How would you wire up this digital tachometer?

This is just for fun - what do you wire up this NPN sensor to?

It looks like you need to attach a magnet to a rotating shaft and then mount a sensor near it to measure RPM.

I was hoping it wasn’t that. Is there any good spot you could think of to hook it up to the motor?

The only external engine component that spins at engine RPM is the crank shaft pulley.

I think you'd be better off finding a tachometer that can actually interpret pulse counts. Then you can just hook it up to any of the white wires inside the car and it will read out. It will save you the hassle of having to try to mount a magnet and sensor pair, and run wiring from the engine bay.

    What about the flywheel

Being inside the bellhousing, I didn't didn't consider it to be external. I suppose a case could be made for that but its certainly a lot harder to access.

That said, I'd much rather put a magnet on the crank pulley than the flywheel. The imbalance would have less of an effect at the low diameter crank pulley (though you could potentially manage that by having 2 at 180° offset).

If you are looking for motor pulses you could try using the sensor hooked up the the diagnostic plug. Might have to install a magnet on the flywheel, I don't think one was ever installed.

    Well...
I cleared all of my extensions while working on something and forgot to disable it for this site when I reinstalled it.

    Thanks!
