    I buy the cheap kits and use them until they break. This current kit posted below has lasted me 5 years and it's cheap enough to replace if needed.

    An old school way to make a chaser is to just hit the sides of an old head bolt or just a 12x1.5 bolt off the shelf with a cutoff wheel flattening the threads on 2 sides.

    For chasing, absolutely; for tapping, no way. Nothing like making a tapped part only to have a tap break off while cutting new threads. At that point there's practically nothing you can do but completely start over.
