Metal on metal scraping sound when I let out the clutch.

As the title says, I left a car show on Saturday and on the short drive home there was a scraping sound coming from the rear of the car. The sound would stop when I pushed the clutch in.

Anyone have an idea what it was? I don't want to move it until I have an idea what it could be.

If the noise comes and goes with clutch engagement/ disengagement most likely the throw out bearing has failed or is failing.

If the throwout bearing is the cause you would hear noises when you stepped on the clutch. About the only thing you can do is check the fluid level in the transaxle. If it is low, fill it up. If that doesn't fix it you will be removing the transaxle and probably replacing the clutch.

Putting a load on the bearing actually makes the noise less noticeable. The lack of tension on the bearing when disengaged is when the noise is the loudest.

Although we may disagree over the exact cause of the noise, it would appear we are both in agreement, the clutch is coming out unless adding oil to the transaxle fixes the noise. Another possible source could be the nut on the shaft of the transmission came loose and is eating up the cover. But that usually does not produce noise.
