I’m planning a drive to San Francisco and Monterey for the weekend of March 29th & 30th. It would be be a blast to have other NorCal owners join in on the fun. This is intended to be a leisurely drive, so although I have times listed as guidelines we likely won’t track to them perfectly. If there is something you’d like to see added/removed, post it here and let’s update the itinerary together. I want this to be something we can all enjoy. Also, if the date isn't good for most who are interested (majority rules), we can figure out an alternate date.

Be sure to bring your FRS radio so we can talk between cars. I have an extra I can loan out.

I understand San Fran may not be very exciting for some of you, but those of us in the Sacramento area don’t get our cars out there very often.

Day 1 - Saturday

1. 9:00 a.m. - Meet up in Concord - Depending on where everyone is coming from, we may want to meet elsewhere
2. 9:15 a.m. - Depart from Concord
3. Drive into the city from the north, across the Golden Gate bridge.

do you have a map of the proposed route through San Francisco?

My plan was to take the most direct route (https://www.google.com/maps?q=Golden+Gate+Bridge,+San+Francisco,+CA+to+Tw in+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Blvd,+San+Francisco,+CA&saddr=Golden+Gate+Bridge,+San+Francisco,+CA&daddr=Twin+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Blvd,+San+Francisco,+ CA&hl=en&sll=37.269174,-119.306607&sspn=16.254937,33.815918&geocode=FeYVQQIdWSCz-CEJVXCDlxPtzSnD____3oaFgDEJVXCDlxPtzQ%3BFWYNQAIduJ mz-Cm3cfCs4n2PgDFtbq4ByaHPsg&oq=golden+gate+bridge+to+twin&t=p&z=13), but that may not be the route with the lowest grade slope. The link I provided provides topographical information as well, if you see another route that looks better, we can go another way. I'm not very familiar with San Francisco streets and I know those with lowered suspensions will have a more difficult time than I will.

You could take Lincoln Blvd, the route through the Presideo. Right on Geary, that takes you past the Cliff House. Down the Great hwy. That takes you right along the coast. Past the Olympic club (Host of the U.S. open golf) Then to Hwy 1 south.

That certainly would be the more scenic route, it would cut out Twin Peaks though. I was hoping to hit Twin Peaks. But that route does look nice. I'm more concerned with making sure we have a great drive than hitting every stop. I'm up for what the group going wants to do.

You want to go from the meet in concord to San Raphael then down through SF?

DavidProehl
02-22-2014, 11:48 AM
That is what I mapped out, but we wouldn't have to. The other option would be crossing via the bay bridge and then driving north across the Golden Gate, and then coming back south. The difference in the routes is about 14 miles, with the bay bridge option being shorter. The only reason I chose the route I did was because we wouldn't double back, but if there is interest in driving the bay bridge that works for me. It would also mean more driving on city hills if you are cool with that.

For any concerned about bottoming out in the city, per Rich's post on the yahoo group thread (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ncdmc/conversations/topics/3331), he has taken his car throughout the city and hasn't had any issues with his Eibach setup.

My car is one of the lowest in the club if not the most and the two times ive been to SF I had no bottoming out issues either

How about Lombard street? I bet that would scare Jon though, but it would make a sweet photo of a munch of D's going down it with the doors up.

+1 on Lombard Street. I want a copy of that Photo!!!

Lombard would certainly be awesome. Like Jon I get a little paranoid about turning radius, but I doubt we'd cut it too close. Just watch the fire hydrants, as they can sneak up on you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6unTdtfTaio). We would definitely want to have someone running alongside out of the cars to take the picture.

Thus far I have confirmations for 3 cars including myself:

Rich & Kathy
Bill +1
Me

Also, per feedback, I have updated the itinerary. This is still subject to change, but is in a much more developed state.

Day 1 - Saturday

(A) 9:00 a.m. - Meet up in Concord at Walmart parking lot (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=1021+Arnold+Dr,+Martinez,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.995856,-122.108209&spn=0.005309,0.008256&sll=37.995706,-122.108885&sspn=0.007508,0.016512&t=h&gl=us&hnear=1021+Arnold+Dr,+Martinez,+California+94553&z=18&iwloc=A) right off Hwy 4.
9:15 a.m. - Depart from Concord
Drive into the city from the north, across the Golden Gate bridge.
-(B) 10:15 a.m. - Arrive at Marin Headlands (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Marin+Headlands&ll=37.833501,-122.493032&spn=0.000446,0.002064&safe=off&hnear=Marin+Headlands&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=37.833501,-122.493033&panoid=dWZb8YX3DdNNcw4eudvASw&cbp=11,141.52,,0,0.82) (this view (http://i.imgur.com/JKWezHe.jpg))
-(C) 11:00 a.m. - Moore Rd (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Fort+Point,+Marine+Drive,+San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.831921,-122.477871&spn=0.003567,0.016512&sll=37.833501,-122.493032&sspn=0.00099,0.002064&oq=fort+point&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=37.831925,-122.477866&panoid=Q_8gsa_VJmTYfuYV9BE5Bw&cbp=11,180.77,,0,2.46) (photoshoped pic from earlier visit (http://i.imgur.com/2HzPetR.jpg))
-Optional 3rd stop based on time - Fort Point (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Fort+Point,+Marine+Drive,+San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.810343,-122.476498&spn=0.003569,0.016512&sll=37.833501,-122.493032&sspn=0.00099,0.002064&oq=fort+point&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=37.810341,-122.476498&panoid=xS5FZDrRWL1OXY4pRMt5ug&cbp=11,18.45,,0,8.3) (other gull wings there (http://www.sportscardigest.com/wp-content/uploads/Gullwing-Group-Anniversary.jpg))
-We will have to pay a toll for the Bridge. You can no longer do this with cash, without FastTrack you must pay online (http://goldengate.org/tolls/) either in advance or 48 hours afterwards to avoid fines.
(D) 11:45 a.m. - Drive down Lombard (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=lombard+street+san+francisco&ll=37.802139,-122.418741&spn=0.001331,0.002064&fb=1&gl=us&hq=lombard+street&cid=1212539270291264153&t=h&z=20&iwloc=A)
-Due to there being 3 roads feeding into Lombard we will not plan on going as a group. This would require disobeying traffic laws and not represent DeLorean owners favorably for other motorists. Perhaps on another drive when we can arrive during a low traffic time of day we will do this as a group.
(E) 12:00 a.m. - Arrive at Twin Peaks (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Twin+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Boulevard,+San+Franc isco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.754803,-122.446661&spn=0.007142,0.033023&sll=37.832768,-122.478515&sspn=0.007923,0.016512&oq=twin&t=h&hnear=Twin+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Blvd,+San+Francisco,+ California+94114&z=16&layer=c&cbll=37.754803,-122.446662&panoid=FA_vYfyKCOfvoay2HYPKJQ&cbp=11,26.43,,0,7.31)

I have now booked my hotel. Price went up above $200 the original one I listed, so I'm now at the Lighthouse Lodge Cottages (http://www.lighthouselodgecottages.com/). Off street parking and very nice rooms. Got a King size bed for $155 after fees and taxes, but had to book through hotels.com in order to book a single night. The hotel's website required a 3 night booking.

If you have not booked a hotel, book now, prices seem to be climbing from what I've seen.

No special route, just what was on the linked route. I'm open to suggestions if there is a more interesting route. Here is the screenshot.

Ok that works because your linked route went across the Bay Bridge. Ive not been across the new one yet but I'd rather go over the golden gate

No special route, just what was on the linked route. I'm open to suggestions if there is a more interesting route. Here is the screenshot.

You could also go down to hwy 24 and then through the new tunnel. Then back up to Berkley and over the 580 San Rafael Bridge as planned. I'm not sure if I will be able to make this drive. Maybe just to San Fran and come home the same day.

The new Bay Bridge is really a marvel... so great to drive across, and SO much better than the old one. What a piece of junk that was. But the Golden Gate is the real icon!

Make sure you have your FasTrak paid up and ready for those tolls!

Really sad I can't make this one.

Any part of the day you can make would be awesome. The reason I didn't head through the tunnel on 24 was because I wanted to avoid doubling back as much as possible, and having to pay the toll going into the city twice (Bay Bridge & Golden Gate). If you are confirmed coming we can talk further with other confirmed drivers to see what the preference is.

You can also Pay-By-Plate (http://goldengate.org/tolls/) in advance, that is what I plan to do. I don't go into the city enough to justify a FasTrak.

This looks like a neat drive - enjoy! I saw a few pics from FB already. Obviously I couldn't go - partly because I ripped the car apart again... but that's for another thread!

Looking forward to our drive in less than a week! Below is the latest and greatest updated schedule. It is nearly identical to what was previously posted, with some minor typo corrections and and updated map link. As I've said before, this is subject to change based on what the group feels like.

And below is who has confirmed as of today:

Bill +1 - We will meet in Concord
Rich & Kathy - We will meet you at the Marin Headlands
Me & Heather

All letters in parentheses correspond to Google map locations.

[*=1](B) 10:15 a.m. - Arrive at Marin Headlands (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Marin+Headlands&ll=37.833501,-122.493032&spn=0.000446,0.002064&safe=off&hnear=Marin+Headlands&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=37.833501,-122.493033&panoid=dWZb8YX3DdNNcw4eudvASw&cbp=11,141.52,,0,0.82) (this view (http://i.imgur.com/JKWezHe.jpg))
[*=1](C) 11:00 a.m. - Moore Rd (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Fort+Point,+Marine+Drive,+San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.831921,-122.477871&spn=0.003567,0.016512&sll=37.833501,-122.493032&sspn=0.00099,0.002064&oq=fort+point&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=37.831925,-122.477866&panoid=Q_8gsa_VJmTYfuYV9BE5Bw&cbp=11,180.77,,0,2.46) (photoshoped pic from earlier visit (http://i.imgur.com/2HzPetR.jpg))
[*=1]Optional 3rd stop based on time - Fort Point (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Fort+Point,+Marine+Drive,+San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.810343,-122.476498&spn=0.003569,0.016512&sll=37.833501,-122.493032&sspn=0.00099,0.002064&oq=fort+point&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=37.810341,-122.476498&panoid=xS5FZDrRWL1OXY4pRMt5ug&cbp=11,18.45,,0,8.3) (other gull wings there (http://www.sportscardigest.com/wp-content/uploads/Gullwing-Group-Anniversary.jpg))
[*=1]We will have to pay a toll for the Bridge. You can no longer do this with cash, without FastTrack you must pay online (http://goldengate.org/tolls/) either in advance or 48 hours afterwards to avoid fines.

(D) 11:45 a.m. - Drive down Lombard (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=lombard+street+san+francisco&ll=37.802139,-122.418741&spn=0.001331,0.002064&fb=1&gl=us&hq=lombard+street&cid=1212539270291264153&t=h&z=20&iwloc=A)

Due to there being 3 roads feeding into Lombard we will not plan on going as a group. This would require disobeying traffic laws and not represent DeLorean owners favorably for other motorists. Perhaps on another drive when we can arrive during a low traffic time of day we will do this as a group.

(E) 12:00 p.m. - Arrive at Twin Peaks (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Twin+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Boulevard,+San+Franc isco,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.754803,-122.446661&spn=0.007142,0.033023&sll=37.832768,-122.478515&sspn=0.007923,0.016512&oq=twin&t=h&hnear=Twin+Peaks,+Twin+Peaks+Blvd,+San+Francisco,+ California+94114&z=16&layer=c&cbll=37.754803,-122.446662&panoid=FA_vYfyKCOfvoay2HYPKJQ&cbp=11,26.43,,0,7.31)
You’ve likely seen this famous curvey road in car commercials such as this one for BMW (http://vimeo.com/67297601) or this one for Lexus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ULcD1PjMGE)
(F) 1:15 p.m. - Late lunch in Half Moon Bay - currently thinking Miramar (http://www.miramarbeachrestaurant.com/menu)since it has a coastal view, with a backup location of Mezza Luna (http://www.mezzalunabythesea.com/lunch_menu.htmlhttp://www.mezzalunabythesea.com/lunch_menu.html)
(G) 4:45 p.m. - Arrive in Monterey via HWY 1, stop at vistas as we see fit. Park near cannery row (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cannery+Row+Parking+Lot+7/@36.6160097,-121.9009776,17z/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1sparking!3m1!1s0x0:0x99d535068b 7ef9b2) and find a place for dinner.
Stay the night in Monterey/Pacific Grove. I will be staying at Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages (http://www.lighthouselodgecottages.com/). They have off street parking and rooms look very nice. While it would be fun to stay together, feel free to stay where ever you’d like. We’ll meet up again in the morning.

Day 2 - Sunday

Wake up, eat breakfast at your hotel
(H) 9:00 a.m. Meet at someplace central to where everyone is staying, perhaps a strip mall store parking lot (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Save+Mart/@36.607569,-121.925454,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x808de6b5df8e3985:0x1722c e6c38dd9fca).
(I) 9:30 a.m. - Hiking at Point Lobos State Park (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Point+Lobos+State+Reserve&ll=36.515569,-121.934295&spn=0.015314,0.033023&fb=1&gl=us&hq=point+lobos+state+reserve&cid=18178167124864283082&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A) (parking lot $10)

If the parking lot is full we may need to skip this unless we want to park on the road, not sure I’m up for that
We will go for a brief hike
Possible photo op near the water (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Point+Lobos+State+Reserve&ll=36.515508,-121.947802&spn=0.002719,0.004128&fb=1&gl=us&hq=point+lobos+state+reserve&cid=18178167124864283082&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=36.515464,-121.947633&panoid=evwN28rD-ke0yFB12irfKw&cbp=12,245.68,,0,6.49)

(J) 1:00 p.m. - Lunch at Bruno’s Market & Deli (http://www.yelp.com/biz/brunos-market-and-deli-carmel). This is a low key sandwhich shop.
(K) 2 p.m. 17 Mile Drive (cost: ~$10)
Enter via the HWY 1 Entrance (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=17+mile+drive&ll=36.574595,-121.913438&spn=0.032086,0.066047&hnear=17+Mile+Dr,+California&gl=us&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=36.574704,-121.913508&panoid=4sz8UqnBGTtcI9UJk5ZoRQ&cbp=12,3.1,,0,16.61)
Drive Home (any suggestions on a different route back?)

Remember how I said we would need to be flexible with this drive?

As you have likely seen, the weather is not looking good in San Francisco tomorrow, there is currently a 90% chance of rain all day in SF. Monterey on the other hand should be rain free until mid-afternoon. So let's execute the plan in reverse. Those of us in the valley will still meet as planned in Concord at 9:00 a.m. (location (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=1021+Arnold+Dr,+Martinez,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.995856,-122.108209&spn=0.005309,0.008256&sll=37.995706,-122.108885&sspn=0.007508,0.016512&t=h&gl=us&hnear=1021+Arnold+Dr,+Martinez,+California+94553&z=18&iwloc=A)). We will meet up with Rich near San Jose, then continue to Monterey via 101 and do 17 mile drive before the rain hits. Depending on the rain, we could then do a Point Lobos hike or do something indoors. Sunday we would then drive up to SF and do the stops originally planned. Sunday should be partly cloudy in SF, not ideal but still far better than rain!

This way we will limit the rain for the weekend to a few hours one afternoon rather than dealing with rain all day on Saturday.

That sounds better, really sucks we can't get to enjoy the coast when it is nice and sunny.

Here's a short report with a few photos from the PCH Drive event last weekend which was shared by 4 fun couples in 4 nice D's.

Others who joined please chime in with favorite moments or shots from our journey.

We started south on Saturday from the Bay Area to Monterey, the harbor and the famous 17 Mile Drive, the end of which was in light rain:
26327 26329 26328 26342 26330

Sunday took us north on the sunny Pacific Coast Highway from Monterey to San Francisco, including a view of spouting whales at one of the stops:
26331 26332 26340

Later on 3 D's roamed through S.F. from Twin Peaks over to Lombard Street, a.k.a., The Crookedest Street in the World, then north across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands:
26333 26336 26341 26334 26335 26337 26338

Lots of great memories and zero car trouble on this very enjoyable 2-day trip.

Many thanks to David for putting this well-paced and picturesque excursion together. And thanks to all for the great company along the way!

What great photos Rich! Thanks for summarizing the trip! Below is a video with a few of my photos (and a couple of yours) sprinkled in. You'll notice the lens on the camera got a little foggy after the rain. Didn't realize that happened until after I looked at the video. :(

I edited 4.5 hours of video down to 9 minutes, however if you want to jump to specific points in the video here are some quick links:
