Manual Transmission Rebuilding - Step by Step Videos

I project of mine lately has been trying to develop my own one-piece manual transmission input shaft for the DeLorean. To begin testing my first prototype, I had to pull my transmission, disassemble the case, remove the input shaft, disassemble the original shaft, reassemble and install the new shaft, and reassemble the case. I did this over the course of the last few weeks, and earlier this week got the transmission installed back into my car.

Since I recently got a goPro camera, I thought it may be helpful to owners in the future if I video'ed the process. I wore the goPro on my head and talked through the complete rebuilding of the transmission from beginning to end. The videos are broken up into individual topics that are between 5-15min long. Truthfully these videos are probably really damn boring for the most part, but if they help even one person in the rebuilding of their transmission it will be worth it.

There are a lot of parts of this process that would be a lot easier if you had a press and maybe some other specialty tools, but this was just me working in my garage at my work bench. The only really specialty tool I had was a gear puller that I bought from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/14-piec...set-30305.html

Also keep in mind that the reassembly of the input shaft was of the new one-piece shaft, which for the most part is very uncommon (typically it would still be the 2 piece shaft). I did not disassemble the output shaft in the process because I had no reason to; however, if someone needs help with, or has questions about the output shaft, I can help/answer questions/take photos/make a video about it, as I've got 2 spare output shafts (one assembled, one disassembled) in a box in my garage right now.

Please note that by no means am I an expert on rebuilding these so you may be familiar with different ways to preform specific tasks. The videos simply show the ways that I performed the tasks when doing this rebuild.

This page will only allow me to embed one video per post so only the first video will be embedded, the rest will have to be links.

    Nick,
Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I watched the first video but had to put my phone down afterwards. My eyes hurt trying to keep up with the rapid camera movement. 😜

Note: I've found a wobble extension works well on the one difficult bracket bolt. Most folks don't usually have one of those in the tool box though.

I considered a wobble but settled on the universal joint. I may have to reconsider the wobble if it works well. Did you use a 3/8 wobble or a 1/4 wobble? I have a set of 3/8 wobble extensions but I don't think I have 1/4.

I actually considered modifying that bracket to make it easier to get on and off. Because my transmission is pushed forward, I found it much easier to install the transmission in the car before installing that bracket. Unfortunately that meant installing that bolt blind, under the car, in half the space normally there, using a universal. Possible, but definitely a pain.

EDIT: Also, I've considered using youtubes "stabilize" function but I know sometimes that ends up clipping the edges of the picture and I'd hate to loose something in the picture. If it turns out people think they're too shaky I'll do it.

1/4 wobble extension. I've always removed and installed the bracket with the transmission in the car.

Nice; sounds like I need to pick up a set of 1/4" wobble extensions. Thanks for the tip!

When I was pulling the transmission, the bracket made it so damn difficult because I didn't remove it first...
