How do i remove the distributor?

I isolated my hot start problem to the pulse coil inside the distributor. So i have a new coil i want to drop in but i also would like to set up my timing correctly as its pretty far off (about an inch south of the marking plate).

I removed the locking nut in the clocking channel but the distributor is really difficult to rotate back and forth with both hands. I didn't think it would take this much force. Then i tried to rock it back and forth while pulling up and out but i can't get it to move away at all.

    Is this normal?

There are two retaining clips holding it on that you might not have noticed. One on each side, opposite one another. They come off sort of like the clips do that are on the air filter housing.

You have to remove the intake manifold to get the distributor out. It can be tight to turn if it hasn't been moved in a long time. Typically a bad impulse coil works OK for about 20 minutes and then the motor dies and won't restart till it is cold. A Hot restart won't kill a running motor but it does prevent it from restarting till it cools.

Thanks. Yes, the manifold is out and i can hardly budge this thing.
Maybe ill try pb blaster to loosen up whatever is holding it.
Is there a spot to use a pry bar to get some leverage?

Also is that little tiny nut the only thing holding it in place?

Be really careful using force on the distributor, the body is aluminum and it will break easily. Get it to rotate before trying to remove it.

Success. This was just really stuck. After some PB blaster and twisting it back and forth it just broke free and became buttery smooth to rotate. Popped right out

Nice work. Can you post pics of the process of replacing the coil if you get a chance? Just in case I tackle this down the road. Thanks!
