Mystery solved, it was the shocks. I drove from Crystal Lake to Iowa City tonight and it ran like a champ! Report to follow next time I have wifi and it isn't 2:30 in the morning.

That's great news! Glad to hear the first leg of your journey has been a success.
Would be interested in seeing or hearing a description of what really bad shocks look like. I can picture the ones that look all toppled over to one side, but not much else. Got me curious when the "shimmy at 60 mph" was mentioned earlier.
