Not a dirt cheap starting price but interesting to see if anyone bites. I've recently become curious how much other PRV equipped cars are selling for. For some reason or another I'm having a hard time believing they've seen these cars go for $8K!! :rolleyes1:

I think that Alpine has been on eBay before, actually. I can never quite decide if I like this car or not... every picture has at least one detail that makes me say "wow, that's ugly" but also a "damn, that's cool" one.

Yeah I think it has also. Wonder what the story behind it is :thinkin:

I think you hit the Alpine nail right on the head for me: it's not a gorgeous car as much as it is so Gallic strange and intriguing. A sports car but not a Porsche 911 or Corvette. Too French to ever be confused with a BMW or Audi. Its PRV can only make the DMC faithful envious...:evil3:

If I remeber right, The powertrain from our cars was the exact same one from the 505 of the 70's. The only differences was the DeLorean oil pan and the final drive in trans was reversed. If not much has changed between the late 70's and this 88 model it might be a gold mine of parts for a DeLorean owner. But in all honestly I really don't know much about them.

I'm no Peugeot authority but I know the 1988 505 GLX used the 2.8L PRV and I'm pretty sure it is also fed via K-Jet. Might be useful for someone

That 780 would still be a pretty in depth swap as far as the electrical is concerned. Not as straight forward as a 260

I really like that 264 Volvo... But. All the "performance" of a DeLorean, more weight, and less cool. Naah, not for me.

Anyone looking for an Eagle Premier motor to build... should come down my way to some U-pull it junk yards. At Joes E-Z Pull in Newringgold PA, Motors (U pull) are $124 out the door. Now, on any given day there is about a 50/50 shot you will find a premier, and about a 50/50 shot as to if there is any chance that motor is worth taking... But. If anyone wants me to, I can keep an eye out and report back.

Good looking cylinder head, W-pipe, intake manifold, timing chain cover, valve cover, oil pan, exhaust manifolds, crossover pipe, muffler and catalytic converter. Think I see a PRV water pump in the third pic. Nice taillight fixtures too, would like to have them for wall art. The only BMW part I'm reasonable sure of is the water pump in the third pic. My guess is from a M30 inline 6 but I'm going out on a limb here. Great find

This happened to me actually. I bought a 780 to pull the engine out of. Got it for $600 not running but it ran after 10 minutes of my ownership. I decided the car was way too nice and way too good of a condition to just take the engine. So, I shopped for a second 780, got a $200 "parts car" in poor shape and I got the engine, plus spare/replacement parts for my good 780.

In the end, I still have my early '87 780 parked on a slab in the back yard, and take it for rides whenever I don't want to use my truck.

V6 780's are rare, and in good condition too nice - if you appreciate cars, to destroy.

My grandparent's neighbor and friend had one of those for as long as I can remember. When she passed away the car was still in the driveway and still looking as good as the day I first remember seeing it. Sometimes I wonder what happened to that car. I was too young to drive or own it when she passed or I would have asked the family if I could buy the car. Whenever I see one on the road I remember waving to aunt Helen and that car.

The seller has it correct in that there were [early] PRV engines that suffered oil delivery issues, but incorrect as far as the "Notable" DeLorean oil delivery issues.

I believe it was the 1970's versions of PRVs that had these issues and by the time the DeLorean came out, the engine was already modified to no longer have these issues.

Correct. The 2.7L PRVs had an issue with smaller oil passages. Specifically where if you were neglectful about oil changes, said passages could clog and lubrication of the camshafts would be affected. Then you'd grind down and damage the cams. But it was not any sort of unavailable failure. If you took halfway decent care of the engine and didn't run thousands upon thousands of miles beyond your service intervals you are fine.

It's interesting that as more and more information is shared thanks to the internet rumors gradually decrease. But the misinformation about these engines persists still since people like this keep on with the rumors.

Rumors? What rumors? The aluminum-skinned DeLorean has a Ford engine that has top end lubrication issues due to the fact that all of them had their oil drained and replaced with cocaine at the factory. Get it together, Robert.

You could get the engine to fit, but you wouldn't want it. Totally different idle speed circuit, and the dreaded 2.7L heads. Smaller oil passages and more prone to eating camshafts if you don't religiously change the oil.

Besides, that's too much of a car to scrap simply for the engine.

I have the opportunity to buy a 1980 Volve Bertone from Florida for $800 and wondering what everyone thinks the PRV engine is worth?

Thanks

If I recall, I think the Alpines like this one with the PRV had a slightly different displacement and compression. I know the one they did on Wheeler Dealers a while back had 2 carbs on it. The front was a 2 barrel that ran the first 4 cylinders and the rear was a 1 barrel that ran the last 2 cylinders... or maybe I have it backwards. Seemed like a tricky setup to tune.

Neat car though and agree definitely not a donor!:thumbup2:

A 2 barrel for one part of the engine and a single barrel for the rest?!?!? TFTF= too French to function (just kidding, I love the French)

The Alpine single bbl / two bbl setup is the same system that was used on the carbed Peugeot 604s.

The single Solex 34 is the primary carb. The two bbl Solex 35 are vacuum operated secondaries. Functionally its the same concept as a Quadrajet with vacuum secondaries, the Alpine / Peugeot system just uses two carbs rather than a single unit.

I am running a Peugeot sourced system on 5052. The biggest issue I have run into has been the coolant operated choke thermostat.

Prices do seem high for an engine, I am guessing, few people have much need for. Then again vendors have crate engines listed for $9000!!

$3+K is a lot for a donor engine, and the car is actually nice shape.

If you hit eBay and type in "Eagle Premier Engine 3.0" you'll be presented with a long list of engines to choose from, first one is $185+ shipping.

Yes, you are right.

I'd like to change the title of this thread to 'Other PRVs' or something like that. The question mark is supposed to indicate a potential engine donor or possibly just a nice car that shares engines with us

I wouldn't touch that Venturi with a 10' cattle prod!

Lovely car, and yes I'd love to own one. But the thing is only 21 years old. Unless there is some sort of importation paperwork showing an exemption, AND it has proof of DOT approval for U.S. specs, that car is here illegally. That's why this vehicle was never registered!

And when you don't properly import vehicles, which given the age of this one it wasn't, the Feds will seize your car without compensation, and this happens:

Probably the seller has been flying under the radar for these past 20 years. I don't have any idea if Venturi did any kind of US certification work, doubtful since they never sold any cars here. EPA probably wouldn't be too hard to meet but the DOT crash safety requirements are nearly impossible unless you can provide them with a few cars to wreck and evaluate and pay for their work. Even Bill Gates got caught out by the DOT in 1988 when he bought and tried to import a Porsche 959 only to have it impounded by the Feds because Porsche wouldn't give them 3 or 4 959s to crash test and the DOT wasn't buying that it was a track-only car. Moral of the story, got to be patient and wait for the 25 year exemption to come into effect.

DMCVegas
08-06-2017, 09:10 PM
There are lots of ways to earn safety exemptions from crash testing. One way is for low-volume production vehicles that will not result in mass-casualties thanks to limited production. You commonly see this with convertibles. But then you also have the other safety considerations such as DOT-approved external lighting. The biggest one of all are emissions requirements. Especially in the 80's when European vehicles were still cheating on power numbers by using leaded fuels (which everyone incorrectly blamed on Fuel Injection).

If you import a vehicle which is over 25 years old that was not originally intended for the U.S. market, you can be granted an exemption and they will allow the vehicle into the United States to be titled & operated on public roads.

But this Venturi? Nope. It's been hidden this whole time and never properly imported. That makes it illegal. Even if it WAS 25 years or older, which it isn't. Even if this car survived until it's 25th birthday, there is no guarantee that it still won't be seized by the Feds due to the illegal importation. Too much of a risk for any buyer.

Sadly I am inclined to agree with you, I don't think this car was legally imported and it would be a long, expensive and possibly futile effort to register it in the USA. Pity

I like how a law says your vehicle is unsafe and illegal to poses if its less than 25 years old. But as soon as it turns 25, It's legal and safe enough to drive anywhere we care too.

I get the intent of what they are trying to do. They assume that once a car is that old most people would have forgotten about them and just wouldn't go through the trouble to bring one into the country.

This one is a true engine donor car and might be of interest to LA area forum members. Heck core K-Jet parts would be worth the asking price alone. If I was in LA I would pull the engine, sell the K-jet parts and scrap the car.

Where can I get that AC idler pulley?

dn010
11-07-2018, 12:05 PM
I've found it incredibility difficult to find AC idler pulleys for the B280 E/F engines. I was lucky when I bought a junk Volvo 780 Bertone and found one in the truck.

My guess is they are at one point removed because the non-removable bearings go bad. Every B280F I've had, had no idler and instead they used a shorter (and impossible to remove) belt. The bearing in the idler I found in the trunk was bad too - I had to drill out all the rivets holding the pulley together, separate the pulley, install a new bearing and rivet it back up.

Why couldn't Renault/DMC put the ignition distributor where this Volvo has it located?

DMCVegas

Why couldn't Renault/DMC put the ignition distributor where this Volvo has it located?

Evolution of the PRV. Started as a V8, lopped down to a V6. Designed for carburetors at the time, ignition distributor location wasn't a concern. Engine then evolved to accommodate K-Jetronic. Camshafts remain while cylinder heads are redesigned to mount injectors (why, I have no idea since it was more expensive and killed performance) with the large manifold to incorporate mechanical fuel injection. Later on with EFI and the improvements to the head it made (plus firing order), the distributor was moved to the end of the opposite camshaft. Keep in mind though that they're non-adjustable. Timing is controlled by the ECU, and this design was short lived. Later on they went DIS.

Along the way, DMC had no say in the design of the engine other than the lower crank case & oil pan which was already tooled for the A310.

Good engine otherwise, and extremely versatile for a wide variety of installations.

The engine is a PRV, not PVR. There are plenty of topics on this in the custom section of the forum, check around there. Short answer is no, they don't drop right in. The bottom ends of any of these PRV engines need to be swapped with the original engine's bottom end.

Welcome! Glad to have you abroad :)

Like Mark said no a 3.0 doesn't drop directly in. The oil pan is different and the mounts to start with. DeLoreans need a larger pulley on the water pump to effectively circulate coolant through the longer path it takes to the radiator up front. The 3.0 is an even fire engine while the DeLorean's 2.8 is odd fire so changes have to be made in ignition timing and distributor advance. Oh and the 3.0 uses electronic fuel injection not mechanical like stock. Also DMC frames have variances between automatics and manuals that need to be taken into account. As far as engine swaps go though a 3.0 or other PRV is as "drop in" as it gets i.e. no irreversible changes to the frame are necessary or major rerouting of the exhaust, fuel, and coolant lines.

Here is one owner's account of transplanting a 3.0 PRV: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?14051-3-0L-engine-swap

If you search this forum you will find threads documenting Chevy LS swaps, a VW VR6 swap and others.

DeLoreans need a larger pulley on the water pump to effectively circulate coolant through the longer path it takes to the radiator up front.
A larger pulley would underdrive the water pump, though. I've read a few 3.0 builds but I don't recall seeing pulley size addressed. Is there a build thread or resource where this is discussed?

You might be right. I remember reading about someone scoring an incredible deal on a crossover water pump (Volvo 760GLE?) except their car constantly ran on the hot side and it was deduced the pulley was not moving enough coolant quickly enough for the D's requirements. Now that you have brought it up I don't remember if the Volvo pulley was too big or too small just that it wasn't right.

I've been using a volvo pulley for the past 7 years with no heating problem. It was obvious I was going to need a spacer behind the pulley, so I had one made. The only problem is the pulley was made for 2 belts and the outermost lip will contact the A/C hose unless you move one of the A/C idler pulleys.

Is your pulley a bolt-on or press-on? What Volvo did you source it from? I'm glad this thread is clearing up some misconceptions I have had

It's a bolt on pulley for a volvo 265 2.8L V6.

The early Volvo PRVs have a different main pulley, featuring the double AC belt setup. Also weighs about twice as much as a DMC pulley! I wouldn't be surprised if there were a small variety of ratios out there. I've considered build a 3.0 and wondered if it was just one more thing I'd have to deal with :D

Very cool. I have heard the bolt on pulleys are hard to find and one of those parts definitely worth hanging onto if found. Never seen a Volvo 265 Stateside

Isn't there always "one" more thing to deal with? :)

Oh, the water pump was for a Volvo 265, I don't remember what model the volvo I pulled the pulley from.

I don't if it's heavier or not, it's stamped steel. Also I just found my pulley I got off another PRV (peugeot, or renault). It's similar to the volvo one but takes one belt, I haven't tried it yet.

"Twice" is probably not accurate, but I had one offered to me when I was looking to build a crank position setup, and it was very noticeably heavier. As soon as I picked it up I knew it wasn't going on my car :D

I have a 1993 eagle premier engine (3.0 PRV) in my storage unit in Atlanta. I could be convinced to part with it, but don't have an easy way to ship it. Pulled from pullapart and has been sitting for a while.

You're right, it was a 1989. It's been a while since I pulled it!

From memory:

the 88 and 89 have a distributor housing on the timing cover
the 90 - 92 have it capped off.

I could be wrong though.

Pretty cool to see one of these still running and driving, I can't imagine there are many left out there. All the ones I've seen in person were in salvage yards.

I got my engine from one that had 40k miles on it. It was owned by some older lady and was kept in pristine condition until a tree branch fell on top of the car totaling it out. Up until then, it was in perfect driving condition and ran like a top.

There are a couple of premiers in salvage yards I know of that have the 3.0 engine, including that one I just posted above. Here's what the engine cover looks like. Kinda dirty, but should clean up. I haven't been to that yard in a while but I can check if it's still there.

http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=59085&d=1548166186

There is also another one 5 minutes away from work that I can stop by on my way home. That yard also has like 40 pontiac fieros if anybody needs some Iron Duke parts :)
