If you've ever had the mode switch in your hand and seen the arcing inside as you cycle the AC on and off, you can see why the clamping diode is needed. I used a solder sleeve to attach some 16g wire which is then connected to one end of the ACS ignition diode, then grounded to the motor through an unused threaded boss. Lacing tape to secure. I'm old school..I don't used tape ever or cable ties unless I have to.
