Alright everyone, mark your calendars! We're going to do this on Saturday May 31, since the 24th is Memorial Day weekend, and many will probably have family plans and such. Even though DPI Josh doesn't have time for us (I wish him well with his busy business), Kyle is a skilled mechanic (as well as Ben, Ron, Sean, etc…) and will be bringing some tools along. I've made a list below of work mentioned in the other thread, so if anyone has anything to add please chime in so that we'll have the necessary tools and parts.

Historically we've had an "official" starting time of 10am, but please come as early as you like and stay as long as you like. If a job takes all day, we will get it done, no pressure. Even if your car doesn't need work, or if you can't bring your DeLorean, or don't even have one, we'd love to have you be a part of the day. If anyone needs the address, please PM me.

Chris - install DPI exhaust, replace tie rod ends and steering rack boots
John (RammJaeger) - replace driver's side window motor
Ben - replace fuel pump?

Cheers everyone and I hope to see you on the 31st!

I've done all of those repair listed so far, fuel pump est time:45-1hr, tie rods and rack boots est:45-1hr, less if there is no rust, exhaust hopefully 2hrs est. depends on studs and removal of original exhaust.

any reason to bring my spring compressor for the suspension? might help if we are going to be replacing dereks trailing arm bolts.

I'm going to try to attend. I'm not sure what will still need to be done to my D by this event. I know the drive down from Chattanooga will be a good test trip for my D before I attempt to make the trek to Dayton with her.

Out of morbid curiosity, who CAN do the 24th? I'm not suggesting a date change, but just wondering who is available for the 24th? I know no matter what date is chosen there are going to be people who can not make that date, but I am curious what date would be better.

Either date has always been good for me, and that's still the case.

Does anyone have the equipment to evacuate and refil the A/C? I got my car running yesterday!

nullset
04-28-2014, 05:42 PM
What's the status of your A/C right now?

What's in it and how long has it been in there? Or is it empty? If so, how long has it been open?

davidrucker11387
04-28-2014, 07:08 PM
I Have a new compressor and while its never had the factory seal broke on it it has been on the car for a while. I have all new lines but they aren't installed and I think a new oriface tube somewhere but the evaporator and condensor are original and the system has been empty and the hoses unsealed for a very long time.

davidrucker11387
04-28-2014, 07:08 PM
And when I say the hoses were unsealed I mean the old ones on the car currently.

nullset
04-28-2014, 07:34 PM
You will need a new accumulator as well. If you don't replace the accumulator, your new lines will not last very long.

I have a vacuum pump, but I don't know if I'll be able to get to it before the tech session. It's in storage currently.....

That's what i was afraid of. Are there any cross reference's that you know of?

I don't know of any. I'd get one from a vendor you trust.

There are two styles of accumulator - "new style" and "old style". The "new style" accumulator is fairly cheap. If you got new hoses, hopefully they are new style and you can get one of the cheaper accumulators.

davidrucker11387
04-29-2014, 04:26 PM
I was surprised at how cheap the accumulator is so I'm going to order one any thing else I should get beside refrigerant? I might can get my hands on a vac pump as well but I'm probably less likely then your self lol

Just ask for a quality flush...regular amount since you are going to replace the lines...

The only thing else I can think of is the o-ring at the bottom of the condenser, assuming all of the new parts came with the ones. ...a waste bucket lol

I think what I'm gonna do is make both dates open to people. I've got nothing better to do on those Saturdays, so why not? There are a couple people who have said they can make only make the 24th, a couple who have said they can only make the 31st, and some who can make either or both. The poll shows an equal split of the 3 options right now. So the best solution is to do both days. We'll have experts Ben and Ron here on the 24th, and expert Kyle here on the 31st. So come whichever date you can, or even both if you want to.

Sure, this *may* cannibalize attendance on either date, and it'll be an interesting experiment, but I don't know what else to do at this point. I hate to leave anyone out that eagerly wants to come, but can't do one of the dates.

Hello my DMC friends, I'll plan to attend the 31st. I don't plan to have any work done on my D - unless someone has a burning desire to install a steering column bushing - didn't think so ... but I can eat Pizza and may have a few jokes to tell. If ok, I'll just hang-out and pitch-in where I can ... I can bring tools and or a floor jack / stands if needed. And, if someone is interested in driving a Stage II, I'm sure we can work something out.

If your door strut is damaged, you'll need a reinforcement plate in order to fix that. There are a few out there. I have one from PJ Grady that I'm afraid to install. From what I understand, the rear quarter panel has to be removed as part of the installation process.

I think someone else has made one since then that is supposed to be easier to install, but I don't recall who it is or whether it's worth installing....

well... if there are no major repairs lines up and time permits, I have done a few of these steering bushings and can usually get them done in a decent time frame. I'll bring my tools down to do these and if there is enough time we can replace yours.

From what I understand, the rear quarter panel has to be removed as part of the installation process.

....

You can take off the weatherstrip, take all the screws out, and lift the quarter panel away from the car enough to make the repair without taking the quarter panel all the way off the car. T-panel has to be off or at least lifted up a bit as well.

davidrucker11387

Steering bushing is something I need to consider as well but that is very low on my list lol. But would love to see our be a part of this repair for future reference.

Dust cap is fine, BRAND NEW angle drive, cables seem to be in good shape. The new angle drive gave me a working speedometer for like a week before it conked out yesterday.

I don't get it. :(

How tight are you getting the cable to the lambda box? Both sides should be finger tight only, any more and you start stripping dust caps and locking things up.

I am still planning on bringing my D if its fully ready by then other wise I'll be in my bug not a lot more room then the D but it is technically 4 seats. I got the muffler mounted and noticed that there was some kind of random clunkish sound in the engine so tomorrow, Thursday and Friday I'm going to pull the oil pan, valve and timing covers to check all the engine internals and make sure that there is nothing loose. I hope that its just a rough spot in one of the cylinder walls from where its sat the past 1.5 years. I'll find out this weekend.

So I've decided to hold off on the binnacle install. I'm hoping I exchange it as it doesn't look as nice as I had hoped. If you have followed the binnacle thread you'll know the details. The stuff I'm interested in working on on the 24th, time permitting are:

- drivers side window motor replacement
- strut replacement, I got a kit for all of them as almost all of them are leaking
- replace rivnuts on left luggage compartment strut mount. I have the rivnuts, but no tool or knowledge on how to install them
- replace headlights, sounds easy, but many of the screws are stripped and I haven't had much luck getting them out.
- replace rear view mirror
- replace A pillar trim

** A-pillar trim requires removal of the windshield and is quite a bit of work, I've replaced 3 of these and removed 5 windshields it cannot happen in a day at a tech session. **

make sure you get the 3m pad to attach the rearview mirror on to the windshield or else you will be replacing the windshield when you do your a-pillars.

Rivnuts require a special tool to install them, its kinda like a rivet gun, and I did not bring mine, nor will be able to make it the 24th.

Wow you have to take the windshield out to do the A-pillar trim? Wow. Well sometime in the not so distant future I need to have the windshield taken out to fix the leaky seals around it, so that would be a good time to do that.

The rearview mirror is from DMCH and includes the 3M pad. Why would have have to replace my windshield?

Anyone else have a special tool for Rivnuts?

Bikercmbc
05-21-2014, 03:10 PM
Yes, the glue (polyurethane) is what holds the windshield in and also keeps the water out. you actually have to support the roof when you are removing the windshield also.

the 3m pad must be used, if you use the rearview mirror glue the first big bump will crack your windshield, ask kirk in nashville, cause his PO did the glue and thats why I had to replace his windshield for him.

As far as I can tell from what people have written on here, I'm expecting 4-5+ tomorrow, and 6+ on the 31st. And of course, there are always a couple more that come who aren't active on the forum.

I have brought my big breaker bar and can replace angle drives in 15min, except I didn't bring the 24/27mm socket. Maybe Derek has some 1/2in size sockets and an impact gun.

I have done my angle drive twice, so I should have the correct size socket. Not sure about the pipe though.... I remember sliding a 5ft aluminum pipe over my wrench, but that was at the shop in Norcross.

ok, my breaker bar should take the place of that pipe. ill be able to figure some how to replace the angle drives with the resources we have.

** rivnut tools are little different than a rivet tools, same concept except the rivnut tool has a treaded end the rivnut goes on to.

Rammerjammer: ebay has rivnut tools for about $40 and free shipping, just an fyi.

Yeah, I don't think I can get a rivnut tool delivered by tomorrow though :) I was hoping to do it while were were they as I don't know anything about installing rivnuts.

I would REALLY like to know what on Earth would cause an angle drive to just completely eat itself like that. The rest of the system is totally fine - speedo cables, dust cap, all are in good shape and still working.

Guys,

It was great to hang out with you all and talk deloreans with the crew. It was also AMAZING to leave the tech session with a working drivers side windows, and all of my struts replaced and working properly. It was so awesome to finally be able to drive around with the windows down. I drove all the way home with the windows down!

So I have some people to thank:

- Ron, thanks for spending so much time getting my window motor in and my door back together. Thank your wife too, I'm sorry I didn't catch her name.
- Ben, thanks for helping me with the struts and doing the getting my door disassembled and old motor out.
- Chris, thanks for giving me a lift to get part!
- Derek, thanks for the lunch, the place to hang out and work on the cars, and all the help with tools, airing up my tires, etc.

It really was a great time!

P.S. Chris could you PM me the name of that place you said would do a good job powder coating my wheel? I'm so jealous of all you guys and your non-ratty wheels :)

Yeah there was a fair bit of head scratching as we put it back together :) And we had a couple of leftover screws... hope they weren't too important ;) We got it done in the end though, and I appreciate the help. If I could do it over again I would have been more hands on with the disassembly so I would know how it went back together. I've done a decent amount of work on cars, but I'm pretty nervous taking some of those interior panels apart since they are so expensive to replace if I break them. That's why it's cool seeing the experienced guys do it.

I just went by Harbor Freight to get a rivnut tool. It was the first place that I found that actually had one, but they were only available with attachments for standard threads, not metric (the rivnut I need to install is an M5 rivnut). I'll keep looking.

Hi guys,

Saturday the 24th was a great success! Good turnout (especially for "half" a tech session) and we got stuff done. Cars left in better shape than they arrived. The job of the day was John's driver's side window motor replacement, which Ron finished after Ben left him hanging, YET AGAIN!!! (j/k Ben) It was great to meet a couple new people too. Looking forward to next Saturday. Installing Chris' exhaust is gonna be interesting.

You need a big socket, 36mm if I remember correctly. The muffler has to come off. Belts have to come off. You will need a big breaker bar as well. If your car is a manual, leave it in 1st to help lock the engine while you break the nut loose. If you have a flywheel locker, even better. The job takes about 1.5 hours if I remember, and is in theory a straight forward job. Someone in the know refresh me on the socket size....

Does the bumper have to come off?

I do have an exhaust leak to take care of. May as well do all that at the same time, I suppose. I'll probably just pick a day and do this at the shop I have access to in Sugar Hill.

It doesn't have a lift, but it does have just about everything else.

My goal for the tech session is:
1. chris's exhaust, tie rod ends, steering rack boots

4. jaGreen's steering column bushing if plenty of time

leaving anyone out or repairs out?

Does anyone have our know someone who has a good auto trans for sale? I fear mines toast not sure yet though. I can help with the trailing arm bolts as long as there are ramps. To torque properly the weight of the car has to be on the suspension.

My DMC Friends. I'm not one to rant on these type of sites, but I will in a minute ... Because the gross lack of concern for the Customer and their crappy internal communication and broken promise, I'm not able to attend tomorrow.

who am I speaking of you ask? DMC of Houston. I will start by saying my communication with JEFF in Houston was real good. I ordered a bunch of parts about $300 - to include some internal transition parts, ordered it with 3 day delivery ... They called me advising of one BO'ed part, in the end I said that's fine, ship what you got - 10 days ago. The plan was for all parts to get to my house this week so I could get the transition back up and be ready for the tech session.

Fast forward to yesterday, I get a call, "um, do you still want us to ship the order with 3 day delivery?" ARE YOU F'ing kidding me?

They claim the guy went on vacation and they were too busy to ship it. ARE YOU F'ing kidding me?

I have purchased spring kits, stage 3 motor, stainless exhaust, Nology ignition etc. 20k+. They SUCK, and I'm pissed I'll miss you guys tomorrow.

That sucks Jeff, sorry to hear. I've seen the backordered-item-holding-up-an-entire-order situation before in several businesses. That's frustrating especially when you tell them to ship the rest. But I agree with Jai 100%, come on out anyway, even if you drive a different vehicle or don't have parts to install. There's plenty of socializing going on, while watching and learning from the masters while they do their stuff, (in between fetching tools and lending a hand of course :) ).

Saturday the 31st was awesome, yet again. This was such a blast guys, I had so much fun. Replacing Chris' exhaust was the biggest job I've ever seen done at a tech day, ever. Kyle is THE MAN -- he worked very hard to get it done and got all the old studs out without any problems, and overcame any hiccups of fitment issues/couple missing pieces, like a champ. In fact, he said he wants to replace everyone's exhaust, and is eager to do it again as soon as possible...... wait…. hold on, I may have that wrong.... hahahaha. But it was great to see a master in action. We all learned a thing or two.

It was nice to meet newcomer Doug and his son Ezra, who if I remember correctly have had their DeLorean for about 6 months now. Doug's professional car expertise showed very quickly in addition to being a really great guy.

Thanks to Ben also for bringing his classic Mustang -- very cool car and it was great to catch up as it's been way too long. And cheers to you guys who traveled so far to get here from TN and north GA, it wouldn't be the same without you. I'm glad Jai got to work on his brakes -- kudos for bringing work along even if it's sans car.

Again, HUGE thanks to everyone for coming out (sorry some were not able to make it) and I hope to see all of you next time, wherever and whenever it may be.

Yeah, I'm probably going to look at wrapping those wires and also grind down that bracket a bit. (The one right near the alternator belt.)

Car drove well on the way home. I mean I guess it felt a TINY bit more responsive but I'm chalking that up to my imagination.

How far off was your alignment?

It actually wasn't too bad at all. The wheel was only slightly too far to the left to keep the car straight and control was not an issue at all.

Of course I got an alignment right away on my way home that day and everything is good to go.

Meant to post this a while ago, but someone left this QT coffee mug at (I think) the 2nd tech session. It's probably a science experiment inside by now, but if it's yours let me know if you want me to hang on to it for you or throw it away.

I'm trying to think of who came with a pickup truck, because it seems like the only way you can transport that thing.
