Thought I would share with all of you....

VIN # unknown, Frame #10197 crashed Delorean photos/dismantling for parts...

This car was bought by Dave Bauerle in an estate auction along with two complete cars 3-4 years ago.
Dave has "hired" me to dismantle it and retain as many usable parts as possible.
This has been a great learning opportunity for me....
The frame unfortunately is shot. We do not know why the PO literally cut the car body tub in half...

Below are photos....I found a bunch of "random" loose parts in the interior....

From those photos the frame looks repairable - where the big problem area? (makes me think of those eBay ads where everything looks good)

Though I'll concede that it would take more than a little buffing out to get that LH rear q-panel fixed.

Judging by the pics, I just don't see much money to be made there, especially if he not only paid for the car, but is also paying you to strip it.

I'll take pictures of the frame damage in the next week or two (I'll be working on it on my week day(s) off).

As I said, Dave got this parts chassis with 2 other cars...and I am cheap labor when it comes to working on Deloreans...

Not to turn this into a for-sale thread, but anyone is welcome to call Dave if you see something you want...

This is kind of depressing. What happened to the D? Horrific wreck?

*puts on detective hat*

Looks like a grey interior, and the angle of the shifter looks like an auto - was the tranny still in the car Josh?

The Vin list has 10197 as an auto with a blank space against the interior but all the cars +/-30 cars are grey, so it may be safe to assume it was grey.

Last known in MI - where did Dave pick it up?

Is it? I think I see a trailing arm that broke off at it's pivot bolt, but from these pictures the frame looks decent. Maybe a few repairs and it might live again under another car.

The frame unfortunately is shot.

The Frame number is 10197, the VIN number almost always is a higher number.

It is a 5-speed; it still had the factory plastic clutch line that was hanging underneath to the slave cylinder.
The transmission is still together with the engine in the frame. The rolling chassis is mostly complete; just missing brakes and spindle on one side of the front.

I will post pics in the next week or two on the problems with the frame. Underneath it is damaged, having been dragged around...there are bent spots too from where tow hooks were attached, etc. Yes, the trailing arm pivot area is damaged....
I will be pulling the motor/transmission next and then go from there on the frame. We will put it up on jack stands to see the damage underneath...

If anyone is interested in the frame or other parts, give Dave a call.

There's not a good correlation between the frame numbers and VIN numbers. It could be higher or lower. Having said that, the number in the picture is probably not the frame number as the frame number is usually welded on a small plate on the RHS of the frame in the rear. This number is written on the crossbeam and could very well be the VIN number. I don't have a record of any frame number over 10,000.

Surprised Shannon didn't mention it, but can you get him the engine # as well for his records. It's on a plate on the engine behind the cat.

My frame number is on a welded plate on the LHS, not RHS. Can you get him that also?

+1 on this. The marker-written number on the rear crossbeam is almost always the real VIN number. I think I've seen some that are 1 off, but not more than that.

Correction - frame number is of LHS not RHS as pointed out by Dangermouse. Thanks for the correction!

The handwritten frame number on my car is 3281 while my VIN plate says 3307....

A Van

The handwritten number is usually there or thereabouts to the Vin, I think the gap is to with if the car was pulled off the line for specialist attention, it would then be reinserted and stamped a different vin than it was intended to have.

If you can't restore this, I honestly don't think you should be working on DeLoreans. It's obvious from the pictures that it just needs a little work. Two weeks tops and you should have this done.

Below are photos from today when we removed the engine, transmission, and rear suspension.

Regarding the frame condtion, the underside is pretty rusty. Where the "Y" begins at the back is the issue. The car appears to have been hit in the driver side pretty hard and you can see where the frame is pushed in on the driver side and pushed out on the passenger side just in front of where the frame splits to the back; basically the frame has shifted and would need to be straightened back.

I do not know how much it would cost to repair. Perhaps one of you would.
If anyone is interested in the frame to fix and use on their own, it is available.

Next week I will be removing the front suspension, fuel tank, and remaining pieces.
Dave will then decide if we will restore the frame or leave it as is for someone else to take over....

I forgot my camera today but the frame is completely stripped of parts.
Alot of pieces were saved.

Dave Bauerle is going to take it to a frame shop to see if it can be straightened.
If so I will be helping him restore it and we will keep it alive to help another Delorean stay on the road.
