It sounds like your fan is toast but just to be thorough, have you checked the fan relay? (the standard relay next to the fan fail) I'd see if any of the wiring to that relay is burned or damaged.

If I wasn't so gunshy about making an adapter I would try running the GM module. I've been running the Pertronix 1.5 ohm coil for two years sans the ballast resistor without any trouble so I'm good...
