View Full Version : Other Exotics Spotted In The Wild

My thought with this thread is to post pics of other exotics (ie: Ferrari, Lotus, Afla Romeo, etc) that we come across ourselves; however, not necessarily newer and/or more common stuff.

There's a place next to my office that seems to have some pretty cool stuff sitting outside from time to time.

The first one is a Ferrari 365 GT I believe. The second one is a 512 BB or BBi. The third one I'm not sure about.

Here's a Ferrari 328 GTS I saw last month at Coffee & Cars in Dallas.

I've never seen one with this color combination (blue exterior & white leather interior)

Not sure how 'wild' these sightings are but here are a few from a local octoberfest meet back in 2011. They were featuring exotics so some high end cars actually showed up. I wish I would have taken more, there were some really cool cars further down the line. Up in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin it's pretty rare to see anything like this. The orange NSX was built by some famous builder in CA that did the widebody conversion. Not sure what the story was on the blue Pantera. Way down the line you can see the rear wing of a yellow F40.

This is a very rare sight! It's also Giugiaro's design, like the D. It's looks like it's sitting lower than a Delorean.

Very interesting. Thank you for the pictures.

I like this thread, but I think it's cooler if the pictures are not from car shows but actual "in the wild" photos. Even better if you can take a picture of the exotic with your DeLorean.

In a couple of weeks is the annual Exotic Car Festival down in Central FL. If any of you attend, you will see enough exotics to last you quite a while.

I think growing up in South Florida really ruined the "exotic" of exotic cars for me. I'd go grocery shopping and see lamborghini's, ferraris, etc... on a daily basis. Plus growing up near the Auto Toy Store and being near all the big ballers in Miami and Palm Beach sorta makes you numb to the effect.

I will say though it is still cool to see an OLDER exotic running around. Everyone has to have the newest and greatest... alot don't appreciate the older stuff.

That's like saying "I grew up in the playboy mansion, all those naked women, gets boring after awhile". But I know what you mean, seeing an old classic car also gets me more excited than seeing a new sports car.

Agreed, car show "spots" are Fish in a Barrel type things.

In the Wild, is stumbling across one in a parking lot, at an intersection, the older are rarer, the better.

I have the opposite affliction, growing up and living in Upstate New York means you don't see exotics often at all. So ANY interesting car here garners attention. I agree though that older exotics are much more of a thrill to see out and about on an ordinary day. I think I did snap some pics of a DeTomaso Mangusta on my old cell phone, try to see if I can find it and upload them.

Not quite the same as exotic women or sports cars, but something that hasn't lost it's wow factor for me is the CN Tower in Toronto. I've lived in and around the area for much of my life, but to this day I still look up and marvel at it when I'm there standing under it. Unique, rare and historic is a nice combination.

I recall a few years ago reading an article in Automobile magazine about this sort of exotic car spotting. While we are all car fans, this was the first time I had seen someone taking it to this level (much like trainspotters), posting his pictures on FerrariChat. It was of particular interest as the car-spotter was based here in Atlanta and he referenced places that I drove by on occasion.

http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0907_carspotter_doug_demuro/

The car-spotter in question was called Doug DeMuro, who has gone on to start his own car spotting forum (Chasing Exotics) after a successful spell on F-Chat. He segued that into an on-line blog and he has recently started writing directly for Jalopnik

http://www.chasingexotics.com/forum/forum.php

So there is money to be made in this game, perhaps 10s of dollars. And worldwide fame, obviously.

Here are a few that I saw at Caffeine & Octane in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. Like Mark D mentioned a while ago in his post, not sure how "wild" these sightings are, since you kind of expect to see some pretty cool stuff there. I can't say I ever expected to see one of these, though:

30087

It's crazy how an SLS almost fades into the background when it's sitting next to an XJ220!

No, just visiting some friends for the weekend. We wanted to catch the Dream Cars exhibit at the High, and we figured we'd time it so it lined up with C & O. Made it a car-filled weekend!

Would definitely enjoy living up there, though. It's a fairly short drive from where we are, so we try to make weekend trips up there whenever we can.

An XJ220 at Caffeine and Octane?!?!?!?!?!?! No fair! I just went the previous month for only the 3rd time in 3 years, and that would have been nice to see. Oh well, at least I got to see the one on consignment at Ferrari of Atlanta a couple years ago.

Heh, and that's how quickly a car can go from being rare and cool to a Honda Civic. (no offense to Civic owners -- it's merely a comment of how frequently you see them)

I see Leafs by the dozen round here (leafs by the branch??) but only occasionally a Tesla. Two together was a surprise. They were side by side for part of the trip, and I expected them to roll down the windows and have a chat about hypermiling or whatever, but they stoically ignored each other. Perhaps that's proof enough that they aren't exotic, come to think about it.

I think the black one was a '60', with a website price of $75k, but the red one was a P85, listed at $95k (0-60 in 4.2 secs, perfect for rush hour )

I'd agree with you completely on the Countach, Jan. Something magical and mysterious about those cars. I don't remember getting to see one up close until a couple summers ago in Calgary. This wasn't exactly in the wild as it was a car show, but amazing it certainly was.

That's a good point about what is considered exotic or rare. What does make something qualify?

A friend got talking about this one day and commented how most cars you see drive by on the highway or even walk by at car shows are just blah, blah, blah. Like they're all the same. Then every so often you see one that stands out from the blah. The DeLorean is one of those cars and I'd say the Countach is too. Many, many others are not. Thought that was an interesting way to look at it.

Now why don't you make like a Nissan and leaf? :)

It sure is! First one I saw 'in the flesh' ; a testdriver was driving it and told me it was THE car they used in Transformers 4. I have him the 'thumbs up', because it sounded magnificient when he drove by. When he came back, he opened the gullwing door and put my son in the passengerseat ... without me even asking. Great car and great color!

I have two all-time favorite cars. The one that I can and have obtained is the DeLorean. The one I cannot currently obtain is this car. This is the first time I've ever seen one in person. I came across it on my way to lunch today. It was sitting at the Italian automotive shop next to my office. I'm sure I've referenced them before on here as I get an occasional treat.

And for those who are looking at this thinking "OK, I give up, what is it?"... first of all shame on you... This is the 1984-85 Ferrari 288 GTO. Only 272 examples were produced. 30-ish of that number were originally imported for sale in the US.

They also do not appear to be tethered at the bottom. Can you imagine the confusion during high wind gusts as those things spin around?
