My wife and I are planning a drive north on the PCH for April 27th, and it would be great to have other interested Nor Cal owners join us. We are planning on doing this as a slow 2 day trip. This won't be as formal as some of the drives organized in the past, it will be very casual and subject to change with the mood of the group. I haven't pre-driven the route or been to any of the places listed, this is all based on internet research so I offer no guarantees of quality. I'm also open to suggestions for more/different stops along the way, since this is a slow paced drive we'll have some time.

Round Trip Route in Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=169+N+McDowell+Blvd+Petaluma,+CA+94954&daddr=Spud+Point+Crab+Company,+1860+Westshore+Rd,+ Bodega+Bay,+CA+94923+to:Goat+Rock+Beach+Jenner,+CA +95450+to:Mendo+Burgers,+Lansing+St,+Mendocino,+CA +95460+to:Nicholson+House+Inn,+Ukiah+St,+Mendocino ,+CA+to:Bowling+Ball+Beach,+Mendocino,+California+ 95468+to:Bones+Roadhouse,+Hwy+1,+Gualala,+CA+95445 +to:539+Highway+One+Bodega+Bay,+CA+94923&hl=en&ll=38.779781,-123.214417&spn=1.518018,3.348083&sll=38.642618,-122.401428&sspn=1.520933,3.348083&geocode=FRunRwIdJtmw-CnbnMvo97OFgDE1nSTo_Gq5Cg%3BFc7cSAId8kWq-CGh5YHLoAD3OylBOYoWCyiEgDGh5YHLoAD3Ow%3BFfWlSgIdhz 2p-ClzXq9edp-GgDEbQLyrIJcHhA%3BFZ7GVwIdxPue-CFrqduQslnr9CkP1ALsNE2AgDFrqduQslnr9A%3BFSfFVwIdJA Of-CG9uoRYBzw9VCkvopnVNE2AgDG9uoRYBzw9VA%3BFdceUQIdkx-h-Cn7XYO-iyKBgDHn5ru7AepFvg%3BFfqSTwIdLA-j-CF186CYLFbAMCmh3k4trDCBgDF186CYLFbAMA%3BFenHSAIdRJ Kq-Cm1rXWGYyiEgDEkKUu6fstTnw&mra=ls&t=m&z=9) (about 3 hours one way)

Yeah, nearly 2 hours to Petaluma for me, but this is the kind of drive I've been dying to do! I think it will be well worth it.

Certainly can, like I said, we are in no rush! The only thing on the above list that has a hard time table is if we opt to do the winery, they close at 5:00 p.m.

Sounds like a goal worth achieving. The winery, that is.

Thanks for planning and posting the invite. I'll see what we can do here and let you know.

We've had our D up to Mendocino and beyond a several times but not recently - great drive, great scenery.

Oh man, if Rich is in now I'm definitely wedded to it... if we can't trust his judgement on the idea, who can we?

Have you done this route before Rich? Is the road D-friendly?

Glad to see there is so much interest, I wasn't expecting that with an overnight schedule! Of course if some wanted to make it a day trip, you easily could just do Saturday with us, you'd just be driving home into the night.

Is the road D-friendly?

Didn't even think about this, it is highway 1, isn't that well maintained the entire way? I've only driven south from here. If Rich did it once already it can't be too bad right?

Yes. It's fine up that way. Same quality as what we saw on the Hwy 1 segment of the Marin run last year.
Twisties and a few long runs. All 2-lane state hwy. Yum.

Hey,

I posted on the Facebook page but thought I'd chime in on this as well. I've been up and down that road in my Big Rig..... Would love to actually enjoy it this time. Were looking into getting the inlaws to watch the little ones so we can attend. Will know soon.......:wiggle:

Awesome, Stephen. This is one step closer to my dream of getting us all down the 17-mile drive. Our cars were born to take that road.

OK David - we are confirmed! Booked a room at the MacCallum House, which is just about a block down the street from you guys at the Nicholson House. This place gives us some cash towards dinner and drinks in their restaurant, which has good reviews - so something to consider if we are looking for an evening activity :)

This is gonna be fun.

So it sounds like Rich is out and it's just me, Clint, Stephen and Dave on this one now?

Stephen stopped by today and we chatted a little about the route - what do you guys think of coming back down 128 through Healdsburg, etc on the way home instead? Stephen knows some great routes through there (he's the real road king of our group after all)

Just a thought, I really don't care what we do as long as we're getting out and on the road!

It seems like a stop in Healdsburg would give the ladies a bit of a break from us - we could turn them loose on the wine tasting rooms and such and we could do... other stuff?

Honestly I'd hit the wineries too, given the option :) Maybe just stay one step behind them so they get their break. haha

Oh sure, make me work. Sounds like a job for the wife... :) She's a road warrior herself.

Looking at the map, how about we pick up 101 south from Mendocino, then pick up 12 East in Santa Rosa? That will put us through Healdsburg, which is cute and fun, as well as Kenwood, Glen Ellen and Sonoma before putting us back on 80 via Napa for the slog home. Since Rich can't make it now, we all need to be heading that direction anyway. David could keep on 12 forever right to his door, me and Clint and Stephen will need 80 to get home.

Or, we could take 101 to 128 then 29 thru Calistoga, St. Helena and Yountville and eventually downtown Napa before picking up 12 to 80. 128 is twisty out that way but this section is MUCH more doable than if we did the Berryessa section. It gets pretty crazy up in the mountains there and I dunno that I trust myself on that course a second time. It was white knuckle the whole way.

Yes, that's what I meant. Apple Maps was saying Mendocino was way in the middle of the Jackson State Forest..... Yay apple. 1 S to 128 to 101. Do you guys want to do 12 or 37 from there? 37 is kinda ugly if you ask me. 12 gets my vote.

Alright! I think I have updated the schedule to reflect the changes discussed (mostly Sunday is impacted). Since it is only a Sacramento based crew (and me in Lodi) going, it makes sense to start closer to the Sacramento area, specifically a Fairfield parking lot we've met in before. If there is interest, we could get an earlier start, but since this is a two day drive and we have the time, I have us meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Updated Route in Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=5253+business+center+drive+fairfield+ca&daddr=Spud+Point+Crab+Company,+1860+Westshore+Rd,+ Bodega+Bay,+CA+94923+to:Goat+Rock+Beach+Jenner,+CA +95450+to:Mendo+Burgers,+Lansing+St,+Mendocino,+CA +95460+to:Nicholson+House+Inn,+Ukiah+St,+Mendocino ,+CA+to:Cloverdale,+CA+to:US-101+S&hl=en&sll=38.713446,-122.96935&sspn=1.905169,4.22699&geocode=FSETRwId7iu4-CnN8VdmQRKFgDEOez2EPMcgng%3BFc7cSAId8kWq-CGh5YHLoAD3OylBOYoWCyiEgDGh5YHLoAD3Ow%3BFfWlSgIdhz 2p-ClzXq9edp-GgDEbQLyrIJcHhA%3BFZ7GVwIdxPue-CFrqduQslnr9CkP1ALsNE2AgDFrqduQslnr9A%3BFSfFVwIdJA Of-CG9uoRYBzw9VCkvopnVNE2AgDG9uoRYBzw9VA%3BFdYfUAId-eeq-CkBA_iAZP-DgDEY_6M2h-NP3A%3BFWgqSAIdy_ev-A&oq=st+hel&mra=dme&mrsp=6&sz=9&t=m&z=9)

2. Changes per our discussion here: Drive back along 128 to 101... this is where I'm now less sure on where it makes sense to stop/eat. If there are no suggestions perhaps we figure it out on the road?

Well, that was freaking awesome. Great drive guys, one of the best I've ever done.

For the onlookers, we only had a small handful of very minor issues! I popped my fuel boot and spilled some gas by topping off at a pitstop. Lesson learned, again. David's taillight boards could do with some minor refurbishment. And me and Stephen started having odd slipping clutches towards the end of the drive (new thread posted in the general area on that topic)

Otherwise, a safe and reliable trip with no breakdowns and some amazing scenery and great food. Fancy food.

Here are some pics!

A heart-wrenching visit to the "abandoned" hoarder DeLorean. It really is a sad state of things... we all just wanted to power wash it so badly and see what we were really dealing with. It was up to its center caps in forest floor and had clearly been flooded out, the interior is full of critters. The panels all look 100% usable though, and I bet there's more potential here than we realize. No idea what the frame is like though....

I love the moment of silence for the fallen comrade!

That car still blows my mind. It looks like someone drove it off the side of the road into the forest and walked away. How it hasn't been vandalized is anyone's guess.

That car still blows my mind. It looks like someone drove it off the side of the road into the forest and walked away. How it hasn't been vandalized is anyone's guess.

Well, it could not possibly be more in the middle of nowhere, or more invisible. You REALLY have to know you're looking for it. That first shot is what you see from the road, staring right at it. If you were walking or driving by, even the most keen-eyed observer would look right past it.

Thanks for sharing those really nice pictures
So sad to see this DeLorean abandoned like this. Is it a hook at the back of the car?
I particularly like the pictures of your cars into the forest :)

Yes! It had a trailer hitch. How crazy is that? What could you possibly tow with one of these?

Maybe this car had a nice life before ending in this field?
Do you know the VIN?

Looking around at some other resources I believe it was 5517. We couldn't read the plate under all the crap but it is not the first time a concerned owner has visited the poor thing.

It would have been fun to have you along, especially since you might have had an easier time of it in your auto. There was a lot of radio chatter after about 36 hours of driving that we were all regretting our 5 speeds :)

Seeing that car was very sad. But the tears in that pic were mostly crocodilian. We were having too much fun for real unhappiness.

Looks like you guys had a good time (besides the clutch slipping / rodents / tired clutch legs! ) and excellent weather... Well maybe i'll make it to the next event!

And did any of you pick up the year of the orange registration tag on the rear license plate? Cannot quite pick it up in the photo.

Thanks much for sharing the stories and the photos, too. Excellent shots and commentary up and down the post-trip posting.

I have mostly the same photos as Jon, but from different angles. Nothing to really add to the story he told, other than it was an amazing drive. Wouldn't mind doing the drive or one like it again soon! I've also included some non-car photos (with people)!

Color me green with envy!! What a beautiful part of the world you live in, and what a fantastic scenic drive.

That's it, I'm moving to Cali.

Right now! Honey, we are selling the house, selling the cars, selling the kids, we're moving out West!!!!

Did I mention I'm jealous? I think I did.

You guys are all 100% welcome on the next trip!!! D season never actually ends here either, so that's another bonus :) We should set up a cross country group rally or something.

Yeah, the funny thing is that the first post on the Fiero thread he links to explicitly states "Northern California." Not sure how that mix up happened.

Personally I'm okay with the misinformation. Could even be intentionally on purpose to protect the car. That's what I'm hoping. Avoid theft or vandalism.

Could be. We specifically didn't mention the exact location here either, for that very reason.

I think it's funny that the story is now referred to as being seen on a Fiero forum and now on Speedmonkey, but never here. I guess because our original, better informed, discussion got washed away.

LOL, sorta. These guys are awful.

"was found abandoned in some dark woods of North California. This DMC DeLorean was found by some guys in a North Carolina forest after they heard rumors of such a car sitting and rusting somewhere around Sacramento."

2/3 of those facts are wrong. Oh well, less chance of people hunting it down.

Sacramento? Hmmmm.... they must be talking about my hot start car. Or could be Clint's car.
