Hey guys!

It's that time again. UC Davis' 100th anniversary Picnic Day is only 89 days away (April 12th) We need to start getting our application in order for this year.

For those of you who don't know or remember, Picnic Day is the highlight of the NorCal calendar (at least in my mind!) - it's a fun, low stress, low speed parade where we very clearly steal the show every year. We get tons of attention and it's a great time.

Who's interested? Last year we had 5 cars. This year I'm really, really hoping we can double it and get 10 of us.

Same requirements apply as last year (you need to have current license, registration, insurance and provide copies of all the documentation, as well as have a fire extinguisher in your car and sign a statement of rules) but I will be coordinating with interested drivers for that in a couple months.

I dont know if my clutch can handle another one of those parades, Plus ive done four of them. What can we do to make it more interesting for us drivers?

I hear you there. I get anxious about my clutch every year, but I have the car to do drives like this so "well, I figured, what the hell."

As far as making it more interesting...

We could talk about doing a theme and dress up the cars

100 year anniversary is ripe with time travel possibilities of 1914 UC Davis theme
BTTF
80s
Pixar Planes/Cars - We could dress up the cars to be airplanes from the new(ish) movie, complete with (gull)wings

Costumes for drivers/passengers
Scripted routine - periodically we stop the cars, get out, and re-enact a scene from BTTF, do a cheesy short and simple dance, or some other scripted thing

That all takes time though to prepare. Depends on how badly you want it to be interesting. Would be fun with the right idea that everyone could get behind.

Oh, and I'm in for the parade.

Ha! I like these ideas. We could definitely do something fun like that.

My wife says that the staff at UCD is also suggesting that we do something like dress up as though it was the first picnic day. Given the parade's theme this year and our time-traveling roots, this could be a lot of fun. Plus, I know Clint and Brian have steampunk in their veins.

I think this is far enough away to either be all in or once again have my car in pieces. I'm shooting for all in! I can definitely help with 80s themed stuff...

LOL, nice options Brian :)

We have to do 1900's themed stuff, not 80's this year! :) So... i dunno, mutton chops and derby hats?

OK, I put in our application. Like last year, I told them to expect 10 cars, no more but possibly less. I hope we can find something to spice up the entry this year and make this the best parade yet!

So far it looks like a good day on my calendar. Hopefully I'll have my AC working by then.

And I do tons of costuming. Pick an era and I probably have a costume for it.

Hey guys -

I'm coming down to the deadline where I am going to be asking for you to do your waivers and provide your licenses/insurance/etc like every year. I have about two weeks remaining to gather up all that paperwork. So far I have solid commitments from:

Me
David Proehl
Stephen
Ken
Brian

That's 5 - can you 5 please confirm you're still in?

Anyone else out there interested? Stephen, can you hit up Charlie and Dave S? Clint? Ryan?

Jon,
Count me in. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I had to see if we were going to be around since its right before spring break. Can you email me the form?

Hey guys. I'll be pestering all of you with all the things you need to fill out very soon - i just wanted to get an idea of who to include on the blasts. Yes, as every other year I will need a photocopy of your license, registration and insurance cards as well as for you to sign the group waiver. If you have a passenger under 13 you will need to do the 'minor' waiver for them as well, that's an individual form. Same rules apply as always, which are basically show up on time, no throwing things out of the car, you must have a fire extinguisher in the car, and if you break down pull over away from the route. SThanks for replying David and Stephen! Let me know if you round up any additional drivers. Also, make sure your doors stand tall and proud and your A/C works!

Score! Glad to hear it. Plus if you wear out your clutch I think I know where there might be a new one for you :) I am open to ideas as to how we can improve our presence and spice things up a little bit though. Costumes? Decorations? Synchronized music? Fog machines?

Cool! Did you get my doc request email?

So far I have docs in hand from myself, Ryan, David and David. That's 4 total!

I had a radical idea involving some electric golf cart drivetrain, a remote control, some tires cut in half and alot of welding. But im too busy and broke to build it...

This does sound interesting! My head is racing now about what this idea could have been.

Yes! I have been on the road for literally 6 straight weeks and haven't had much chance to send this out. Basically, be at the UC Davis campus at the usual place at around 7:30 AM. I will send out a powerpoint with a map on it to that location tonight so everyone has it. You must be there before 8 AM or you won't be able to join the lineup!!

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the car. They didn't check last year but they may this year...

Part of it I'm sure is that it takes a long time to line up a couple hundred floats, but I bet the other part is that if you tell the average college student to show up at 8:00 you should be able to actually get them there by 9:30.

Crowds favorite. I saw more people pulling out cameras and phones when Ds were passing by. Big cheering whenever Jon was blasting his stereo with 80s music. And Dave's BTTF gears.
Too bad mine is still sick at home. But it was cool to see so many Ds all at once.
By the way, it was nice to meet Rich and Mrs in person.

Thanks for sharing those photos so fast Ryan! It was really our best parade yet. Thanks to everyone for making it out, especially our "distance traveled" winner, Rich!

Every year we get a car or two closer to my goal of 10. This year we had 7, and as the first timers can tell you the atmosphere is totally worth the effort. We are absolutely the stars of this show, despite all the effort all the other groups put into their entries. Let's make next year the 10 car holy grail!

Here's another late addition - the hot blonde in my car made the evening news. I'm not even hurt that they didn't show me :)
