The desire is to use a Porsche 928 V8 as it was the motor used for the sound effects in the movie when Doc shows Marty the car in the parking lot. I'm still doing research as to which V8 it actually was and if it will work. I'm of the opinion that if you're hard headed enough, anything can work, we'll see.

I guess I should start a build thread. Rook move....
As the owner of a 1987 Porsche 928, I would say that you would have to be INSANE to use the engine in ANY car!
Parts prices are ridiculous and it is a very complicated engine brimming with cutting edge 80s technology....which makes it not easy to work on. Certainly there have to be much better modern choices?
Glad I got that off my chest!

Having owned several 928's I have to agree with John U in that you will spend more money and time chasing gophers than Carl Spankler from Caddyshack. It will take more time getting the engine running correctly vs. fitting the engine into the car.

Hell, if I were doing an engine swap, I'd install a 4.3 LV3 in there. The motor would fit better than an LS since it is a 90* v6. Alas, the sump would have to be changed, and there are no bolt-in front sumps available...

As for the transaxle, I would try a 5hp19 tiptronic. I have no idea if it would actually fit in the DeLorean chassis though.

As a more affordable and les wonky alternative to using a porsche (glorified vw) motor....may I suggest some from Ford's Escort line of cars....... You said you wanna be different....

Anyhoo...Welcome and look forward to seeing your progress

Calling the Porsche V8 a glorified VW motor shows your utter lack of knowledge on the subject. The 928 was the first "clean sheet" design that was not built using VW or Audi parts or design.

Getting the engine running before selling is a smart move.

I see the car has recent AL tags - is that where you got it? Are you in AL too? Another local-ish owner

I don't always drive cars, but when I do, I prefer DeLoreans

No-one is to stone anyone, even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say "carburetor"

Ha! Well after reading all of this, now I absolutely will figure out how to get the 928 motor to happen. I'm not being a smart ass or a douche boys but you motivate me.

The car came from Kansas City and I brought it to South Alabam. I'm stationed here with my good friend powerline84. We're both heading back to upstate New York in the next couple weeks though.

Hahahahahaha or you could just send all your extra cash to me....or burn it....or install a 928 engine!
Here is an example of the parts costs. Last year I did an intake refresh on my 928...similar to what is known around here as the valley of death. I decided to change the plastic chain guides because they were brittle and caused a blown engine in my friends car earlier. (They get old, brittle and fall apart). Four tiny 3inch long plastic guides cost me almost $400!!
The engine also has one of the longest timing belts ever on a production car with a crappy hydraulic tensioner that has to be retensioned once after being installed (after 500miles I think). Belt snaps or jumps...you are screwed! Previous mechanic tightened it too much in order to make the warning light disappear...cam gear wear. I had to replace both mine. ($500x2)
Do what you want, but there have got to be better and cheaper ways to get 300hp into a delorean. If you do decide to do it, make sure you create a build thread!!!

There are definitely "better" choices I'm sure. Easier seems to be the go to response here. I can't believe someone actually said an Escort motor....I hope it was a joke haha. We'd really like to put a Coyote in but simple math tells me to make that work, I'm gonna need fresh batteries for the sawzall.
