    Cigarette Lighter Holder

The metal cigarette lighter fits into a plastic piece in the console. How does one get the plastic piece out? I need to replace the little bulb that illuminates it. I don't want to break the plastic piece and I'm not seeing how it comes out.

One way to get to that bulb is to pull the console cover, the piece with the ashtray in it, and turn it over. I think the bulb is on the outside of the body of the lighter.

    Corrections anybody?

Take off the shifter surround by removing the two phillips head screws. Once removed, pry up the armrest section just enough to get your hand underneath it. The plastic holder that the bulb inserts into should be able to be pulled out from the bottom of the plastic lighter assembly ring. Replace the bulb, reinsert the plastic bulb holder (making sure the metal prong is making contact with the metal part of the lighter socket) and you should be back in business. Its a very easy job.

Yes, accessed (easier) from below with the console out.

My replacement is this one from the Vanagon website. It shows the bulb housing as the black component on the edge. As a bonus, this one fits nowadays cell phone car chargers properly.

(search on their website for "illuminated lighter assembly" if the link doesn't work).

I don't really remember how the bulb goes in or out though...

Jonathan thanks for posting that link to a replacement Cigar Lighter. I’m ordering one right now as I’m not happy with my existing one although I don’t plan on getting rid of my original DeLorean part.

    FYI
To get the plastic ring out, just pull the metal center part first. Then the plastic ring could be removed. The metal part holds some clips in the plastic ring.

But as suggested, replacing the bulb is done from the bottom.

Be very gentle with the plastic parts. They are old and brittle and won't take much abuse before breaking. Same bulb for the headlight switch and hazard switch so if they are burnt out too, get some extras.

Bummer. I have an automatic and it's a bigger pain to disassemble to shifter in order to get the console out.

    Cigarette Lighter Holder

Reviving an old thread - I replaced the cigarette light bulb with no issues, however the lighter base is a little loose...
Any advice on how to tighten it?
