"Adult Owned" Vehicles.

Over in the "Donor Cars" thread, an auction for an old Volvo Bertone came up, and reading over the listing, I came across this:

"The car has never been overheated and has been driven by my stepfather who is 53 years old, so it has not been abused at the hands of teenager."

I honestly have to ask, why in the HELL does anyone think that such a derogatory quote is somehow a selling point? Does this actually entice anyone to purchase a vehicle? Because to me, this actually sends up some serious red flags to either do some serious inspections of the vehicle, or avoid it all together.

The most reckless careless impatient worthless risk taking POS drivers on the road today are middle aged men with a disabled tag on the back.

Running close second is middle aged women that haven't a clue about vehicle physics. Sure they are all "get out of my way I can handle this curve", until the back end jumps out a few inches then they turn into a high pitched tea kettle on full tilt.

Though I haven't had an issue myself (I take public transit to work most days), my brother was rear ended last year by a texting teenager. Totalled his jeep and destroyed his neck. I'm a runner and I have been hit 3 times in 5 years by cars at stop signs because drivers feel they can check their phones as the roll up to a stop sign, except they often roll right through it. One woman had the audacity to laugh when she hit me, as if it was a joke.

In 2009 I almost lost one of my closest friends because he was texting as he drove. He was in a coma for 6 weeks and was a different person when he woke up. He's never been the same physically and mentally.

Leave your phone alone. It's one of the things I love about old cars like DeLoreans, they aren't "connected," and cues aren't constantly prompting you about incoming texts, calls or emails from a bluetooth. It's really a nice thing to be able to focus on the joy of driving.

When I was a kid or a teenager, I was always very conscious of adults putting me down for no reason other than my age. I've always been careful to not make the same mistake as I became an adult. The point that this post is probably trying to make is that the car has always been driven by an experienced driver, and not a person with little experience. I wouldn't have said, "abused at the hands of a teenager" since it implies that all teenagers abuse cars. Just something along the lines of "always driven with grace by an experienced driver" would have made the point just fine without disparaging anyone.

I've met adults that disobeyed driving laws simply because they were adults and somehow thought that made them more responsible. One of them ran into the side of their garage while driving on Ambien.

Being 26, I'm fresh on the whole "I'm more responsible than you cause I'm an adult" experience. I'm honestly slightly more reckless as I've gotten more comfortable with driving. I drive faster and take corners harder since I have a better grasp of how the car will behave.
