I'm working on a similar project that will also use an Arduino compatible device. I'm planning on using the Particle Photon board because it has more memory, and I can re-program it via WiFi without taking it out of the car, or hooking it up to a computer.

Here is my project:

Door marker prototype
LED matrix with amber DMC lens on it. Should fit in door fine, but requires cutting the boot, as I am borrowing these lights I cannot test the fit.
Crappy video shows adruino and matrix running on its own. I made a few test animations, in the final version different animations would be triggered by events. I can run 6 of these off a one adruino.

Animations:
1-up arrows (could be used when door is opening, flipped upside down when closing. Flipped on side for turn signal)
2-All Red (red shows though on amber lens)
3-All Amber (kind of hard to see)
4-All Green (might have some problems going though non faded red lenses)
5-Flash red to amber
6-DMC logo letters
7-DMC 12 scrolling text

I like it!
Everyone is tough through a keyboard
Someone told me I should make something that is almost exactly what you are doing for the taillights. I like the concept, but as some others have pointed out the reliability and brightness of the boards makes me cautious. Something DOT approved with the same function that is mostly plug and play would appeal to me a great deal though.
