View Full Version : General iPad Mini vs Double DIN Car Stereo

I've been following the Double DIN threads and thought that might be the first real modification I'd do to my car. Then I saw someone mention mounting an iPad Mini into the dash of a car. Now how about this for an idea? We have a perfect "Shelf" above our AC vents to mount the iPad Mini.

1. We don't have to build/manufacture a Double DIN face plate
2. Don't have to take all the dials and controls apart and move them around.
3. Don't have to reroute the AC
4. Save a lot of time
5. One of the most important things from me I don't have to modify my car.

I'm not a photoshop expert but here is what I'm thinking. All we would have to do is make some kind of mounting bracket to hold in in turns, acceleration and braking.

The only thing we need is a Single DIN Stereo.
Well, I have one other thing. I have a automatic antenna so I'd want to remove it and replace it with a standard antenna. I'm afraid that I'd wear it out turning it on and off all the time. When I go to car shows I cringe every time the judges want me to turn on the stereo.

When I want to put the car back to original
1. remove the iPad Mini
2. replace the stereo
3. replace the antenna

I use a netbook in the position you show in your picture to tune my Megasquirt. TERRIBLE. The sun glare is just too much. I can't even close the screen enough to adequately read it and block out the glare.

Over in the thread http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?9032-Switch-replacement-Python-programmer-out-there we are talking about a raspberry pi computer and touch screen interface project. My plan is to install it horizontally in the center console behind the gear shift. Far enough back that should be shielded from glare (using my cell phone as a proxy, it seems ok).

Not a fan of this. While the other might be more of a hassle and cost some money, it is a much more professional streamlined look.

I like it. Do you have the Step by Step on here somewhere?

Stupid Question. Do you have a Radio or can the iPad work as a radio?

Nice result.
What is the app's name for that interface?
I see you got a flux capacitor app as well:P All you need is the time circuit app and you're set!

Those vents look like they came from a Dodge Caliber.

I like it. Have you done a How To yet? Where is the radio, does the iPad control all the functinallity of the car stereo. What is behind the iPad, how is it mounted?

Lastly how did you reroute your AC vents and where did you get them?

Thanks! I will be doing the how-to soon with pictures and details of the install. The iPad does control ALL functions of the car stereo (source, volume, radio station, song selections, playlists, etc).

Are you going to DCS this summer? If so I would love to see one of the seminars on how you did this.

A few more modifications were performed this weekend. I added in two additional vents, one into the other driver's kneepad, and the other into the passenger kneepad. The door vents are no longer used, and the airflow is MUCH stronger and better aimed than it ever was before. And now it is easy to reach over and close the passenger side kneepad vents to double the airflow on the driver sider of the car.

Looks very good, I am impressed!! I am not crazy about making holes on the original pads for air vents. If someone would make a copy of them, affordable, instead of using the original ones or NOS, would be a great idea!
