As Vin# 5992 has just traveled on the back of the truck from DMC Florida to Fort Lauderdale Fl, it will be waiting for its que on the end of March, to be pushed into a container for the trip across the big pond, through the Gibraldar strait to land in the port Peiraus, Athens Greece some time early April.

So having a good month ahead, I will be posting images at hand on different fixes to be made, having your opinions on them and get a task portfolio ready to work on when the car gets here. Who said Greeks are not very good with organizing???:yesss:

Plus, it is more fun to have a restoration thread on which you can mentally work along with me.

So I am looking forward to your contribution in saving this old bugger and I thank you in advance for your support.

Presenting Vin 5992
Looking at the VIN Database created I see 5992 has other details than the ones I got.

Firstly, it has been in Michigan for many years and it only had one owner. See also its old fashioned Michigan license plate.

Front to back, the body shows minor dents and issues. As most nothern States vehicles, the trouble lies below.....:facepalm:

And the interior is just a charm! No cracks or tears, just the steering column cover is missing & the glove box button...:tongue2:

Finally we have an engine @ 17500 original miles, that hasn't started in years and I am leaving this as my first surprise fix. Gasoline should be all gluey and I am hoping no rats have been chewing on the cables.... :bash:

Note this will probably be the ONLY DELOREAN in Greece.
There was one impounded but the police several years back from a drug dealer, that I think was scrapped over 10 years ago. I have been looking for that VIN for years and it can not be found in any documents of the Greek authorities :(

Actually this is what I like about it. It needs the frame removed, sandblasted, repaired and then powder painted. And that is only the start of it.
It was the same procedures I did with all my previous project cars.

I truly find it boring buying a car, adding gas and driving off....:bash:

Alex, I think that is a great idea!! If we started a thread where the purpose was to post pictures of your Delorean prominently displayed in front of a "iconic" landmark, that would be really awesome. Think too if we could somehow standardize the shot... They could then all be montaged into a video; the kind where the subject remains fixed on the screen while the rest of the images change. Some of the more creative people on this forum probably know how to do this already.

Obviously our cars do differ in appearance, but far less so than any other car. If the shot were say, open doors, taken from ~3' off the ground, driver side, from the driver's 7 o'clock position or so, about 20' away..... or something comparable. Food for thought.

I have seen plenty of YouTube videos on how to get it back shining or remove a small dent. But THIS is beyond your average dent.

I am afraid knocking this even is not an option? Has anybody dealt with such a freak?

I have read this very interesting article on filling the antenna hole (http://www.pjgrady.co.uk/GenericContent.aspx?PageType=Delorean_Repairs&ShowContent=Project_11_Antennae_Hole.html).
Could I possibly cut out that section and fill it in with a dent free stainless steel replacement, by simply erasing the welding marks?
It mentioned 304 stainless steel panels along with 316 welding rods.

You would need a skilled SS welder to repair that. Not impossible, but not common either.

If you were to replace the door, it would be much cheaper to do it before it leaves the US. Shipping a door internationally from the US, safely, would be expensive.

One possibilty would be to see if Ed Uding in DMC-EU, Netherlands has a door. Would be easier to get/ship tahn one from teh US.

I own a Catering venture. 90% of all my equipment is made of Stainless steel.
Believe me, I have the best available task force to handle stainless steel.

I would like to see if this has been done before or if I will be the first to accomplish it.

I have seen ordinary fenders that were damaged "beyond repair" to be straightened out into as smooth as a baby's behind.
Tools? Hammer and fire. The guy is the original God of metal. Also known from the Greek mythology as Haephaestus.

You are right! But with the going hourly rates in my country, I could have this done for less than USD100 :wiggle: So no worries for me here.

My D is still not in from Florida. But I finally have something to hold on to. My original EVO DMC wheel.
I may not have a Delorean, but I am pretty well prepared for it, don't you think?

Another project that I like to work on along with the long restoration of my D, is a BTTF replica / stock Delorean Hybrid.
That is, create a removable props set for the car that would take about 20 minutes to take on and off.
Why? Simply because I hate to watse another good D with drillings and such and because it also looks DAMN FINE with those huge smoke throwers in the rear!
I know it can not become 100% screen accurate, but I will give my best not to make it look like a clown.

It left the Evergreen port FL on the MADRID EXPRESS on May 14th.
Then got unloaded on the Italian island of Sardinia (Port Cagliari) on May 23rd. Sat there for about 10 days and got reloaded on the Ship ROZA A to be expected at the port of Piraeus (athens) on June 10th. I am expecting a 3-4 day delay on that.

Right now is has sailed back to Valecia in Spain, on to Costellon de la Plana and finally, I hope, to Barcelona, to finish its long journey.

In the mean time I have built, by my self killing time, several BTTF props.

As I have mentioned before, I am not looking to make a replica. But I may create a Hybrid replica set. On and off!

Wait. Your car went from Sardinia to Pireaus (correct direction) to Valecia (wrong direction) and then Barcalona? Are you collecting it in Barca? Doesn't seem right. I must be missing something.

The purchase is closed! The VIN 5992, is now destined to be the only Delorean in Greece. Now it is awaiting for my connection in FL to head to Bonita springs for the pickup and payment.

I'd go with a safe bet next Monday as soon as the customs get their paperwork all done, to release it.
It is being imported as an ITEM (collectors item) and not a vehicle. I will register it as a classic vehicle and not a daily driver, so a classics car specialist has to put his "John Hancock" on the customs form.:sing:

Seeing that ship sail into opposite directions for 10 days and just mooring outside harbors due to high traffic for 2 days.. Oh boy talk about patience!!!!

Fortunately I started tracking the container after it reached the Gibraltar. Cause for the 10 day Atlantic crossing, I would be treatment ready....
Monday morning I will be at the customs to get the paperwork done and transport the D into my "Hardware shack" for the disassembly :strongman:

And for what? Nobody watches those 3 channels... But everybody paid them for aprox. $30/month.

After several (Greek) excuses I managed to enter behind the scenes of the Piraeus Port Customs warehouse.

Never seen how high those containers are stacked. You may see it in movies and pics, but driving by a 6 container stack is pretty impressive!!!!

I figured from its condition at first glance and my expertise in watching all those lousy US CSI series....

The car must have been left outside in the hands of vandals.
Broke the window and removed parts from it. Several interior parts are missing and so is the spare.
I figures somebody (with absolutely NO love for Deloreans) was stealing stuff for resale or own use.:target:

btw first rule : location is always given from the drivers seat, so the pictures show the front Right wheel tilted (is the left also?).

Could be something as simple as a really bad alignment, maybe replaced the tie-rod ends and didn't adjust properly (aka - track rod ends; not sure what they would be called in Greece). Could be ball joints though. Possibly something got bent in the various transportings it has done - tow companies are good at miraculously finding the weakest link and then attaching their winch to it.

A quick look underneath would show any frame damage. If you get a chance on the way home and you pass somewhere with a car lift, if they would let you push it on and let you take pictures of absolutely everything under there - could be invaluable in the coming months (assuming you don't have a lift at home).

Was the window broken since you bought it? It may still be there and it's just that they window regulator has failed in the down position.

Don't feel too bad, my car came without a spare too. You should be able to source one from an 80s car in your local scrapyard (or whatever they are called in Greece) just get the bolt pattern correct.

Fixing it on an image software is not an issue for me. I just wanted to keep the original on it and that is why I mentioned the missing corners. :(

Could you not just make the picked off edges straight and add new corners to it? Match the colour in a program with a close photograph? Just my idea of how to save the decal. Personally, I'd remove it, but I understand the significance of keeping it.

There are several things I can do.
To be honest... when I first saw it I was like " yup that's gota go"
But when the car arrived in Greece and saw it again, I felt like it is its birthmark. There is no other Delorean for about 5000 miles to have it stand out but It still felt like a keeper.
Having no idea what that was Ι looked on ebay to see if there is a replacement. I first thought its a sports team of some kind.
Especially when I realized its importance and rarity, I set it as target to keep.:wrenchin:

perhaps my use of "should" earlier was too emphatic. It's Alex's car and he can do what he likes with it.

As a matter of course, on new/used DDs, I remove all dealers stickers, tag plates etc. (the old "why should I advertize for them" thought). But one day I realized that if my D had an original dealer sticker, I would be kinda pleased. Possibly because the dealer would not currently be in business, but mainly because it now falls into the category of original documentation, like a window sticker, imo.

This is not your ordinary dealer sticker. If DMCFL had put on a sticker, I would have removed it.
But having the 1982 original dealer sticker on a historic car is something to work on. | PLUS I find that Native American logo on the side kinda cool:)

Would love to brag about having the original sticker on, but the torn edges are taking off its value. As the whole car will be freshly painted and will get many new parts, likewise the sticker will have to be a repro.
So I will reproduce it the best way possible. And while I am at it, if ANYONE happens to have a MAROON WAYNE NJ origin car, I am happy to send you a sticker repro out to you ;)

Btw, in the US we have a product called PB Blaster which is much more effective at releasing stuck bolts etc than WD40. I'm not sure if it is sold in Europe but you may want to check for it, or an equivalent, as it looks like you are going to need all the help you can get ;)

Yea pretty much take all the precautions you would handling strait acetone. It's strong stuff but mixed with the right oil that makes it a great penetrant as well. Don't get it on your skin, don't breath it directly, ad don't get it on any painted surfaces. I've had it leach out of my spray bottle as well (somehow forced its way out through the "shut off" nozzle) so be cautious where you store it as well.

Right! Those fishes are made by carving out the protective black coat and the eyes are the screws.

Bought my self a mini handheld camera spy. Was looking inside my engine and them valves are in bad shape! This engine must have run for several miles with a very bad fuel/air mixture

The torsion bar does normally have a slight bend to it, and it does look like your roof box has started to separate. It can be fairly easily bolted back down again which will level this bracket up better. There is a "How To" on here somewhere.

My 997 exhaust arrived today and I placed it in position for fitting testing.
Nick was right. I need to have the manifold got around the frame to connect to the exhaust.
Also on Nick's well noticed speculations, the exhaust barrels are quite large and will have to mod the rear fascia's lower part.

I tried the fitting with the system up side sown to have the bulky part on the top

Damn that crank pulley is tough to open!

I stabilized the crank with tension mounting straps with the frame!
That damn crank was pulling the frame together!!!!:bang::bang::bang::bang:

Anybody have another way of getting this done?
I can't:
Push the car (got no wheels)
Start the engine (got no battery)
I am aware of both those tricks. That damn crank disk does not have any holes to stabilize it!

You have to stop the engine from spinning. I usually use a prybar in one of the flywheel teeth. A member on here also has a little tool that bolts to the bellhousing and meshes with the teeth to stop it from moving. Soak the nut in wd-40 or something similar for a few days. I removed mine with a 3ft breaker bar with another 3 foot cheater bar (a box piece of metal I slid over) to maximise my torque (leverage). Using an impact gun would also work, assuming it has enough torque. Just for clarification the nut uses normal threads (counter clockwise loosens the nut), they are not reverse threads.

No problem Just letting you know how I did it. Mine was tight but it came off fairly quickly. If you are removing the gearbox, you might as well just pull the engine, then remove the gearbox. Much easier that way. I removed the crank pulley when the engine was on an engine stand.

Hmmm interesting. Well I wish you the best of luck! To remove the gearbox, remove the starter, line to the slave cylinder, the shift pivot and the crossgate cable. There are four bellhousing bolts, two on the side and two on the top. Also the transmission mounts, unbolt the two bolts that go into the transmission on each side. Im sure you can figure it out, just giving the overview I would have liked when I was pulling my engine!

Well please dont cut it like I did, haha. As far as I know these are the options:

You have to strip the epoxy. This can be done through a chemical dip, burn off, or sandblasting (heavy media such as steel shot). When sandblasting you need to remove sections of metal to gain access to the box sections and reweld. Most chemical dips cant touch the epoxy so proceed with caution.

If you plan on galvanizing, the surface doesn't need to be perfect. A burn off will do. For powdercoating you need to have a chemical dip or sandblasting. The surface must be all down to the clean bare metal. Another surface treatment for the full out DIYer is coating the frame with POR15. Very labor intensive. I am not a big fan of POR15 either. The PO used it on my car and it went on very drippy (thin) and turned to absolute mush when a little brake fluid touched it.

Another combination ensure total protection with factory looks. Burn off, then galvanize, then sandblast and powdercoat. This ensures all the box sections are completely covered and the factory look is maintained. Also very expensive. Burn off may be replaced with a chemical dip. The frame must be lightly sandblasted after galvanizing to allow the powdercoat to stick.

Some final things to consider. Powdercoat and sandblasting are line of sight. Cannot get into box sections. Chemical dip and galvanizing ensure 100% coverage.

And thats a quick summation of my few weeks of research and experience.

I won't find any chem dip around my area.

I am afraid I will have to go with sand blasting and cut-n-weld. My rusty frame will not avoid cutting some large chunks off it.

Galvanizing would be my favorite option, but I am not sure I will find an oven big enough. Plus galvanizing, hardens the metal and takes away its flexibility.
Powder coating also makes a hard crust that at first hit, it may peel off starting the whole mess over.

Well, I suppose I will go with what I can find. My options are limited.

For a project this big, you might want to consider an engine hoist. I don't know about over there, but in Canada, you can get one for a couple hundred bucks. Could come in handy in the future too. Or you could always sell it to someone when you're done with it.

But in our market, an engine hoist is hard to resell. I almost had a complete used garage set with car lifts and tools but it slipped through my hands.:cry:

Since the engine and transmission are still on the car, use an impact wrench to remove the nut. You have the hard part of removing the exhaust/fascia for access already tackled. Put the tranny in (1st) gear, set the parking brake, and crank away. If you dont have an impact you can usually rent large electric ones here in the states at general tool rental locations.

Spray 50% ATF/50% Acetone on the nut.

As you can see the interior is in GREAT shape as opposed to the exterior condition.

The frame's left side is also more heavily corroded. I guess it was parked outside and was loaded with every winter's salt on the road side

I believe the large plug connects to the steering column. There should be three connections to the steering column if memory serves me correctly.

As for the other plugs, they are also disconnected on 11408, so I have not a clue!

As mentioned, LAMBDA computer (part of K-Jet).
Also for LAMBDA computer.
Fuse is for Factory "style"/QAC/Dealer power antenna. That wiring is not "stock" from the factory on an '81 but is standard issue for all earlier cars installed with the original power antenna. You can put a fuse in it and see if antenna works. I dont know what its supposed to be rated, but I'd imagine a 5a should be plenty if its working right.

Alex - I think the trick to the crankshaft nut is an pneumatic impact wrench. I'd be worried about breaking off a tooth of the flywheel using a screwdriver like that. Sounds like you were able to break it loose and achieve your objective, which is the main point... but thought I'd share for future reference.

Hi Jeff.
I was aware of the risks. Thank you for the advice. This is why I tackled two consecutive teeth on the flywheel and the horizontal screwdriver one was not putting pressure on the tooth but in between teeth keeping the flywheel jammed.:cool1:

Next was the down fall of the frame! Eight screws gold the frame to the body. a few hoses and wires... and off it comes.
Honestly.... After separating those two after 30 years, I feel bad that the D is mostly raised by the body. The frame having all that weight on it burdens the two screws that are under the center console.

I have placed the frame on two carts so I can swing it round while working on it.

There I started to work on the rust... and noted the frame's weak spots. There are 6 hollow points that have holes on the top and NONE on the bottom for water draining. So after a rainy drive or powerfull wash, water gets in there and has NO EXIT. So it basically sits in there until it evaporates. That could take quite some time during the winter....

REAR FRAME.
Engine mount column.
(you'll see what I discovered cutting open the exterior cover)

Four entry points with No.1 Being wide open! The other three are tapped but may give water some minimal access over time

What happened here is, water created its own siphon. Started eating away the components to get out.

So I am hard at Rust removing work that will be patched with clean sheets of metal welded with tic weld.

Also cleared the frame of other parts.

As soon as I am done clearing the heavy rust sections it will be sand blasted.

On that last image you can clearly see by the rust marks how the water was entering that top hole slowly detaching the epoxy from the metal and creating its own space.

All that just kept moving by the years until it finally breached out on the lowest point eating away the metal and creating a gateway of exit.

Just a note, if you are planning to get zinc parts replated, DO NOT sandblast them. They look like garbage afterwards. I just unbolted all my zinc plated parts, but them in a container and gave them to the plater. They will clean and plate them, its all part of the process.

Edit: It might be a good idea to re-enforce the LCAs with a weld bead along the bent area. Mine were very bent, and when I bent them back they cracked at the bend. So I chucked them and got new ones. Expensive but shouldn't have any more problems. Also came with the ball joint and bushing already installed, so that saved time and effort as well. There are a few options for LCAs.

That is true. Youre making me sad that my shiny chassis will get dirty, haha.

Are you refering to the rotors or calipers? The rotors make good anvils, stands, or scrap metal. I wouldnt think of reusing 32 year old rotors.

For the calipers I completely disassembled mine (save all the pins on the rear, there are no replacements) and sandblasted them with a steel shot. The bore can be cleaned with brake cleaner and finished with a hone.

Yes flawless but 30 years old and a leather as hard as time makes it.

The market does not sell partial but only complete sets. So for an individual ho was one of the seats part torn, he would rather buy an older seat to match his old leather if not willing to spend $600.

So I am, actually selling the old ones getting new ones for the same money. Driver's seat already SOLD. Passenger's pending offers..

Took drive axles apart for grease change.

My D had only 17K miles on the meter and that grease had become as hard as drying clay.
ANYBODY not sure when this job was done on yours no mater how many miles on your speedo, 30 year old grease in a semi airtight compartment like that can get sufficient for lubricating.

Please schedule your change as well. It is an easy job, yet time consuming and messy. Or just have a shop do it for you.

Well, all vehicles over two years of age are (financially) impossible to bring in. They are charged with a 400% over the initial new selling value tax.

But over 30 years of vehicle age you can declare it as a collectors item so they get an old-timer license plate and registration which is ONLY allowed to drive at days when there is an old-timer get together etc. :smoke1:

Alright, several PM's are asking how am I doing.
Well actually today was day 12 on working on it.
I got my frame hope along with all parts.

I assembled the joints back together today. In the beginning it feels like one of those IQ tests that you tray to remove a ball from a cube.

But after a few tries I got the hang of it and
THESE ARE THE TWO SECRETS:

1 Place the inner wide spaces across the exterior narrow spaces.

2 keep the two interior cylinders raised with your hand from underneath and rotate the so you insert the balls for the outside one at a time.

Then add PLENTY OF GREASE!!!

Make sure to tap on the grease with every addition. It has to move downward and then do the same procedure from the lower side.

Passed Day thirteen with minimal work cleaning the frame of corroded steel sheet covers from the front section and preparing the replacement steel sheets.
Did a first pass of the antitrust primer.

BUT! As it is the THIRTEENTH DAY, photobucket is going nuts and is not working. Can't upload images. Can't even open the page.... :clown::clown::clown:

this is a very slow process cause I needed to paint the interior parts with antitrust primer. and the each part that is to be attached from the inside also.

Forgot to take a picture of the internal column I added for stability and durability (adds also about 4 Lbs to the front of the car :P) Hence the welding spots.

How thick s that new metal? I need to do the same on my front crossmember and rear, however I wish to weld in some really thick metal like 1/8" so bottoming out and jacking the car up won't leave visible damage

I measured the existing panels at 15mm
The interior reinforcement I used 20mm panels

It was a beautiful sunny day. Absolutely no wind. Plus I am covered 270 degrees with walls and at 90 degrees from a slope. :) Even got a tan below the t-shit sleeves and my neck:hippo:
