writing, to name a bare few. To me these last few years the writing ranged from just, awful to not that bad, but I thought Matt Smith overall was pretty good in the role. Matt's Doctor kind of reminded me of my all time favorite Dr. Who actor, Tom Baker (his earlier episodes).
Other than seeing Peter Capaldi in the show itself in the past, as a minor character, I know very little about his work, so it will be very interesting to see how he pulls of an older Doctor. Hopefully he'll get a few well written episodes to showcase what he can do.

I've seen everything from Hartnell to the beginning of Smith. Tennant's last season was when I started getting tired of the haphazard, up-and-down writing, wibbly-wobbly, deus ex machina, Doctor Who as Harry Potter with the Sonic Screwdriver as Magic Wand. I kept watching because I knew Matt Smith was on the way, but I quickly tired of the once-a-week catchphrase, Murray Gold Or Substitute's predictably OTT soundtrack trying to wring emotion out of stiff acting and bad scripts a la Williams/Lucas. And speaking of the scripts: the dialogue is crap -- the BBC used to have script editors with humor and style. Do they even have script editors anymore? It doesn't seem like it. NuWho's dialogue has become as flatly-written and dependent upon quick cuts and whiz-bangery as most recent American television dramedy. I rejoiced when Moffat took over from Davies, because he had penned some of my favorite episodes from previous seasons, but my hopes were too high. Character consistency vanished in favor of "ooh, aah" plot twists which, though popular, rarely work ("Lost," anyone?).
In my opinion, Matt Smith was given little material to work with. I'm sure he's a fine actor, but there's only so much you can do when your character is basically designed to repeat something a child can say on the playground and sell merchandise ("I wear ____ now. ____ are cool.").
I'm not saying that the "classic" series was brilliant, but I expect better from a show with more time, staff, and money than the original series had.
Besides, there are plenty of other DVDs in my collection which qualify me as an Anglophile. ;)

See, here's the problem... you're thinking about this :) Stop that! Right now.
In all seriousness I see exactly what you do in the above. I guess (rather, I know) that I just choose to accept the show as it is at any given time. All that matters to me is that it's fun. The character of the Doctor has evolved so many times through so many actors, and the show/scripts/sets/etc have evolved through many decades that I just go with whatever they present me and try to enjoy it at face value. But yes, I'm looking forward to seeing what an older actor will bring to what the show has become. I nearly choked on my coffee when I read that Rupert Grint was on the "speculation" list.

Fair enough! I do think something Moffat said during the interviews on the big reveal special gave some hope - that he was so fascinated with Matt Smith's "elasticity" that they just sort of let that characteristic drive a lot of the stories (or something to that effect). So the comedy got physical, and a little goofier and less cerebral than it had previously been. So maybe that means that Capaldi will bring some of the dry humor and dignity back to the part? We'll have to see.
Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy Matt Smith, mind you. He was no David Tennant but still enjoyable.

Must admit that while I loved Moffat's individual episodes during the Tennant era, I too have not enjoyed his full-time gig. Every storyline has been so insanely over-the-top complex that even as a sci-fi nut I've lost track of what the hell is going on a times.
While eagerly awaiting each episode previously, I instead found I simply 'watched' the show over the past couple of years - often falling behind by a few episodes because I don't put watching it high on my priority list. Indeed I've still got two unwatched episodes right now that would be a couple months old now?
At least they brought back the creak to the TARDIS door, it wasn't right when they (again over the top) almost completely destroyed the TARDIS and the brand new rebuilt one had a silent door...

Now this I can agree with. I had to do some serious brain-racking to track the story arc. Sometimes I'd even have to check the episode guides to be sure I hadn't missed one somehow, since I was having trouble following the arc.
But to me that applies more to the overall season than the individual episodes, which were pretty good more often than not.

Use the Sonic Screwdriver to remotely pop the doors on your DeLorean. Bonus geek points if it is a time machine replica.

I know your friend- I'm part of the R2 Builders group as well and putting a Sonic in his R2 was clever.
I like the idea of using a Sonic for the remote door opener. You can buy a programmable remote Sonic in either the 10th or 11th Doctor version for $99. But it's infrared as far as I know vs. RF, but worth a try and if it doesn't work you have a nice all metal Sonic vs. the plastic version..

Cool, I didn't know any of the R2 builders were on this forum. I've helped him a little with his replica and I'm impressed with the stuff that gets done with those. I'm not into star wars or I'd be tempted to build one myself. I'm keeping things simple with a Space Core from Portal 2 in puppet form.
I've seen those remotes on Thinkgeek. It's really tempting to try but it'd be one expensive project. I'd have to go with the full function wings-a-loft that can do windows and start the car. Maybe after my restoration is complete I can tinker with the toys. In the meanwhile I'll keep an eye out for broken sonic screw driver remotes on Ebay.
It's true that the Wings-A-Loft system is RF and those TV remotes are IR. You could just use the sonic screwdriver plastic shell and put some RF remote guts in there.

Once I get R2 upgraded to 2-3-2, my next project will be a BTTF D hopefully using the kit from Grady. Or keep adding more cool things to R2 and just get a D to restore...

Mark was showing me the 2-3-2 droids. He said he'd never do it since he has enough trouble controlling a 3 footed droid. I've seen the damage he did by smashing into his coffee table. I'd be afraid of faceplanting something that expensive. I can tell he wants to convert my DeLorean into a Time Machine. Never going to happen.
I bought a plastic replica screwdriver just to see how it might work (and not just to wave it around all wibbly-wobbly like). If I was going to do this I'd have to go all out with a nicer case like the remote version. The plastic ones are ok but they're still toys.

Face plants aren't as bad as one would think.. Happened a lot during filming all the prequels as well as the originals. First day out with mine in front of an audience of 800 live plus another few hundred watching online, R2 took hit a small door that covers audio jacks in a stage floor at the end of an otherwise perfect first presentation (at the Rock Church in San Diego). The lights had gone out to show a video so R2 and the pastor who,was talking were coming backstage, and I didn't see the plate. R2 did a nice slow motion face-plant about 10 feet away from me, dome came off and rolled about 3 feet, batteries spewed out of the dome. We picked him up,quickly, got the batteries and put them back in the dome, and he was pretty oaky, aside form small scuffs, which just ad to the weathering. No dents, nothing broke, and we did 4 more services that day plus endless photos in the lobby between services.
I've had him in small crowds, people placing their babies in front of him for family photos, and my biggest gig was a thing for Disney- operating him isn't all that hard really. The only thing that happened there was he was going a bit fast on the last day and almost took out a big center piece, but bounced off with no damage to him or it, before the crowds came for the show. Typical R2 behavior...
So doing 2-3-2 is more an engineering challenge than a control challenge. But it would be very nice to have.
