Hi NCDMC!

We planned our next event last Sunday, while at lunch at Garre Winery, to be a visit to the USS HORNET museum in Alameda CA on Saturday June 8, 2013.

The museum opens at 10am and we should plan to meet there at the museum at 930am.

After the tour we will go to a local restaurant for lunch and then take a short drive over the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island for a photo op.

We never know how many of you will show up so we will not be doing a group tour. We will enter as general admission, which is $16 per person.

BUT!!! For the time being, you can still get the Groupon 2 for 1 deal.

LINK: USS Hornet Groupon 2-for-1 offer (http://www.groupon.com/deals/uss-hornet-3?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=US_DT_SEA_GGL_TXT_TTT_SM_CBP_CH1_NBR_ k*hornet%20museum_m*b_d*US-RTC-San-Francisco_g*uss-hornet-3_c*21613769536_ap*1s1_sa*20130213_ea*20130220_xa* 20130815)

There are no special events on June 8 so we should be ok to use the Groupon.

See you all then.

Wow, this sounds fun but just the thought of taking the D over the Bay bridge freaks me out!! Especially that turn off to Treasure Island :)

Is this where they keep the Nuclear Wessels? I've been searching for so long.

Thanks for that concern, Jon.

Maybe you are thinking of the eastbound Treasure Island turnoff, a tricky hard left to avoid hitting the island from the fast left lane of I-80 East from SF to Oakland. I know it well.

The westbound I-80 turnoff we'd take coming from the Oakland side is easy. A dedicated exit lane with plenty of decel length.

It can be scoped on google streetview.

We would not be going into or out of SF. (P.S., there are some wine tasting rooms on T.I.)

Folks are welcome to skip Treasure Is. and join in for just the Hornet + lunch or Hornet only.

Views from Treasure Is. are decent, as you probably know.

John,

I take 12' wide 63' long trailers into T.I. for alot of different special events all the time. so taking the "D" would be a nice change......:tongue_stick:

Bumping the invitation - this event is 1 week away. Glad to welcome Luigi aboard, as it were.

Lunch and the T.I. drive after Hornet tour are options at your choice.
South Bay / Silicon Valley participants can PM me if interested in platooning inbound to Alameda.

See first post for Mark's Groupon link.

Yesterday Dan, Luigi and Rich, along with each of their co-drivers, enjoyed sharing stories, showing the stainless and touring the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Hornet. This carrier was active from 1944-1970. As a floating museum near Oakland, it now carries 15 historic aircraft.

There was an unexpected photo shoot offered to us before we boarded. Gullwing stainless steel sports cars just have a way of making things happen sometimes.

The last photo shows the Bay Bridge and the San Francisco skyline from the Hornet's flight deck.

Lunch at Treasure Island was tasty Italian pasta dishes for four ending with chance encounter with an Acura NSX driver who also owns a stainless-roofed Maserati Bora. He got shots of 2 DeLoreans for his collection.

Thanks to Mark for making the event arrangements and then taking one for the team when a last-minute business trip called him away.

Looks like a really fun trip! How was the heat down there? Probably a much nicer place to be than Vacaville... :)

Looks like a really fun trip! How was the heat down there?....

The weather was perfect. Sunny and ~80degF with a light breeze.

Treasure Island was cooler and windier since it was about half again closer to that bank of offshore fog you can see behind San Francisco in the last photo from the Hornet's flight deck.
