Shipping Company to Avoid: TFX International

Hey guys, just a warning I've received from someone I know about a shipping company called "TFX International" based out of Toronto. I've been informed they have all-around bad customer service with extremely slow pick-ups and even slower shipping.

The worst part is, I've been told if there's any damage to your car while it's in their hands, they will allegedly deny responsibility and refuse to pay for repairs.

I have not done business with this company myself so I cannot confirm or deny the quality of their service but I believe this to be trustworthy information, so this is probably something to keep in mind.

If you're going to choose a company with which to entrust a car for shipping, especially something as precious as a DeLorean, you'll probably want to steer clear of TFX. Just a heads-up.

There was another thread on that very subject on here recently.

No-one is to stone anyone, even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say "carburetor"

As for companies that come recommended, I had a great experience with Plycar. I shipped from MN to CA in 2012 for about $1 per mile. Not cheap, but very professional and kept me updated on at least a daily basis about where my car was. I'd highly recommend them. Here is a photo of the driver of the truck backing my car into the trailer.

There are a LOT of companies that call themselves "shippers" when in reality they are nothing more than brokers. They will take your job and then offer it to the lowest bidder or bidders. What that means is one guy will take it partway and hopefully connect with another and then maybe another. Each has the chance of damaging or losing your car. If low price, possible damage, and no definite schedule meets your requirements, that may be what you want. The other choice is one of the top tier carriers who will give you great service, cover damage, be on time, but cost more. In all cases you should have your own insurance too just in case. For the record Horseless Carriage, Passport and Escort are among the best IMHO. If you really want to research this look at all of the big trucks on the sidelines at all of the big auctions or fancy car shows where they have the really expensive cars. Those owners will only use the best. The better shippers will have more than a couple of their trucks there. You won't ship your car often but the damage will last a long time and so will the aggravation. You will quickly forget the great price by the time you get your damaged car!

Exactly. The guy who picked up my car in MN was also the guy that dropped it off in CA. He saw it from start to finish. That makes a big difference. I also wasn't cheap on the tip both on pickup and drop-off.

This company with the bad shipping is not cheap so no one chose it for being inexpensive. In fact they are a large company with several trucks and a terminal in Toronto. They also came recommended by one of the DMC franchises so its not like they are unknown or fly by night start up company.
Your post seems to imply that the individual that had his car damaged chose this company because he wanted to save a few bucks, and just randomly picked them from a Google search. This was not the case.

Some of the bigger companies (not all) do a lot of their own shipping but still broker and farm out jobs that are not on their heavily traveled routes or if they get too busy. Maybe they take the car to their nearest terminal and then broker it out to a local to finish the trip. All kinds of deals get made. Yes, just because a shipper is big and has a lot of trucks is no guarantee of service. Neither is reputation or referral. And even the big guys can screw up once in a while. You are further correct, a high price is also no guarantee of a good job! But a cheap price certainly is!

I own TFX. I find this rather surprising. I found this site while looking for a Delorean for my personal collection. We do ship 12,000 cars per year and have 30 trucks. We are based in Toronto and have been in business for 30 years. We are not a small, cheap or budget carrier. We are actually the largest, oldest and most widely used enclosed car transporter in Canada. Also the 'exclusive' factory Canadian distributor for dealers of Ferrari, McLaren, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, etc.

We did have an issue once (that I can remember off the top of my head) with a Delorean where the passenger door popped open during transport (we don't touch the passenger door!) and dented the car on its way to be restored. The owner told us that the door wasn't working correctly prior to transport. We denied the claim. We have no way of knowing the mechanical condition of a car and to be honest, no reasonable person would expect a transporter to take responsibility for something that wasn't caused by any of our negligence. The owner threatened to damage our reputation on the internet if we didn't pay him an undisclosed sum. We got our lawyer involved. I remember talking to the guy; it wasn't a pleasant experience for me either, I can assure you. Some customers....you don't really want coming back!

I employ 75 people. I don't think it is fair to write a post like this in an attempt to damage my business and hurt our hard earned reputation without knowing the facts. It is unfortunate that one isolated incident often ignites the "gang mentality" on these forums but when you do enough business with enough people in the general public you are bound to come across some of "those people" who use faceless screen names to bully companies online. It isn't the first time this has happened and it wont be the last. They never seem to think about the people and the families behind the companies whose lives revolve around the company they are attempting to hurt. We are the factory carrier for all the major exotic marques in Canada and also for the Barrett Jackson auctions....we must be doing something right.......look at the website and the trucks and the bulding...how do we have 30 of those if we are so terrible? Sounds odd doesn't it!

Any good, successful and large company is going to have issues occasionally. We are also going to have disagreements occasionally. We have a strict rule that we aren't responsible for a cars mechanical condition. If a truck loads an old vintage car and a trunk pops open during transport due to the latch not working, it will get dented. We see this all the time. Cars run out of gas during transport, starters stop working, etc. THESE ARE OLD CLASSIC CARS!

I hope you all enjoy your cars in good health and best to your families.

My name is Adam Horodnyk. I have always loved the Delorean cars you guys love as well. I am currently hunting for a nice one in Toronto to add to my collection.

If you need anything from www.tfxinternational.com I am happy to assist. If you want to "stay away": based on this odd review, then I wish you all the best in shipping with someone else.

And to the original poster, if you are ever in Toronto, stop by and I can show you what we actually do and you can post a retraction...because you will be impressed.

    Best.

    Adam.
