    Are the HEIM joints really needed? why not just plain FLAT SHOULDER BOLTS

    If the surface on the chain cover and the alternator are on the same plane then you can. If not you will need a longer bolt and a spacer, you can make it work.
    You can get these at Lowes for a few dollars that will work the same as those HEIM joints in this application.
