Why did you have it removed, detailed, and reinstalled. You just got the build car in 2008. Just wanted it to be shiny again? :hihi2:

Posted this in the "What did you do to your DeLorean Today" thread, but the project was engine bay related, so I'll repost these pictures here too. I installed a second engine bay light and did some other general cleaning. I repainted the ballast resistor mounting plate and re-wraped most of the exposed wire in the engine compartment with silicone tape. I really dislike electrical tape because it leaves the wires a sticky mess.

Okay, this might sound really stupid to you all, but how do you end up cleaning these engines so well? Do you have to take it all apart and clean it or do you clean it all together? I know you'd have to dismantle it to paint it, but to just clean it too? I'm just curious.

Yeah, when you do the VOD rebuild it's a great time to detail everything.

The more you take off, the easier it is, and more access is available, to clean and detail.

VOD work provides a good chance to address the intake, valve covers, A/C pulleys, and with some limited access the timing cover. Removing the exhaust gives all sorts of access to the sides of the block and full access to the timing cover.

Yes, Ozzie did a very fine job on his motor. In fact, I have to give him credit because it was his VOD forum post on the old site that I followed to a "T" and performed on my engine a couple of months ago. It was so well written that it made that whole "seemingly overwhelming" job very manageable. Thanks again Ozzie for taking the time to document your VOD and post for the rest of us.

BTW: My favorite part of the VOD...finding a brand new, no core needed, manufacture closeout, new re-maned water pump from RockAuto for $31 shipped!! I do all I can to support our vendors but that deal my friends, I could not pass up!!:cool1:

Wow! Some real interesting and well executed swaps (tc conner, tommyrich) that I've never seen before. I'd think there would be a lot interest here if you guys posted separate threads with pictures and details of what went into that work.

Jeffu, thanks so much for that note. Today was a bleak day and your post cheered me up. My old VOD thread was really cool, because a lot of folks here generously chimed in with quick answers and very useful advice along the way, which as you say became a great reference for someone else to do such work. I do hope that someday all that thread and all the other wealth of data that was on the old site, were to be available to us again.

I lost all my pictures in a computer crash of that VOD work, I only have this on it which was how the original thread concluded:

Ozzie, glad I brightened your day a bit. Like you, I also hope that someday that thread of yours will be brought back from the "cyberspace abyss" for others to reference and educate themselves on. It was a remarkable thread. I really did feel your pain when you were dealing with your broken bolt issue...lol. I was fortunate not to encounter a single broken bolt! I truly mean it when I say thank you for your work because that was my life line. Cover closed, looking straight down and from the rear. Still need to do some fiberglass body clean up and I want to do the valve and timing belt covers. I may buff the manifold adapter to a high polish and replace the black plastic air intake hose with a rigid metal one, but I'm not sure. You can also see the 2 poles that keep the cover open; aluminum rod with keychain rings attached to the feet on the underside of the rear of the engine cover. They simply lie in the fiberglass channel when the cover is down. Still trying to find the right hardware to spring load them, but in no rush. Note the chopped louvers ride up on stainless rails mounted on the plexi cover so that I don't scratch anything. Blue "rope" is actually LED lighting around the perimeter of the plexiglass to bathe the engine compartment with indirect light. Controlled by toggle switch mounted in one of the dummies in the armrest. Looks nice at night.

www.dealextreme.com

I have found it very difficult to properly photograph blue LED lighting. Here are two pictures, one with the garage lights on so that I could align the tripod and get everything ready, the second with lights off, the camera on auto exposure and flash turned off. Even then I had to do some editing to brighten it up, which makes it look grainy. In person it is brighter but not gaudy. Everything would look nicer with shiny valve covers and other cleanup.

Edit: Looking at the dark picture kind of evokes memories from the movie Alien for some strange reason!

Really LOVE your engine!! Especially the top section!! How was it polished???

Thanks. I got lucky and found that intake polished, several years ago on ebay. I've since touched it up a bit with a hand held pneumatic polisher, but really all the work was done before. To do that to a stock intake, I would imagine would take a combination of table and hand held polishing, with a lot of time and patience. The compressor is a chrome Sanden unit and pulley.

By the way, I was going to document this later, but let me do so now. As part of the detailing of the engine bay, I had several parts re-plated. When I did my VOD several years ago, I had painted most of these parts. They were OK, painted, but a plated finish would be more durable, and would look ...well, not painted. So I gathered the parts, sent them to Dave at DMCMW, and for a very reasonable amount he had them redone.

They left like this...

DPI EFI non-intercooled twin turbo engine.

If you haven't already, you have to tell us what it's like to drive this!

I have before....somewhere. Maybe here, maybe on Facebook somewhere. But, the short answer is.....as awesome as you'd think it would be. The sound is like a jet engine and the power output is insane. I'll never forget the first time I drove it. It pushed me back in the seat and I gasped and said to myself that I didn't think an automatic DeLorean could move so fast. Yes, I've done this to an automatic transmission car and against popular speculation/opinion the tranny has not exploded. Not yet anyway ;-)

That LS engine bay is too clean Josh. Best zip tie some crusty k-jet hoses around the firewall.

I really like and appreciate how you're able to maintain the original intake plenum in your builds.

Time to jump on the bandwagon. I'm still jealous though of how clean Josh's LS engine bay is...
