Installing a new impulse coil... new one has masking tape on it. Is this to be removed or stay on? Original coil didn't have tape but some sort of sealant on it...

I would just leave the tape on it. It looks like your new coil has less turns of wire or the wire is a smaller gauge. Have you measured the resistance of each coil?

Leave the tape on. If you look closely at the old coil you can see the windings are covered with a plastic wrap. Keeps the coils of wire from moving and rubbing. When installing be sure to check and adjust if necessary the gaps of the reluctor, all of the poles must be the same, correct gap or the engine will idle roughly. Sparingly lubricate the advance mechanism so it works smoothly. The base timing, mechanical and vacuum advance should be checked once you get the distributor back in. There is a good exploded view of the distributor in the Workshop Manual M:01:01 and the specs are on M:01:04. 600 ohms seems a bit low. The spec is 895-1275 ohms.
