Since I should be getting my DeLorean back this week, I am already starting on my projects list of things to do it in the fields of modernization and safety. I would like to install a back up camera, and possibly sensors in the rear. I also plan to install a Homelink rearview mirror, I do know, DO NOT GLUE IT ON. Any suggestions has to where to install the camera, and if anyone makes sensors I could just mount behind the fascia, and not have to drill it.

A while ago, I saw that someone installed two cameras on either side on the pontoons. They were pointed out the two back side windows (at 5 and 7 o'clock). I think the monitors were mounted inside by the A-pillar. This mimicked the side mirror views, while working as backup camera as well.

Unable to find the video or pictures.

I've seen backup cameras installed on one or two of Gradys cars. They mounted one camera in the black bezel around the license plate. I think it was hooked up to the touch screen Jvc single din head unit. It displayed a really nice live video. But nothing I'm interested in.

I was kinda thinking in the plate bezel would be the best spot, and I think I am getting the JVC KD-AX777 Head unit, which is they only nice single DIN video touch screen that doesn't pop out that I liked. Main reasons I want the camera (sensors are optional for now) is for backing out of my driveway which has a telephone pole right at the end of it, and its a pain to see at night. And for at work, if I have to back out of our front parking lot I can see the college kids walking behind me at night better with a cam. Plus I have a cam on my car I drive now. I am so glad I got it, I almost feel weird in a car with out a camera now.

Give us updates to what headunit and installtion method you go for. I'm interested as well.

I bought an Audiovox back up camera back when Circuit City was going out of business, but just finally installed it two weeks ago.

I was able to use the mounting bracket to mount it to the rear plate without drilling the Fascia, black nuts and bolts would be better.

I did drill a new hole through the fiberglass behind the left taillight to pass the wiring through into the pontoon whee the antenna is. Power and ground are pulled from the antenna, video cable goes to the thead unit, and the (typically) pink wire I extended from the stereo to the Right Rear taillight and tapped into the reverse wire - all pretty straightforward. Worked as advertised.

I then added a modification - I tapped into the power for one of the window switches and routed that through one of un-unmarked defrost switches DMCH sells for accessories, and tied that into the pink wire too. With this mod it was important that I added a diode to the end of the pink wire before it tied into the tail light circuit so that this switch would not back feed the tail light bulbs and have them pop on.

With that mod I can now activate the camera at any time without having to switch to reverse - it works well.

The field of view from the audiovox is fine - and the video quality is good (it is a CCD camera, not a lower quality cmos). Not quite as wide as the factory one on my prius, but still fine.

As far as back up sensors, check out www.autodvdgps.com They sell them.

For the mirror, consider getting one with both homelink and outside temp sensor. I live in LA where it gets pretty hot, especially sitting in traffic on a freeway - its nice knowing the outside temp versus whats going on in my cooling system. The mirror I got has compass and temp - no homelink - but the temp really is helpful.

Good luck, and watch your wire color codes carefully...

PS - for Headunits I chose a Chinese one a few years ago with a 5" or so touchscreen and a single din form factor. The screen went a little low over the headlight switch, but its better than blocking the center AC IMHO. Similar units are available online, check out http://www.lightinthebox.com/wholesale-1-Din-Car-DVD-Player_c1919?litb_from=paid_adwords_search&gclid=CJfU4emc2qkCFRpNgwodXjxYaA for similar head units. Probably not as reliable as a name brand, but outstanding value.

This is the head unit I went with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PLEHQG
and this is the back up cam http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P3PSR6

As far as mounting the cam I will either have to drill a small hole in the plate holder, or I may make a small bracket to mount between the plate and the holder using the plate screws to secure it, and hopefully only have to drill 1 hole big enough for the RCA plug. I am still trying to find back up sensors, but that may take some time.

I have not found radars that would work through the existing rear fascia. If you do the camera, are you sure you need both? Traditional parking radar units can be found at www.autodvdgps.com

It might work to get a 2" or so strip of sheet metal and have it painted satin black, drill the lower half to house the parking sensors, and the upper half to allow the lower fascia bolts to go through - then unbolt the bottom of the fascia from the support, slip in the metal strip, and bolt it up again, then install the sensors in the lower half.

Technically the bumper overhangs this location, so you may get a bounce off of it and it will mess with the range a bit.

You may need some heat shield on the back.

As to the camera, it may be ok on the back surface of the license plate lamp - either by drilling through the housing and mounting directly to it (its cheaper than the other parts you might drill) or dropping it and using the bottom as a template for a bracket that slips between the lamp assembly and the rear fascia.

Finally, you could slightly overdrill the upper or lower screw hold already in your plate and mounting the camera directly to the license plate.

Once the wire is behind the plate/rear bezel, you can route it horizontally under the lip of the rear view mirror lens, it will be virtually invisible, once your behid the lens your are int the rear fascia area without having to drill through it.

What ever you do, before you drill anything, test the camera by having a friend hold it in place while you look at it on the monitor or a TV. It would suck to get it mounted and then not be happy with the final result.

This is what I installed:

Yes, I had to drill in the rear facia, but non-owners don't notice, and I like the feature.

Yes, I am sure I would like both. I have both on my daily driver, and while I am a decent driver, I find them indispensable, better safe than sorry. I should also mention I think I am going to try and install a homelink rearview, or at the very least an auto dimming mirror and try to install a homelink transmitter in the visor. The visor and simple auto dimming mirror would be cheaper. The visor transmitters only go for around $30 on eBay, and people have installed them in cars that never had them factory with minimal fuss. Its just an idea for now, but could look great all integrated. Also, I saw that they now have onStar for any car (well, almost any) available at Best Buy. I definitely am not going with that, but anyone want to take the challenge and get onStar in their D?

How long till someone installs a full modern can-bus?

I've seen used mirrors (toyota) with homelink and auto dim for $60 shipped - the trick is to determine the wiring requirements. I'd start by searching for all possible candidates online, maybe ebay, and then going to pep boys and cracking open the haynes manuals or searching online for your top choices to see what the wiring diagrams are.

I'm on one of the vehicle teams here at UW-Madison and have worked with the CAN on our car quite a bit. Give me about half a decade and I'll be on that. ;)

A CAN-BUS set-up would be nice, but I would love to see someone try and conver our old fuse and relay blocks into one of the ISIS setups from these guys http://www.isispower.com/ And I have done some research into the wiring of the homelink mirrors, and as far as the basics go, all you need is 3 wires, +12v, +12v switched, and ground.

I think some auto dimming mirrors have an on board light sensor, while others (older?) simply dim when you turn on the headlights. In the latter case you would need to tap into your headlight switch wiring.

Presuming you could get the jump, a DeLorean might actually win a race with something like that :D

<off topic>
I've read by the way that if you use a electric pump to deliver a little castor oil into the muffler it makes a hell of a smoke screen... Single muffler with twin pipes - the car was made for it.

Cheap - shipped fast. Easy to install, and it seems to work fine.

To install I removed both tail light assemblies. I Installed metallic tape inside the rear fascia below the tail light lenses, all the way across.

I have an access hole from behind the left tail light into the antenna area of the left pontoon. I opened up the pontoon and installed a matchbox sized driver box.

Removed the Rear Trim panel and put the speaker in with the ECUs, (have not permanently mounted it yet - passed wires through into the left pontoon, plugged it into the control box.

Tapped power and ground off the left tail light.

Put the car in reverse and turned the key to run. It sensed my leg at about 24", and began beeping. At about 8" the alarm sounds constantly.

I have not driven the car yer as its down for multiple service items, but it seems like a good add. $10 and one hour. I'll install the second one on the other car in the near future.
