Fuel Cap Replacement/Crossover

For a while I've had an issue with a fuel smell in the cabin on hot days, and since everything else is pretty solidly buttoned up now that left the very strong possibility that the deteriorated rubber on the gas cap was not sealing properly. Before I made the second order in as many weeks from Midwest, I decided to see if I could come up with anything from my local Autozone- and to my surprised apparently succeeded. The part that worked (after several trial fits with other caps- it definitely pays to befriend the staff at your local parts store!) was a Cooling System Technologies 6810 Fuel Cap. It fits nice and snug, and seems to seal a lot better. Looks a bit out of place given it's all metal vs. the black plastic top of the original- but I'll happily deal with that over sucking down fuel fumes on long trips!

I've had a persistent fuel odor problem accompanied by a constant fuel pump boot issue. But. I recently found out that the roll over valve can get jammed up and block the flow of vapors to the vacuum canister. I recently bypassed mine with a small brass fitting and all of my fuel odor issues along with my stubborn fuel pump boot issues went away. I figured if you flip the car you might have bigger issues then that stupid little valve

Well, after driving from Lexington to Dayton and back in near-to-over 90-degree weather without single whiff of gas outside of when filling the tank, I'm quite convinced that it was the filler cap that was my problem, and that this new cap has quite nicely solved it.

I tried the STANT cap today. Fortunately I drove the D to the parts store because I couldn't get it to fit and returned it immediately. The local Pep Boys here only had that one make of cap and told me the others should be identical. So my hunt continues for a suitable replacement.

I tried the Autozone 6810 cap today. I could not even get it to twist onto the filler neck. Does this look like the part you guys have used?

There is no direct cross/over cap. Some may fit but most will not. Best to go to the source and buy one from DMCH. That way you can be assured it will fit. Before buying one make sure the neck is not bent. Very common because someone leaned on the nozzle when it is in the neck and it bends the neck and the cap will no longer seal tightly. If you have the locking cap I think they are NLA.

Second thought, it does fit. I had to insert it at an angle.
