    Cigar lighter usage...?

Has anyone found a way to charge modern electronics/cell phones using the stock cigar lighter? Or is a swap for a modern unit the only option? Thanks.

I have a small plastic sleeve that used to come with Motorola cellphones. In the 1980s. It makes the fit correct for the euro lighters, but I have not seen one of them in years.

If you really want to use it, swap it for the VW outlet (I have them in stock too).

Another thing I've done is install a completely separate outlet or triple outlet under the dash or inside the glovebox. Lots available if you go that route.

I installed the VW outlet Dave mentions. It looks stock, complete with light up green ring. The cigarette lighter that comes with it even looks very similar to the stock lighter with the exception of a cigarette icon. I painted black over the icon. That is the way to go in my opinion.

Interesting, following the links on this thread seems to indicate that the lighter itself gowesty is shipping is different now, it doesn't stick out like the DeLorean OEM one does.

Attached is a photo of what the old one looks like (I painted it to cover the icon), you may still be able to get it from Dave at DMC Midwest if he has stock, or Van Cafe has pictures with it..

    USB Charging Port

    See my write up here:

New cars don't make you go through the Cigar lighter for charging so why should we! This solution eliminates having to rely on a silly plug adapter. Now my cigar lighter is for cosmetics only. It's nice to be able to tie into the existing wiring as well. Using the defrost switch to activate the charging is nice convenience as well.

This USB charger works fine in our D's OEM lighter socket:

Works in our other cars just as well as it does in the D.

I have been wanting to replace mine for sometime. Is it difficult to remove the existing one? Can someone that has already performed this replacement explain the general procedures.

    Thanks,

I pulled the console out and removed the arm pad to get my lighter replacement insalled. Not sure if it can be done by lifting up on the metal plate. I guess it depends on how easy it is to remove the hold down ring on the lighter.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try the simpler approach, first. We'll see how that goes.
