I would guess it to be tricky to make a reliable neutral safety switch. I would probably try doing an LED photo transistor (block light) arrangement mounted on the transmission. Levers would block the light.

I have gotten into the habit of checking for neutral (moving shifter side to side) before starting. I don't step on the clutch when starting.

I thought about that also. I just don't know if I'd trust it over something mechanical.

Using a wifi rear view can that has an iOS app.

Will there be any issues with regards to the ipad getting too hot if the car is sitting outside under the sun?

I had this happen only once while parked in the desert in Vegas. iOS shows a temp limit that went away as soon as I turned on the AC. The stock vents are right behind the ipad with aluminum tape over them which cool it right down if this happens.
