Is there a counter-indication to switch the drive shafts (put the right on the left and vice-versa). So that they can turn the other way ? Would that be helpful in terms of wear. They have been turning one way (mostly) for thirty year.

You can swap them side-to-side. They don't seem to be a high wear item so I don't think it is necessary but it was a good idea. The main thing is to replace the boots as soon soon you see any cracking, tearing or holes. It also can't hurt to clean, replace the boots, and repack them every 30 years or so.
